Ecology, Distribution, Quantification, And Impact Of Introduced, Asian Porphyra Yezoensis F Yezoensis Ueda And Porphyra Yezoensis F Narawaensis A Miura In The Northwestern Atlantic, Jeremy C. Nettleton

Master's Theses and Capstones

Invasive species pose a threat to the balance of intertidal ecosystems. Recently, two forms of the non-native species, Porphyra yezoensis Ueda, were found at multiple sites between New York and Downcast Maine. A 2007 New England survey confirmed the presence of P. yezoensis f. yezoensis at nine sites, including two beyond its reported distribution. Porphyra yezoensis f narawaensis A. Miura was found at four sites in Long Island Sound. To assess the ecological impact of f. yezoensis and f. narawaensis on Northwest Atlantic macroalgal communities, monthly density and biomass data were gathered in 2008 from seven southern New England sites …

Molecular Targets Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) Within The Zebrafish Ovary: Insights Into Tcdd-Induced Endocrine Disruption And Reproductive Toxicity, Tisha C. King Heiden, Craig Struble, Matthew L. Rise, Martin J. Hessner, Reinhold J. Hutz, Michael J. Carvan Iii

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

TCDD is a reproductive toxicant and endocrine disruptor, yet the mechanisms by which it causes these reproductive alterations are not fully understood. In order to provide additional insight into the molecular mechanisms that underlie TCDD's reproductive toxicity, we assessed TCDD-induced transcriptional changes in the ovary as they relate to previously described impacts on serum estradiol concentrations and altered follicular development in zebrafish. In silico computational approaches were used to correlate candidate regulatory motifs with observed changes in gene expression. Our data suggest that TCDD inhibits follicle maturation via attenuated gonadotropin responsiveness and/or depressed estradiol biosynthesis, and that interference of estrogen-regulated …

Trust Establishment In Computer Networks: Theories And Applications, Yafei Yang

Open Access Dissertations

Trust, a subject extensively studied in sociology and psychology, has long been known as the driving force for collaboration in social communities. Recently, trust is recognized as a key component in new security tools to defend computer networks, such as rating systems in e-commerce networks, peer-to-peer networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks. This dissertation focuses on trust establishment framework, theoretical analysis, and trust-based security solutions in different computer networks. It provides in-depth understanding on trust establishment process and its potential vulnerabilities. It also provides effective, light-weight solutions to critical security problems in rating systems, online reputation systems, …

Delta Function For An Affine Subspace, Jeremy Becnel Jan 2008

Delta Function For An Affine Subspace, Jeremy Becnel

Faculty Publications

The Kubo–Yokoi and Donsker delta functions are well known generalized functions in infinite dimensional distribution theory. In this paper we develop the delta function for an affine subspace and show that it is a generalization of the Kubo–Yokoi and Donsker delta functions. The Wiener– Itˆo expansion of the delta function for an affine subspace is also given.

Beating The Spin-Down Limit On Gravitational Wave Emission From The Crab Pulsar, Ligo Scientific Collaboration, Nelson Christensen, Jan 2008

Beating The Spin-Down Limit On Gravitational Wave Emission From The Crab Pulsar, Ligo Scientific Collaboration, Nelson Christensen,

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We present direct upper limits on gravitational wave emission from the Crab pulsar using data from the first nine months of the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). These limits are based on two searches. In the first we assume that the gravitational wave emission follows the observed radio timing, giving an upper limit on gravitational wave emission that beats indirect limits inferred from the spin-down and braking index of the pulsar and the energetics of the nebula. In the second we allow for a small mismatch between the gravitational and radio signal frequencies and interpret …

A Simple Model For Pulse Profiles From Precessing Pulsars, With Special Application To Relativistic Binary Psr B1913+16, Timothy Clifton, Joel M. Weisberg Jan 2008

A Simple Model For Pulse Profiles From Precessing Pulsars, With Special Application To Relativistic Binary Psr B1913+16, Timothy Clifton, Joel M. Weisberg

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

We study the observable pulse profiles that can be generated from precessing pulsars. A novel coordinate system is defined to aid visualization of the observing geometry. Using this system we explore the different families of profiles that can be generated by simple, circularly symmetric beam shapes. An attempt is then made to fit our model to the observations of relativistic binary PSR B1913+16. It is found that while qualitatively similar pulse profiles can be produced, this minimal model is insufficient for an accurate match to the observational data. Consequently, we confirm that the emission beam of PSR B1913+16 must deviate …

Getting Honest About Client Perjury, Monroe H. Freedman Jan 2008

Getting Honest About Client Perjury, Monroe H. Freedman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Chief Justice Warren Burger and two other federal judges initiated disbarment proceedings against me in 1966. The charge was that, in a lecture to a group of lawyers, I had expressed opinions that "appear to be in conflict with the Canons of Professional Ethics of the American Bar Association." The offensive opinions related to the criminal defense lawyer's conflicting ethical obligations in dealing with client perjury, based on requirements in the Canons of Professional Ethics.

While the disbarment proceedings were pending, the lecture became an article: The Professional Responsibility of the Criminal Defense Lawyer: The Three Hardest Questions. After four …

Primary Neuron/Astrocyte Co-Culture On Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films: A Template For Studying Astrocyte-Mediated Oxidative Stress In Neurons, Srivatsan Kidambi, Ilsoon Lee, Christina Chan Jan 2008

Primary Neuron/Astrocyte Co-Culture On Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films: A Template For Studying Astrocyte-Mediated Oxidative Stress In Neurons, Srivatsan Kidambi, Ilsoon Lee, Christina Chan

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

We engineered patterned co-cultures of primary neurons and astrocytes on polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films without the aid of adhesive proteins/ligands to study the oxidative stress mediated by astrocytes on neuronal cells. A number of studies have explored engineering co-culture of neurons and astrocytes predominantly using cell lines rather than primary cells owing to the difficulties involved in attaching primary cells onto synthetic surfaces. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of patterned co-culture of primary neurons and astrocytes for studying neuronal metabolism. In our study, we used synthetic polymers, namely poly(diallyldimethylammoniumchloride) (PDAC) and sulfonated poly(styrene) (SPS) as the polycation …
