A Competition Module For A Small Business Management Class, Thomas C. Moore Dec 2008

A Competition Module For A Small Business Management Class, Thomas C. Moore

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In this study, the author evaluates a condition that exists among many college students, the lack of either willingness or ability to compete with one another in order to achieve objectives. The review of literature indicates that students' inability to compete was predicated by a trend, in recent decades, among educators to focus on students' self image and self esteem rather than on one's accomplishments relative to one's peers. This educational focus has yielded a preoccupation with a concern that no student should ever experience losing. However, with this trend, something was lost, students' capacity to realistically assess their skills …

Male Circumcision As An Hiv Prevention Strategy In Sub-Saharan Africa: Socio-Legal Barriers, Lawrence O. Gostin Dec 2008

Male Circumcision As An Hiv Prevention Strategy In Sub-Saharan Africa: Socio-Legal Barriers, Lawrence O. Gostin

O'Neill Institute Papers

UNAIDS and WHO recommend safe, voluntary male circumcision as an additional, important strategy for the prevention of heterosexually-acquired HIV in men in areas with high HIV prevalence and low levels of male circumcision. Comprehensive male circumcision services should include HIV testing and counseling, partner reduction, and male and female condom use. Yet, male circumcision can have deep symbolic meaning that could pose barriers to implementation. In some parts of the world, it is a traditional practice with religious or cultural significance, in others it is a common hygiene intervention, and in yet others it is unfamiliar or foreign. Consequently, the …

Working Hard For The Money: Trends In Women's Employment 1970 To 2007, Kristin Smith Dec 2008

Working Hard For The Money: Trends In Women's Employment 1970 To 2007, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

Seventy-three percent of married rural mothers with children under age 6 work for pay. As men's employment rates have dropped over the past four decades, more rural women are working to keep the lights on at home. Rural women are just as likely as their urban counterparts to work for pay, but they earn less, have fewer occupational choices, and have seen their family income decline as men's wages have not kept pace with inflation. Dr. Smith's report looks at over 30 years of data about women's employment.

Assessment Of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Food Intakes And Their Association With Socioeconomic Status And Acculturation In Midwestern Latinas, Karina R. Lora Dec 2008

Assessment Of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Food Intakes And Their Association With Socioeconomic Status And Acculturation In Midwestern Latinas, Karina R. Lora

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of a culturally appropriate food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to measure total omega-3 (n-3) fatty acid, ALA, EPA and DHA intakes of Midwestern Latinas. In addition, the study examined the association of age, socioeconomic status (SES) and acculturation with intake of n-3 fatty acids. The n-3 FFQ was developed from preliminary interviews, analyzed for content validity and pilot tested. The final instrument containing 209 items (15 culturally-specific dishes) was tested with 162 first-generation Latinas. One-on-one interviews in Spanish were conducted to validate the FFQ. In addition, women provided sociodemographic …

Integrated Approach To Airborne Laser Communication, James A. Louthain Dec 2008

Integrated Approach To Airborne Laser Communication, James A. Louthain

Theses and Dissertations

Lasers offer tremendous advantages over RF communication systems in bandwidth and security, due to their ultra-high frequency and narrow spatial beamwidth. Atmospheric turbulence causes severe received power variations and high bit error rates (BERs) in airborne laser communication. Airborne optical communication systems require special considerations in size, complexity, power, and weight. Conventional adaptive optics systems correct for the phase only and cannot correct for strong scintillation, but here the two transmission paths are separated sufficiently so that the strong scintillation is \averaged out" by incoherently summing up the two beams in the receiver. This requisite separation distance is derived for …

Moderating Effect Of Training Content Complexity On The Relationship Between Training Media And Training Outcomes, Benjamin P. Granger Dec 2008

Moderating Effect Of Training Content Complexity On The Relationship Between Training Media And Training Outcomes, Benjamin P. Granger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Web-based training (WBT) and classroom instruction (CI) constitute two training media that are commonly employed by organizations. Although the effectiveness of one medium relative to the other depends on a number of factors (e.g., Sitzmann, Kraiger, Stewart, & Wisher, 2006) this study aims to address several methodological issues common in the extant media research and investigate the moderating role of training content complexity on the relationship between media and important training outcomes. Utilizing a 2x2 experimental design, one hundred forty-two undergraduate students were randomly assigned to one of four training courses. Each training course involved a PowerPoint 2007 training tutorial …

Sub-Circuit Selection And Replacement Algorithms Modeled As Term Rewriting Systems, Eric D. Simonaire Dec 2008

Sub-Circuit Selection And Replacement Algorithms Modeled As Term Rewriting Systems, Eric D. Simonaire

Theses and Dissertations

Intent protection is a model of software obfuscation which, among other criteria, prevents an adversary from understanding the program’s function for use with contextual information. Relating this framework for obfuscation to malware detection, if a malware detector can perfectly normalize a program P and any obfuscation (variant) of the program O(P), the program is not intent protected. The problem of intent protection on programs can also be modeled as intent protection on combinational logic circuits. If a malware detector can perfectly normalize a circuit C and any obfuscation (variant) O(C) of the circuit, the circuit is not intent protected. In …

Allocating Business Profits For Tax Purposes: A Proposal To Adopt A Formulary Profit Split, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Kimberly A. Clausing, Michael C. Durst

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

The current system of taxing the income of multinational firms in the United States is flawed across multiple dimensions. The system provides an artificial tax incentive to earn income in low-tax countries, rewards aggressive tax planning, and is not compatible with any common metrics of efficiency. The U.S. system is also notoriously complex; observers are nearly unanimous in lamenting the heavy compliance burdens and the impracticality of coherent enforcement. Further, despite a corporate tax rate one standard deviation above that of other OECD countries, the U.S. corporate tax system raises relatively little revenue, due in part to the shifting of …

Research Results From A Few Alternate Methods Of Interior Duct Systems In Factory Built Housing Located In The Hot Humid Climate, Florida Solar Energy Center, Neil Moyer

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Building America Industrialized Housing Partnership (BAIHP) has collaborated with two of its industry partners to work on a portion of the project that relates to the construction and evaluation of prototype interior duct systems. In 2006, work began on a duct system design that would locate the entire length of duct work within the air and thermal barriers of the envelope. One of these designs incorporated a high-side supply register that connects to the conventional floor duct. The other design utilized a single soffit located within the conditioned space at the marriage line. The …

A Multi-Level Parallel Simulation Approach To Electron Transport In Nano-Scale Transistors, Mathieu Luisier Purdue University - Main Campus, Gerhard Klimeck Dec 2008

A Multi-Level Parallel Simulation Approach To Electron Transport In Nano-Scale Transistors, Mathieu Luisier Purdue University - Main Campus, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Physics-based simulation of electron transport in nanoelectronic devices requires the solution of thousands of highly complex equations to obtain the output characteristics of one single input voltage. The only way to obtain a complete set of bias points within a reasonable amount of time is the recourse to supercomputers offering several hundreds to thousands of cores. To prot from the rapidly increasing availability of such machines we have developed a state-of-the-art quantum mechanical transport simulator dedicated to nanodevices and working with four levels of parallelism. Using these four levels we demonstrate that an almost ideal scaling of the walltime up …
