Profile Of Abortion Seekers In Ghana And Their Decision-Making Processes, Philomena Nyarko, Cletus Adohinzin, Saumya Ramarao, Placide Tapsoba, Ayorinde Ajayi

Reproductive Health

In 2006, a consortium of agencies, including the Population Council, came together to provide technical and financial support to the Government of Ghana in the rollout of comprehensive abortion care (CAC) services. The consortium collaborated with the government in expanding women’s access to modern family planning and CAC. The consortium’s program, Reducing Maternal Mortality and Morbidity (R3M), aims to reduce unwanted pregnancy and severe complications and deaths caused by unsafe abortion. The formative research in this report was undertaken to provide a profile of beneficiaries, their needs for information and services, their decision-making process in seeking care, and the quality …

Delinking Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting From Islam, Ibrahim Lethome Asmani, Maryam Sheikh Abdi Jan 2008

Delinking Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting From Islam, Ibrahim Lethome Asmani, Maryam Sheikh Abdi

Reproductive Health

Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) is practiced in at least 28 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, a few countries in the Middle East and Asia, and among immigrant populations from these countries in Europe, North America, and Australia. Worldwide, an estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women have undergone the practice, and at least three million girls are at risk each year. The Somali ethnic community in Kenya as well in Somalia, Djibouti, and Ethiopia, has practiced female genital cutting for centuries and the practice appears to have remained largely unchanged. The Population Council’s FRONTIERS program carried out two …

Improving Reproductive Health And Hiv Prevention Among Married Adolescents In Amhara, Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Tekle-Ab Mekbib Jan 2008

Improving Reproductive Health And Hiv Prevention Among Married Adolescents In Amhara, Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Tekle-Ab Mekbib

Reproductive Health

The objective of this project is to improve reproductive health (RH), prevent new HIV infections, and promote mutual faithfulness through addressing the HIV and reproductive risk among married adolescents, who are a large, vulnerable, and neglected category of Ethiopian youth. The Population Council partnered with Ethiopia Ministry of Education, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and the Ethiopian Muslim Development Agency to implement the project in Amhara region. The program used religious structures to spread messages about early marriage, HIV, and reproductive health. Local women leaders were trained as mentors of married adolescent girls, convening clubs through which HIV/RH information was conveyed, …

Litigating Labor Rights Across A Demilitarized Zone: The South Korean Constitutional Court As A Forum To Address Labor Violations In North Korea's Kaesong Special Economic Zone, Lavanga V. Wijekoon Jan 2008

Litigating Labor Rights Across A Demilitarized Zone: The South Korean Constitutional Court As A Forum To Address Labor Violations In North Korea's Kaesong Special Economic Zone, Lavanga V. Wijekoon

Washington International Law Journal

South Korea heralds North Korea’s Kaesong Special Economic Zone as a shining example of inter-Korean cooperation. South Korean corporations at Kaesong combine South Korean expertise with North Korean labor. However, Kaesong operations violate the North Korean workers’ labor rights. This Comment explores the legal mechanisms available in South Korea to hold violative South Korean Kaesong corporations accountable. The South Korean Constitutional Court should entertain a constitutional petition from the North Korean workers. Such petition will compel the South Korean government to recognize the North Korean workers’ rights under the South Korean Constitution and hold violative South Korean corporations at Kaesong …

The Development Of A Comprehensive Logistics And Transportation Software Technology Survey Instrument, Claudia Andreani, Rezell Cohen, Kevin Welch

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In this paper, we developed a comprehensive survey instrument that will be distributed to the leading U.S. Logistics and Transportation schools. We describe the specific procedures that were followed to build the preliminary version of our survey. We hope that this survey will help the Coggin College of Business at the University of North Florida learn about the leading software technology adoption patterns at our peer institutions.

The Relevance Of Confucian Philosophy To Modern Concepts Of Leadership And Followership, Sujeeta Dhakhwa, Stacey Enriquez Jan 2008

The Relevance Of Confucian Philosophy To Modern Concepts Of Leadership And Followership, Sujeeta Dhakhwa, Stacey Enriquez

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The purpose of this paper is to discuss Confucian philosophy and compare its relevance to modern concepts of leadership and followership. It will demonstrate that both exemplify the same ideology, though separated by centuries of history. The paper first introduces the reader to the history of Chinese government and the life of Confucius as a teacher. Then it will expand on the importance of understanding his philosophy on leadership and followership as well as its impact on China’s political and cultural development. It will then examine three Confucian teachings on leadership and three on followership. Finally, with this information, it …

Family Context Of Children And Youths Experiencing Online Interpersonal Victimization, Brian Michael Hinchee Jan 2008

Family Context Of Children And Youths Experiencing Online Interpersonal Victimization, Brian Michael Hinchee

Master's Theses and Capstones

Internet victimization of children is a recent phenomenon that is now widely studied. The various predictors of Internet victimization have received less attention. My study measures Online Interpersonal Victimization, which includes harassment and sexual solicitations. I analyze victimization using the Family Context model and Routine Activities and Lifestyles Theory to examine how relationships with parents contribute to youth victimization.

This study uses 2005 data from the Youth Internet Safety Survey (YISS2), a nationally representative sample of youth Internet users and their parents. Survey participants (N=1500) were regular Internet users between the ages of 10 and 17. It was hypothesized that …

Distribution And Feeding Behavior Of Early Life Stages Of The Northern Shrimp, Pandalus Borealis, In Relation To The Spring Phytoplankton Bloom In The Western Gulf Of Maine, Erin B. Hobbs Jan 2008

Distribution And Feeding Behavior Of Early Life Stages Of The Northern Shrimp, Pandalus Borealis, In Relation To The Spring Phytoplankton Bloom In The Western Gulf Of Maine, Erin B. Hobbs

Master's Theses and Capstones

The northern shrimp Pandalus borealis is a commercially important crustacean found in the deep waters of western Gulf of Maine. In order to develop better fisheries management practices, it is essential to understand variability in P. borealis recruitment. Analysis of samples collected along a coastal transect (during 2005 and 2006), indicate cross-shore distribution of early planktonic larval stages is consistent with observed benthic distribution of ovigerous females. Timing of larval occurrence in relation to the spring phytoplankton bloom suggests that a match/mismatch with abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton prey may be a primary determinant of recruitment success. Among the potential …

Synthesis And Properties Of Poly(Itaconic Acid), Ming Cao Jan 2008

Synthesis And Properties Of Poly(Itaconic Acid), Ming Cao

Master's Theses and Capstones

Previously, itaconic acid (IA) was known to be at best a difficult monomer to be polymerized. Here we report effective conditions for an easy polymerization of itaconic acid to high conversion and high molecular weight. tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide (tBHP) was used as an efficient initiator for solution polymerization of IA. Conversions higher than 90% can be reached in less than 1hr. Molecular weights of poly(itaconic acid) have been analyzed in GPC. The structure of PIA was studied by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR. The initiator concentration dependence and monomer concentration effect have been investigated.

Based on the polymerization process of itaconic acid, a simple …
