Design And Implementation Of A Hard Real-Time Telerobotic Control System Using Sensor-Based Assist Functions, Eduardo J. Veras-Jorge Nov 2008

Design And Implementation Of A Hard Real-Time Telerobotic Control System Using Sensor-Based Assist Functions, Eduardo J. Veras-Jorge

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a novel concept of a hard real-time telerobotic control system using sensory-based assistive functions combining autonomous control mode, force and motion-based virtual fixtures, and scaled teleoperation. The system has been implemented as a PC-based multithreaded, real-time controller with a haptic user interface and a 6-DoF slave manipulator. A telerobotic system is a system that allows a human to control a manipulator remotely and the human control is combined with computer control. A telerobotic control system with sensor-based assistance capabilities enables the user to make high-level decisions, such as target object selection, and it enables the system to …

Managing Geographic Data As An Asset: A Case Study In Large Scale Data Management, Clay Smithers Nov 2008

Managing Geographic Data As An Asset: A Case Study In Large Scale Data Management, Clay Smithers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Geographic data is a hallowed element within the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) discipline. As geographic data faces increased usage in distributed and mobile environments, the ability to access and maintain that data can become challenging. Traditional methods of data management through the use of file storage, databases, and data catalog software are valuable in their ability to organize data, but provide little information about how the data was collected, how often the data is updated, and what value the data holds for an organization. By defining geographic data as an asset it becomes a valuable resource that requires acquisition, maintenance …

Metadrama And Antitheatricality In Shakespeare’S King Lear And Troilus And Cressida, Douglas R. Willcox Nov 2008

Metadrama And Antitheatricality In Shakespeare’S King Lear And Troilus And Cressida, Douglas R. Willcox

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Shakespeare uses metadrama as a rhetorical vehicle for responding to antitheatricalism; realistic drama and staged theatricality therefore coexist in his plays. The cultural context of the early modern era, especially its antitheatrical rhetoric and the predominance of theatricality throughout the structures of its society, illumines the interaction of metadrama and antitheatricality Shakespeare's plays, particularly Troilus and Cressida and King Lear. By failing to consider adequately the unique nature of the emergence of early modern theater and the equally distinct reaction to its popularity, previous scholarship considering antitheatricality has exhibited essentialism and a universalizing tendency similar to that of the …

In Vivo Trafficking Of Endogenous Opioid Receptors, Yulin Wang, Elisabeth J. Van Bockstaele, Lee-Yuan Liu-Chen Nov 2008

In Vivo Trafficking Of Endogenous Opioid Receptors, Yulin Wang, Elisabeth J. Van Bockstaele, Lee-Yuan Liu-Chen

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Studies on trafficking of endogenous opioid receptors in vivo are subject of the present review. In many of the in vivo studies, the use of semi-quantitative immuno-electron microscopy is the approach of choice. Endogenous opioid receptors display differential subcellular distributions with μ opioid receptor (MOPR) being mostly present on the plasma membrane and δ- and κ-opioid receptors (DOPR and KOPR, respectively) having a significant intracellular pool. Etorphine and DAMGO cause endocytosis of the MOPR, but morphine does not, except in some dendrites. Interestingly, chronic inflammatory pain and morphine treatment promote trafficking of intracellular DOPR to the cell surface which may …

Front-Loading Urban Stormwater Management For Success – A Perspective Incorporating Current Studies On The Implementation Of Retrofit Low-Impact Development, William D. Shuster, Matthew A. Morrison, Rachel Webb Nov 2008

Front-Loading Urban Stormwater Management For Success – A Perspective Incorporating Current Studies On The Implementation Of Retrofit Low-Impact Development, William D. Shuster, Matthew A. Morrison, Rachel Webb

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Recent work into the implementation of low-impact development (LID) suggests that a decentralized, source-control approach has the potential to significantly reduce urban stormwater runoff quantity. The practice of retrofit stormwater management is currently dominated by demonstration projects, and some additional momentum is required to spur adoption and upscaling of LID practices so that the scale of this management approach can better match the scale of disturbance. This momentum may be provided in part by targeted research into effectiveness of stormwater best management practices insofar as research accounts for cost and effectiveness (e.g., water quality benefits, and actual stormwater capture) under …

Disproportionality As A Framework To Target Pollution Reduction From Urban Landscapes, Lawrence A. Baker, Bruce Wilson, David Fulton, Brian Horgan Nov 2008

Disproportionality As A Framework To Target Pollution Reduction From Urban Landscapes, Lawrence A. Baker, Bruce Wilson, David Fulton, Brian Horgan

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

New federal water quality regulations regarding impaired waters and urban stormwater alongside a growing need to reverse eutrophication of urban lakes are creating demand to decrease nutrient export from urban landscapes, particularly lawns. We propose that Nowak’s disproportionality framework could be used to target specific households likely to generate disproportionate levels of nutrient export. The biophysical dimension would be based on landscape vulnerability (slope; soil type; proximity to lakes); the social dimension would target “inappropriate” lawn management behaviors leading to high nutrient export on these vulnerable landscapes. Understanding of lawn nutrient cycling (biophysical dimension) and homeowner beliefs and attitudes (social …

Press Releases

Recently, hundreds of young children, including 140 kindergarten through second grade students from Bernice Childs Elementary School in Robbins, crowded into The Center for Performing Arts (CPA) at Governors State University to enjoy a rocking, musical depiction of evolution through the stories of some very large and colorful dinosaurs. As the dinosaurs romped across the stage in Mammoth Follies, they taught science lessons and the children laughed, learned, and enjoyed live theater.

Press Releases

Art isn’t just about what we see. It also has to do with what we think. Jeff Stevenson, of Flossmoor, is an adjunct professor of art at Governors State University who has been honored twice in recent weeks for work that’s both visually stimulating and thought-provoking.

Two of Stevenson’s mixed media works received the Plaza Award at last weekend’s opening reception of the 32nd Plaza Arts Competition at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago.
