Claiming Equality: Puerto Rican Farmworkers In Western New York, Ismael Garcia-Colon Jan 2008

Claiming Equality: Puerto Rican Farmworkers In Western New York, Ismael Garcia-Colon

Publications and Research

n July of 1966, a group of Puerto Rican migrant workers protested against police brutality and discrimination in North Collins, a small farm community of western NewYork. Puerto Rican farmworkers made up a substantial part of the population, and had transformed the ethnic, racial, and gender landscape of the town. Local officials and residents produced and reproduced images of Puerto Ricans as inferior subjects within US racial and ethnic hierarchies. Those negative images of Puerto Ricans shaped the way in which local authorities elaborated policies of social control against these farmworkers in North Collins. At the same time, Puerto Rican …

Enterobius Vermicularis Ancient Dna In Pre-Columbian Human Populations, Alena Mayo Iniguez, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira, Adauto Araujo, Ana Carolina, Paulo Vincente Jan 2008

Enterobius Vermicularis Ancient Dna In Pre-Columbian Human Populations, Alena Mayo Iniguez, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira, Adauto Araujo, Ana Carolina, Paulo Vincente

Karl Reinhard Publications

In prehistoric populations the paleoparasitological findings show an Enterobius vennicularis homogeneous distribution among North American hunter-gatherers intensified with the advent of agriculture. The same occurred in the transition from nomad hunter-gatherers to sedentary farmers in South America, although E. vermicularis infection encompasses only the ancient Andean peoples. Since molecular techniques are sensitive in detecting ancient DNA (aDNA), in this work we have performed a molecular paleoparasitological study of E. vermicularis. aDNA was recovered from North and South American coprolites (4110 BC-AD 900). Human (cox 2 and HVR) and pinworm (5S rRNA spacer) sequences were determined. The sequence analysis confirmed E. …

Pond-Women Revelations: The Subaltern Registers In Maithil Women's Expressive Forms, Coralynn V. Davis Jan 2008

Pond-Women Revelations: The Subaltern Registers In Maithil Women's Expressive Forms, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Journal Articles

Ponds are ubiquitous in the Maithil region of Nepal, and they figure prominently in folk narratives and ceremonial paintings produced by women there. I argue that in Maithil women's folktales, as in their paintings, the trope of ponds shifts the imaginative register toward women's perspectives and the importance of women's knowledge and influence in shaping Maithil society, even as this register shift occurs within plots featuring male protagonists. I argue further that in the absence of a habit of exegesis in their expressive arts, and given the cross-referential, dialogic nature of expressive practices, a methodology that draws into interpretive conversation …

Democratic Pr? : Relationship-Building Between Members Of Parliament And Their Constituents, Andrea Urbinati Jan 2008

Democratic Pr? : Relationship-Building Between Members Of Parliament And Their Constituents, Andrea Urbinati

Theses : Honours

This paper puts forward the proposition that relationship-building public relations could facilitate a more genuine engagement between Members of Parliament and their constituents. Much has been written about Grunig and Hunt's (1984) two-way symmetric public relations and its role in establishing, building and maintaining a sense of community between an organisation and its publics. Previous work has extended the relationship management paradigm to various sub contexts such as the non-for profit sector. However, the majority of literature provides an organisation-centric perspective. This paper takes the Grunigian notion of symbiotic relationship building and applies it to the political context. This study …

The Myth And Reality Of Prom: A Qualitative Examination Of The American High School Prom Experience, Sarah C. Brandt Jan 2008

The Myth And Reality Of Prom: A Qualitative Examination Of The American High School Prom Experience, Sarah C. Brandt

Honors Program Theses

This research compares social and cultural myths about the prom with the reality of the high school prom experience. Data include content analysis of prom-related popular media, and ten qualitative interviews with individuals aged 20-25 about their high school prom experiences. Perceptions of what prom is supposed to be like are influence heavily by the media; study participants' real prom experiences were quite different. Additionally, participants' prom experiences related less with popular media depictions and more with their actual social status in high school culture. Findings support that the media present a narrow, idealized depiction of the prom that rarely …

Biracial Filipino Americans In Society, Neal Andrew Molitor

Honors Program Theses

Since I grew up in a small and predominantly white Midwestern town, I was acutely aware of the common cultural aspects of my Caucasian side. I was able to familiarize myself with the Western cultural values, and I felt comfortable within them. My appearance may have differed from my peers' but I was able to assimilate myself with all the local customs. However, I still felt that I was neglecting a major part of my identity. I needed to know more about the other half of my cultural heritage, and I knew that college and this thesis project would provide …

Everybody Is Making Love/Or Else Expecting Rain: Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2008

Everybody Is Making Love/Or Else Expecting Rain: Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

One of the most controversial policy questions in all of institutional mental disability law is the extent to which patients in psychiatric hospitals have a right to voluntary sexual interaction. The resolution of this matter involves the resolution of difficult and sensitive questions of law, social policy, clinical judgment, politics, religion, and family structures.

As difficult as these questions are in cases involving civil hospitals, the difficulties are exacerbated when the topic is the application of the right in forensic hospitals. Such facilities typically house individuals involved in the criminal justice system (either those who may be incompetent to stand …

A Multi -Case Study Of Teacher Retention With Veteran Teachers In Hard To Staff Schools, Jacqueline Lissette Garcia Jan 2008

A Multi -Case Study Of Teacher Retention With Veteran Teachers In Hard To Staff Schools, Jacqueline Lissette Garcia

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Over 40 percent of teachers leave the profession within the first five years (Darling-Hammond, 2003; Berry, 2004), and turnover is higher in schools characterized as hard to staff (Ingersoll, 2001). Hard to staff schools often have higher attrition rates, and also have a higher percentage of under qualified teachers (Berry, 2004). The need to retain highly qualified teachers in teaching positions in hard to staff schools is critical because teachers are less likely to continue to teach in schools characterized as such. A multi-case study design was employed to investigate four teachers who have taught in hard to staff schools …

The Implications Of Milieu Upon Educational Administration, Margaret Elizabeth Draper Cahoon

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Problem. It was the purpose of this study to answer the following questions: (1) What are the implications of changing milieu upon administrative leadership? (2) Ancillary to the above, does the literature suggest a separate type of administrative leadership for bureaucratic organizations?;Method. The research method utilized throughout the study was the content analysis technique of the historian whereby the conceptual literature over a period of time was critically examined. Data along the lines of the two sub-questions of the study were collected, collated, and interpreted in an attempt to discover new knowledge; Results. During the Classical period, it became …

The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal Jan 2008

The Lost Promise Of Heaven: An Examination Of Gender In Children's Literature, 1790--1830, Ea Nicole Madrigal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The United States republic can be defined by its cultural, social, and political change. Historians like Linda Kerber contend that this moment magnified gender difference. This was in fact a time that gender expectations were further defined. However, representations of gender in children's literature indicate that although some stories illustrated different roles and expectations for male and female readers, there were other stories that emphasized similarities between all children; Analogous to Susan Juster's findings from this period that men and women described religious conversion experiences similarly, religious children's literature detailed the spiritual commonalities of boys and girls. Gender was insignificant …

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann Jan 2008

An Alternative Study Of Chinese History: Two Daoist Temples, Joan Lorraine Mann

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Daoist temple is a largely overlooked feature in the study of the history of China. The temple has been an important component of Chinese history since the Zhou dynasty, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period and continuing into the Warring States period.1 It is Daoism that made immortals of mortal Chinese war heroes, emperors, leaders, and ancestors. It is these celestials and immortals, found only in a Chinese Daoist temple that can so successfully relate the history of the common man in China. The Chinese have venerated these Daoist celestials and immortals to the status of "gods," and …

Optimal Foraging Theory And Early Archaic Plant Use At North Creek Shelter, Sara C Hill Jan 2008

Optimal Foraging Theory And Early Archaic Plant Use At North Creek Shelter, Sara C Hill

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Optimal Foraging Theory has received considerable intellectual criticism since its use as an archaeological tool for understanding human behavior. In this thesis, I will evaluate Optimal Foraging Theory with an empirical test from North Creek Shelter, an archaeological site located in the Escalante Basin on the northern portion of the Colorado Plateau. This test will focus on plant utilization by the early Archaic occupants of the site. An environmental reconstruction for the Escalante Basin will be used to determine the range and quantity of plant resources available to the early Archaic occupants of North Creek Shelter. Then a botanical assemblage …

The "White-Eyed" Eastern Towhee: A Molecular Assessment Of The Validity Of Pipilo Erythrophthalmus Alleni, Jeremy Shawn Batten Jan 2008

The "White-Eyed" Eastern Towhee: A Molecular Assessment Of The Validity Of Pipilo Erythrophthalmus Alleni, Jeremy Shawn Batten

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Exploring the factors that influence the distribution and diversification of organisms is essential to the field of evolutionary biology. Molecular examination across a species' distribution may result in the discovery of differentiated populations that, when interpreted in the context of past events (e.g. climate change), may elucidate the causal mechanisms. Comparative phylogeographic studies have revealed both similar and disparate genetic patterns among co-distributed organisms, although similar geographic patterns may differ greatly in temporal scale and thus in the magnitude of genetic differentiation. Studies of diverse taxa occurring across the southeastern United States have revealed several common patterns of intraspecific divergence …

Sex And The Agricultural Transition: Dental Health Among Early Agricultural Females, Misty Fields Jan 2008

Sex And The Agricultural Transition: Dental Health Among Early Agricultural Females, Misty Fields

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This project analyzed dentition from a sample (n =142) of Early Agricultural period skeletons (B.C. 1600-200 A.D.) from the site of La Playa (SON F:10:3), Sonora, Mexico. Data was collected on pathology rates for dental caries and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL) to test the hypothesis that hormone-fluctuations associated with pregnancy increase dental pathology in females. Males and females were not found to have significant differences in caries rates. However, statistically significant differences in AMTL were found with females exhibiting more tooth loss than males ( p=.022). When compared across age categories, reproductive-age females had substantial increases in AMTL compared to …

True Reflections? An Assessment Of The Correlation Between Self-Reported Racial Identities And Craniometric Patterning, Rebecca V Lockwood Jan 2008

True Reflections? An Assessment Of The Correlation Between Self-Reported Racial Identities And Craniometric Patterning, Rebecca V Lockwood

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Modern anthropologists reject the notion that individuals can be assigned to clear-cut divisions of racial origins, yet this identification technique is a required practice in forensic settings. Forensic anthropologists study morphological features and craniometric values to assess the possible ancestry of an unidentified set of human remains. This ancestral assessment is subsequently translated into a "racial" description, as these categories are commonly used and understood by society; Race, however, is an artificial social construction, and racial categories fluctuate over time and space. Consequently, the forensic assessment of race based on cranial characteristics could significantly differ from an individual's self-assessment of …

Characterizing The Chipped Stone From Kritou Marottou Ais Yiorkis, Cyprus: Investigations Into The Cypro-Ppnb, Kasey Erin O'Horo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Kritou Marottou Ais Yiorkis represents the Middle Cypro-Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, a formative period in the prehistory of Cyprus. Many other aspects of the site lend to its significance, including the sites inland, upland location, presence of cattle, anomalous architecture, interesting botanical assemblage, and consistent yet distinctive chipped stone assemblage. The chipped stone from Ais Yiorkis was employed to examine economic choices and site use patterns. An overall characterization describes the assemblage, providing baseline data. Research questions investigate artifact variation, intra-site distribution, and inter-site compariSon The results have proven the assemblage to be contemporary, revealed a low degree of variation, very …

Prehistoric Settlement And Land Use: A Predictive Model Of The Shivwits Plateau, Northwest Arizona, Glendee Ane Osborne

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this research is to develop, test, and utilize a Geographic Information Systems based predictive model of prehistoric site location and settlement for the Shivwits Plateau in northwestern Arizona to better understand settlement patterns and land use across the region from the Archaic to Protohistoric period. The GIS data are used to determine site location probability for specific temporal phases of Virgin Anasazi cultural activity. The database includes previously recorded sites, vegetation, elevation, aspect, slope, and water resources which are integrated to establish probable patterns of land use and settlement; My thesis examines two research questions. First, is …

Formula For Success: How Las Vegas Became The Entertainment Capital Of The World, Scott M Pruett Jan 2008

Formula For Success: How Las Vegas Became The Entertainment Capital Of The World, Scott M Pruett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This paper will espouse the theory that Las Vegas was able to evolve into the entertainment capital of the world by establishing itself as an island of controlled social deviance. That is to say that the city became an area of regulatory exception---one with distinct legal differences in a limited geographical area---and allowed a degree of social deviance by permitting behaviors that would be illegal in nearly any other American city. My research will show that when such an environment enables its visitors to experience extended periods of pleasurable sensory stimulation, whether the inducement be physical, psychological, or chemical, this …

Communicating The Meanings Of Cultural Artifacts: An Exploratory Study Of Orientation Units, Ryan David Theroux Jan 2008

Communicating The Meanings Of Cultural Artifacts: An Exploratory Study Of Orientation Units, Ryan David Theroux

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Understanding the meanings of cultural artifacts on college campuses can provide new students with a way of learning an institution's culture and values. To help communicate the meanings of cultural artifacts, new student orientation is a common activity that provides institutions, particularly orientation units, with an opportunity to acculturate first-year students into a collegiate environment. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how orientation directors and orientation leaders perceive their roles in communicating the meanings of cultural artifacts to first-year students at four public universities in California. In-depth and focus groups interviews were conducted with participants over the …

Exploring Preschoolers' Personal Epistemologies Using Focus Groups, Denise Lynne Winsor Jan 2008

Exploring Preschoolers' Personal Epistemologies Using Focus Groups, Denise Lynne Winsor

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This is a qualitative study designed to use focus groups as a means of identifying the personal epistemologies of preschool children in an authentic learning environment. Personal epistemology is generally defined as the theory about the nature of knowledge and the process of knowing. Investigations of young children are scarce in this field, and little is known about the early onset of epistemological development. However, recent research suggests a possible connection between epistemic development and theory of mind; This study explores very young children and how their cognitive ability and interactions with peers may reveal information regarding epistemological development. The …
