Foundational Data Repository For Numeric Engine Validation, Jason Michael Hollingsworth Nov 2008

Foundational Data Repository For Numeric Engine Validation, Jason Michael Hollingsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Many different numeric models have been created to address a variety of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering applications. Each utilizes formulations and numeric methods to represent processes such as contaminant transport, coastal circulation, and watershed runoff. Although one process may be adequately represented by a model, this does not guarantee that another process will be represented even if that process is similar. For example, a model that computes subcritical flow does not necessarily compute supercritical flow. Selecting an appropriate numeric model for a situation is a prerequisite to obtaining accurate results. Current policies and resources do not provide adequate guidance in …

Early Maladaptive Schemas, Attachment, Negative Affect And Relationship Satisfaction, Nicole Mcdermott Nov 2008

Early Maladaptive Schemas, Attachment, Negative Affect And Relationship Satisfaction, Nicole Mcdermott

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines early maladaptive schemas (EMSs), attachment styles, depression and anxiety, and relationship satisfaction. A sample of 47 (61.7% females, 38.3% males) college students who were in a current relationship completed standardized measures for each study variable. As predicted, depression and EMSs were related to decreased relationship satisfaction. Unexpectedly, attachment styles were under-represented and therefore could not be examined in the study. Contrary to hypotheses, anxiety and relationship satisfaction were not significantly related to one another.

The Experiences Of First Year Elementary Teachers, Rebecca Anhorn

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study utilized qualitative research methods to explore the experiences of first year elementary teachers. In each of the last three months of their first year of teaching, the participants attended focus group interview sessions led by the researcher; they communicated information regarding their thoughts on their first year of teaching via electronic bulletin board postings and written surveys. They described the value they perceived of their principals, veteran teachers, and their teacher education programs in their preparation for the first year of their teaching career. The study found that first year teachers valued and expected, but did not …

The Application Of Mval Software In Assessing Teacher Performance: A Case Study, Pauline P. Stonehouse

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the introduction of mVal software and Charlotte Danielson Rubrics (CDR) as teacher evaluation tools to compare the process and outcomes of the new initiative with traditional systems and to evaluate the software from the perspective of participants in the system. Using a case study approach, the research focused on a single school district, first on the management of change, then on the experience of classroom practitioners and building principals as they adopted mVal and CDR for teacher evaluation in 2006-2007. Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Modulates Nmda Receptors In The Central Nervous System, Javier H. Jara Nov 2008

Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Modulates Nmda Receptors In The Central Nervous System, Javier H. Jara

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple cytokines are secreted in the brain during inflammatory conditions and likely affect neuronal survival. Previous studies demonstrated that glutamate and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) kill neurons via activation of the NMDA and TNFα receptors, respectively. Nevertheless the mechanisms of neuronal death are not completely elucidated. The goal of this study was to characterize the signaling cross-talk pathway initiated during this inflammation-related mechanism of cell death. Stimulation of mouse cortical neuron cultures with TNFα resulted in a transient increase in NMDA receptor-dependent calcium influx that is additive with NMDA stimulation and inhibited by pretreatment with the NMDA receptor antagonist. …

Showcasing Student, Faculty And Staff Publications: Promoting, Populating And Publishing In A Small Liberal Arts College Institutional Repository, Janet Sietmann, Teresa Fishel

Staff Publications

Institutional repositories are more than just a place to deposit faculty pre-prints, post-print, and OA articles. IRs offer colleges and universities an opportunity to showcase student senior theses, award winning papers, and student peer-reviewed journals. We have also found that IRs can provide a means of distributing campus publications in an open access environment. What began as a solution for managing student honor theses has expanded to include three student peer-reviewed journals, a campus alumni publication, and the entire series of publications for our Institute for Global Citizenship. Using the bepress software in DigitalCommons, the Macalester College library has taken …
