The Big Sky Model: A Regional Collaboration For Participatory Research On Environmental Health In The Rural West, Tony J. Ward, Diana Vanek, Nancy Marra, Andrij Holian, Earle Adams, David Jones, Randy Knuth

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

As an innovative community-based framework for science learning, the Big Sky Model is guiding high school and tribal college students from rural areas of Montana and Idaho in their understanding of chemical, physical, and environmental health concepts in the context of their own homes, schools, and communities. Students participate in classroom lessons and continue with systematic inquiry through actual field research to investigate a pressing, real-world issue: understanding the complex links between poor air quality and respiratory health outcomes. This article provides background information, outlines the procedure for implementing the model, and discusses its effectiveness as demonstrated through various evaluation …

Atonement In Hosea And The Prodigal Son: Relationality As Personhood And The Being Of God, Stephen Sherwood Sep 2008

Atonement In Hosea And The Prodigal Son: Relationality As Personhood And The Being Of God, Stephen Sherwood

Seminary Masters Theses

My project will provide a survey of traditional atonement metaphors, with a particular emphasis upon contrasting penal substitution with a covenantal relational understanding of the atonement, and will then posit that a covenantal relational approach is ideal for resonance with a postmodem audience.

I will seek to determine whether any single biblical metaphor or cluster of metaphors provides an interpretive matrix for all discussion of the atonement in a way that is both biblically faithful and conceptually accessible to a postmodem world. I contend that atonement discussions in typical evangelical contexts may be both biblically insufficient and culturally inadequate and …

The Mother Church: Mary Baker Eddy And The Practice Of Sentimentalism, Claudia Stokes Sep 2008

The Mother Church: Mary Baker Eddy And The Practice Of Sentimentalism, Claudia Stokes

English Faculty Research

“The Mother Church” analyzes the influence of literary sentimentalism on the writings and doctrine of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science. Having attempted a career as a sentimental poet in her early life, Eddy imported sentimental notions of motherhood and parent-child separation into Christian Science belief and iconography.

Archaeological Perspectives On The Effects Of Medieval Drought In Prehistoric California, Terry L. Jones, Al Schwitalla Sep 2008

Archaeological Perspectives On The Effects Of Medieval Drought In Prehistoric California, Terry L. Jones, Al Schwitalla

Social Sciences

Inspired by Stine's [1994. Extreme and persistent drought in California and Patagonia during Medieval Time. Nature 369, 546–549.] findings from Mono Lake and Graumlich's [1993. A 1000-year record of temperature and precipitation in the Sierra Nevada. Quaternary Research 39, 249–255.] tree-ring study from the southern Sierra Nevada, California archaeologists have for over a decade been investigating the possibility that prehistoric societies were noticeably impacted by severe droughts during the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA; cal A.D. 800–1350). Decreased production at obsidian sources, dramatic increases in bead production, trade, and sociopolitical complexity in the Channel Islands, and subsistence changes on the central …

The Influence Of Risk Perception, Vulnerability And Community Level Processes On Human-Wildlife Conflict In Southeastern Kenya, Jerry K. Daday, Douglas C. Smith, Michael K. Stokes, Charles Kimwele

Sociology Faculty Presentations

The prior literature on the sociology of disasters has primarily examined community responses to large-scale episodic disasters, such as in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. However, the study of persistent and chronic disasters in developing countries represents an area that has largely been ignored in prior studies. Flint and Luloff’s (2005) Inter-actional theory as a framework, our research examines the influence of perceived risk, vulnerability and community characteristics on human-wildlife conflict among 275 subsistence-based farmers living in four small villages in Southeastern Kenya. These farmers rely on a horticultural and pastoral economy for survival and …

Black Silk, Brown Silk: China And Beyond—Traditional Practice Meets Fashion, Abby Lillethun Sep 2008

Black Silk, Brown Silk: China And Beyond—Traditional Practice Meets Fashion, Abby Lillethun

Department of Art and Design Scholarship and Creative Works

This one-hour discussion panel will examine bi-colored black and brown silk textiles called chiao-chou and shiang-yin-sa, (a.k.a. black gummed silk, Canton silk, cloud perfumed silk, gambiered silk, and by other names). Little known in the West, these textiles express cultural identities associated with a specific geographic locals where the required mud treatment can take place. Thus, the textiles have primarily been made in southern China in Guangdong province and in Southeast Asia in Thailand and Vietnam where Chinese immigration occurred. Since their heyday during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), they faded from use. The panel first contextualizes the textiles and the …

The Chilean Pension System At 25 Years: The Evolution Of A Revolution, Gregory J. Buchholz, Alberto Coustasse, Patricio Silva, Peter Hilsenrath Sep 2008

The Chilean Pension System At 25 Years: The Evolution Of A Revolution, Gregory J. Buchholz, Alberto Coustasse, Patricio Silva, Peter Hilsenrath

Management Faculty Research

The 1981 reform of the Chilean pension system was revolutionary at its time. It was the first instance of a mature public Pay-As-You-Go social security system being converted into a mandatory defined contribution system managed by the private sector. This paper contends that a unique confluence of events were responsible for this change. The rise of a dictatorship in Chile, a struggling public retirement system, and a cadre of Chicago oriented economists determined to make Chile a model free market neoliberal economy. This was later followed by the Washington Consensus and the promotion of Chilean reform by the World Bank. …

Prevalence Of Mental Health Issues In The Borderlands: A Comparative Perspective, Kathleen A. O'Connor, Robert L. Anders, Hector Balcazar, Jorge Ibarra, Eduardo Perez, Luis Flores, Melchor Ortiz, Nathaniel H. Bean Sep 2008

Prevalence Of Mental Health Issues In The Borderlands: A Comparative Perspective, Kathleen A. O'Connor, Robert L. Anders, Hector Balcazar, Jorge Ibarra, Eduardo Perez, Luis Flores, Melchor Ortiz, Nathaniel H. Bean

Departmental Papers (S&A)

The purpose of this paper is to (a) examine the results of a binational study of two colonias near El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, focusing on mental health and (b) analyze those results in relation to the existing literature on Hispanic mental health to determine how border regions compare with Hispanic enclaves in nonborder regions. We focus on gender, birthplace, length of residency, and level of acculturation correlated with self-reported diagnoses of depression in our analysis. Our survey instrument incorporates portions of the Behavioral Risk Factor and Surveillance Survey; the SF36, version 2; and the CAGE scale for …

Welfare And Family Economic Security: Toward A Place-Based Poverty Knowledge, Deborah A. Harris, Domenico Parisi Sep 2008

Welfare And Family Economic Security: Toward A Place-Based Poverty Knowledge, Deborah A. Harris, Domenico Parisi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996 is viewed by many as a resounding success. Its success, however, is predicated primarily on caseload reduction rather than improvement of family well-being. In addition, provisions in the act ignore the importance of place in shaping one's life chances. Using Alice O'Connor's influential book, Poverty Knowledge, as a framework, we discuss findings from a qualitative study that examines how low-income families plan for a life without welfare in places with different opportunities and structural constraints. We find that returns to TANF are common among welfare leavers and that place …

Lost In Appalachia: The Unexpected Impact Of Welfare Reform On Older Women In Rural Communities, Debra A. Henderson, Ann R. Tickamyer Sep 2008

Lost In Appalachia: The Unexpected Impact Of Welfare Reform On Older Women In Rural Communities, Debra A. Henderson, Ann R. Tickamyer

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A primary goal of welfare reform was to overcome welfare dependency through the promotion of work and the setting of lifetime limits. While atf irst blush thisg oal may have appearedr easonablef or young recipients, it does not address the needs of older recipients, particularly women. Based on in-depth interviews with welfare recipients in four impoverished rural Appalachian counties over a four year time span (1999-2001; 2004), this paper evaluates the experiences of older women as they confront the changes brought on by welfare reform legislation. Findings suggest that impoverished older women in isolated rural communities experience multiple crises as …

The Grammar Of Catholic Schooling And Radically “Catholic” Schools, Martin Scanlan Sep 2008

The Grammar Of Catholic Schooling And Radically “Catholic” Schools, Martin Scanlan

Journal of Catholic Education

A “grammar of Catholic schooling” inhibits many elementary and secondary Catholic schools from reflecting on how they practice Catholic Social Teaching (CST). The values of human dignity, the common good and a preferential option for the marginalized are central to CST. Schools can live these values by serving children who live in poverty, are racial, ethnic, and linguistic minorities, or have disabilities. This article demonstrates how a grammar of Catholic schooling has allowed Catholic schools to fall into recruitment and retention patterns antithetical to CST. Drawing upon a multicase, qualitative study of three urban Catholic elementary schools serving marginalized students, …

Teaching Justice After Macintyre: Toward A Catholic Philosophy Of Moral Education, Roger Bergman Sep 2008

Teaching Justice After Macintyre: Toward A Catholic Philosophy Of Moral Education, Roger Bergman

Journal of Catholic Education

How is the commitment to social justice sustained over a lifetime? This would seem to be a matter of character, and that calls attention to the Aristotelian tradition in ethics. No one provides as much insight into the challenge of the contemporary appropriation of this tradition as Alasdair MacIntyre. Although a moral philosopher rather than a moral educator, MacIntyre’s critique of the failure of the Enlightenment project to construct a rationally based universal ethic, coupled with a critique of the modern nation-state of liberal capitalism as antithetical to the practice of virtue for the common good, provides a challenging if …

The Value Of Fiat Money With An Outside Bank: An Experimental Game, Juergen Huber, Martin Shubik, Shyam Sunder Sep 2008

The Value Of Fiat Money With An Outside Bank: An Experimental Game, Juergen Huber, Martin Shubik, Shyam Sunder

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Why people accept intrinsically worthless fiat money in exchange for real goods and services has been a longstanding question. There are many competing sufficient explanations that may confound each other in practice but can be individually tested in isolation experimentally. In this paper we examine a sufficient explanation of the value of fiat money through the existence of a debt instrument which allows consumption to be moved earlier in time. We present experimental evidence that the theoretical predictions about the behavior of such economies work reasonably well in a laboratory setting. The import of this finding for the theory of …
