Is 501 Christian Formation: Kingdom, Church, And World, Robert A. Danielson
Syllabi
What is the mission of the church? Behind this question is a cluster of related questions, the most important focused on the nature of God's creative and redemptive purpose (as this is expressed in the biblical story), its ongoing expression in the world, and its consummation in the eschaton. Participants in this course will explore how the church might discern, embrace, and participate in God's own mission. We will consider the following questions, along with others which may arise: 1. What is the Kingdom of God? 2. What is the Church? 3. How is the Kingdom present in the World …

Course Description This course introduces students to various approaches to research design, research methods and dissertation writing for doctoral students in missiology and intercultural studies. Methods are the link between questions and answers. The problem is finding the appropriate methods that discover data that shed light on the problem at hand. A well-designed research project should provide a door for the researcher to enter the stream of literature being produced about a particular topic. The goal of this course is to introduce students to a variety of research strategies and tools so that the student will be able to contribute …

Me 636 World (Transcultural) Evangelism, Robert G. Tuttle
Syllabi
COURSE DESCRIPTION In an age of increasing mobility across cultural boundaries it becomes more and more necessary to understand the Christian faith from a global perspective. Several issues, therefore, will be addressed in this course. Primarily, how do we make decisions regarding that which is essential for Christian commitment across cultural lines? How do we detach ourselves from parts of our gospel understanding that may be culturally bound? How can we sensitize ourselves to issues than transcend cultural boundaries that might actually assist our communication of a relevant transcultural gospel?

Syllabi
Course description This course explores the major exegetical issues in the Book of Judges and provides students with opportunities to apply original-language tools to several of the book’s salient passages. The primary concern in any exegetical work rests in the attempt to see beyond the limited perspectives of our particular cultural heritages and experience the text of the OT as a witness from a time, place, culture and ethnic location far removed from our own. Once we have learned to receive God's word across a cultural and ethnic divide, we become better able to communicate our witness to God's word …

The Induction Of First Year And Transferring Elementary School Teachers: A Multiple Case Study, Patricia L. Lequier
The Induction Of First Year And Transferring Elementary School Teachers: A Multiple Case Study, Patricia L. Lequier
All ETDs from UAB
This qualitative, multiple case study explored the experiences of elementary teachers and principals participating in school induction processes. The staggering rates at which new teachers are leaving the profession, coupled with high rates of teacher attrition, teacher retirements, and increases in student enrollment formed the impetus for this study. These factors have collectively contributed to the nation’s crucial demand for close to two million teachers. In an effort to increase the retention rate of new teachers, schools across the nation have implemented teacher induction processes. Teacher induction processes focus on providing support for teachers in their transition from their roles …
A Professional Journey: A Grounded Theory Study On The Experiences Of Reading Coaches As They Transition From Being A Teacher Of Children To A Leader Of Adults, Victoria Spear
All ETDs from UAB
This qualitative grounded theory study described the experiences of Alabama Reading Initiative reading coaches as they transitioned from being teachers of children to being leaders of adults. This study addressed the gap in literature regarding the actual lived experiences of these professionals who were catalysts for change in the highly institutionalized culture of the public school setting. The study highlighted the triumphs and challenges inherent in the complex nature of institutional, professional, and personal change. The research participants were 23 practicing reading coaches in North Alabama and North Central Alabama. Forms of data collected included open-ended interviews, observations, and field …
The Barbary Wars: Ideology And Politics In Post-Revolutionary America, Christopher R. Null
The Barbary Wars: Ideology And Politics In Post-Revolutionary America, Christopher R. Null
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis examines the build-up to and the events of the First Barbary War (1801-1805) with the purpose of demonstrating that ideological factors significantly influenced the decision to go to war – specifically the republican ideology of Thomas Jefferson and his belief that this ideology represented the essence of the United States and its Revolutionary heritage. As such, Jefferson will be the main focus of this analysis. This focus is justified because it is Jefferson who broke with the policies set by his predecessors and directly engaged the Barbary States with military force. Therefore, to understand why the United States …

Cervical Cancer Risk Behaviors In Women Attending A Dysplasia Clinic In Chihuahua City, Cynthia Guerrero
Cervical Cancer Risk Behaviors In Women Attending A Dysplasia Clinic In Chihuahua City, Cynthia Guerrero
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cervical cancer mortality rates are 3.5 times higher in Chihuahua State than in Texas. Identifying risk behaviors in women living in the state of Chihuahua is important to understand what behaviors might need to be addressed through cultural relevant educational programs. My study uses a dataset collected in the summer of 2007 in a Dysplasia clinic located in Chihuahua City. This dataset provides information on six risk behaviors, two diagnostic methods of detecting cervical cancer, and women's residency by municipios. The number of live births was statistically significant in predicting cervical cancer diagnosis by Pap smear and Colposcopy. There were …
Shakespeare And The Interhuman: The Mimetic Chrysalis Of Buber's Between, Elizabeth Burford Lang
Shakespeare And The Interhuman: The Mimetic Chrysalis Of Buber's Between, Elizabeth Burford Lang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Shakespeare's plays survive and thrive from age to age in large part due to the incomparably mimetic "rightness" of his characters. However, the various schools of post-modern literary criticism - New Historicist, Cultural Materialist, most variations of cultural theory as applied to literature - definitively deny the possibility of an essential humanity, the very concept on which discussions of character and mimesis must stand.
The work of Martin Buber contributes a means of moderating that conversation. Buber, a self-described "believing" humanist, sought and achieved a semantic framework capable of describing the intersection of man, fellow man, and spirit while obviating …

Ms. Cuffel works with sources in Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, Latin, and more than a few of the various medieval vernaculars, which has to be somewhat intimidating to a reviewer whose connection with the me- dieval is Old Icelandic and Old English and whose connection with Hebrew was via the whip of Bar Mitzvah and who learned all the words needed to vaccinate anally thousands of chickens in the lul, the chick- enhouse, on a kibbutz way back in 1964. I thus have to take the author at her word except, I suppose, when it comes to knowledge of the re- …

Dwelling, Walking, Serving: Organic Preservation Along The Camino De Santiago Pilgrimage Landscape, Mercedes Chamberlain Quesada-Embid
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This study is an exploration of the people and the landscape of the well-known Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Although there are many routes that make up the entirety of the pilgrimage, this research is specifically focused on the landscape of the Camino Francés, or French Route, in northern Spain. The path has been written about in many ways and for a myriad of reasons since it became affiliated with the Christian tradition in the early ninth century. This research, however, is different. By way of an environmental history and hermeneutic approach, an investigation of the interrelated and overlapping human …

We present the results from the second in a series of ongoing experimental studies of public perceptions of nanotechnology risks. Like the first study, the current one found that members of the public, most of whom know little or nothing about nanotechnology, polarize along cultural lines when exposed to information about it. Extending previous results, the current study also found that cultural polarization of this sort interacts with the perceived cultural identities of policy advocates. Polarization along expected lines grew even more extreme when subjects of diverse cultural outlooks observed an advocate whose values they share advancing an argument they …

The power stroke of mastication has been traditionally divided into two parts, one which precedes centric occlusion, and the other which follows it-"Phase I" and "Phase II," respectively. Recent studies of primate mastication have called into question the role of Phase II in food processing, as they have found little muscle activity or accompanying bone strain following centric occlusion. That said, many researchers today look to Phase II facets to relate diet to patterns of dental microwear. This suggests the need to reevaluate microwear patterns on Phase I facets. Here we use texture analysis to compare and contrast microwear on …
