Course Aspirations and Place in the Curriculum Aspirations: OT 520 seeks to equip students for ministry by providing knowledge and tools fundamental to responsible interpretation of the OT. The course neither offers a comprehensive approach, nor emphasizes direct textual study, but enhances both by developing a framework within which competent interpretation can take place. Students explore contemporary approaches to the literary character, historical and cultural setting, composition, authorship, and literary unity of these books, their various literary types, settings, and functions, and how these affect Christian reading of the OT. An important axiom of the class is that the OT …

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is “An introduction to cultural anthropology, with application to Christian evangelization and mission.” From before the beginning (Genesis 1), our Triune God has been in mission, reaching out in self-giving, other-embracing love (John 1 & I John 1). We now call this the missio Dei, “the mission of God” to remind us that it is not our mission, nor does mission belong to the church. How God does mission is best understood in the sending of Jesus the Christ (Ephesians 2:11-15). As the Father has sent Jesus, so Jesus sends us (John 20:21). It is in …

Cl 613 Equipping The Laity, Daryl L. Smith
Syllabi
This course will lay the foundation for a lay revolution within and beyond the local church. Using Ephesians 4 as our base, we will flesh out the paradigm of pastor as equipper/coach and laity as unpaid servants engaged in the work of the ministry….The delineation between laity and clergy will be minimized in favor of a model emphasizing the ministry of the whole people of God. We will address such issues as assimilation, leadership development and discipling disciplers.
The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
One of the dominant characters within the book of Lamentations is God. God is spoken about and spoken to, although the voice of God is never heard. Various voices within the text speak of God, describing both God’s actions and God’s attributes. These descriptions give rise to various, and at times conflicting images: God is the violent destroyer of the city and her inhabitants; God is an absent God, whose presence is longed for; God is a God of steadfast love and mercy; God is the one in whom future hope lies. This paper analyses the multifaceted portrayal of the …

A Contemporary Consideration Of The Role Of Metaphysics In Systematic Theology: The Contributions Of Pope John Paul Ii And Claude Tresmontant, Daniel M. Strudwick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It has been traditionally held that Catholic theology has notable metaphysical threads deeply connected with the fabric of its faith and its systematic presentation. This dissertation focuses upon those "metaphysical threads" in order to explore their past, present and possible future status within theology. In each section the goal is to investigate the contributions of John Paul II and Claude Tresmontant and the role they believe metaphysics has within Catholic Systematic theology. This work attempts to present and assess whether, which, and why components of metaphysics, according to John Paul II and Tresmontant, should be retained even in light of …

"The Anchor Of The Soul That Enters Within The Veil": The Ascension Of The "Son" In The Letter To The Hebrews, Felix H. Cortez
Dissertations
Problem
This dissertation studies the nature of Jesus’ ascension to heaven and its role in the argument of Hebrews.
Method
The study consists of an analysis of those passages in which Jesus’ ascension is referred to directly (Heb 1:6; 4:14-16; 6:19-20; 9:11-14, 24; 10:19-22) and a study of the imagery Hebrews uses to couch its theology, giving special attention to the role of this imagery in the progression of the argument. The study is both exegetical and theological in nature, seeking to provide an analysis of specific passages as well as systematization of their import.
Results
The six passages that …

The Trauma Of Stalinism Narrated In Varlam T. Shalamov's Kolymskie Rasskazy : Missiological Implications For Contemporary Russia, Yuri N. Drumi
Dissertations
Stalinism and the punitive system of the Gulag left an indelible stamp on the entire social matrix of Russia. Because of the multidimensional and multigenerational nature of the trauma of Stalinism, Russian society retains the label of a traumatized culture. This dissertation explores the significance of this phenomenon for contemporary Christian mission in Russia.
The narratives of Varlam T. Shalamov's Kolymskie rasskazy provided an empirical (based on sensory evidence) inquiry into the reality of enormous sufferings experienced by the inmates of the Kolyma Gulag. Holy Scripture, on the other hand, provided the theological (faith-based) inquiry into the causes and implications …

Bs 504 Xl Introduction To Biblical Studies: Old Testament, Mark J. Boda
Syllabi
This course lays the foundation for Old Testament study at Asbury by providing a window into the historical, cultural and geographical background, the literary and theological content and the practical relevance of the Old Testament. The goal is to provide the information and tools which will enable the students to experience the text of the Old Testament throughout their lives through a three-dimensional reading. The student will not only grapple with the content of these books and their backgrounds, but also with the methods for interpreting them in a modern context.

Within the broad sweep of the four main periods of the Church (Early, Medieval, Reformation, and Modern), students will consider key persons, events, developments, movements, and theological concepts. Special attention is devoted to intellectual history (the history of ideas) and to religious biography (the role key individuals have played in the story of Christianity). Open to MA students (other than MATS) only.

Imprecatory Speech-Acts In The Book Of Acts, David H. Wenkel
Imprecatory Speech-Acts In The Book Of Acts, David H. Wenkel
The Asbury Journal
Theologies of prayer in Acts have long neglected imprecatory prayers or curses as integral to the theological agenda of Luke. This article seeks to survey the instances of imprecations in Acts to determine how they function as speech-acts. The article makes two conclusions about imprecations in Acts based on the survey. First, imprecations identify the true People of God in the midst of competing claims. Second, imprecations reveal how one can participate in the salvific work of God.

Loving One's (Israelite) Neighbor: Election And Commandment In Leviticus 19, Joel Kaminsky
Religion: Faculty Publications
This essay illuminates a number of nuances implicit in the commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself" by exploring its connection to Israel's election theology as well as to the larger Priestly theology that forms much of the framework of the Torah.

“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)
I remember quite well my earliest exemplar in Christian education, Dr. John Blanchard, commenting that the primary challenge facing the Christian teacher was to help our students develop critical thinking without creating a corrosively cynical or skeptical mindset. “All truth is God’s truth,” he would say, quoting Frank Gaebelein, so that we could be boldly confident in our teaching, while still remaining faithful shepherds of our students and of the Lord’s word. But how does one go …

Reaching The Indian Communities In Zambia: A Biblical Model Of Evangelism, John Shumba
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Statistics show that there are a significant number of Asian-Indians who are Zambian nationals. But the church in Zambia has not come up with a program to reach them with the gospel. Therefore, it is important to develop a biblical model of evangelism to reach the Indian communities.
Method
Studies were conducted using available data to obtain information on the social, religious, cultural, and political milieu of the Indian communities in order to develop a modality for cross-cultural mission based on missiological principles and social science disciplines.
Results
Results indicate that there is need for a training program to …
