Postcolonial Theological Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies, Susan Abraham Jan 2008

Postcolonial Theological Approaches To Hindu-Christian Studies, Susan Abraham

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The disciplinary boundaries of "Hindu-Christian" studies call into question the cultural and political terrain in which it is engendered. As a Christian theologian from India whose encounter with academic Hinduism is as it is taught in the US, my experience is tangential and rather critical in terms of the power issues it raises. Nevertheless, as a theologian of culture I am most interested in how the project of decolonizing theology of the study of religion should take place in the context of the North American academy. Of primary importance here is the dissolution of problematic devaluations. For example, what goes …

Comparative Theology, Comparative Religion, And Hindu-Christian Studies: Ethnography As Method, Kristin Bloomer Jan 2008

Comparative Theology, Comparative Religion, And Hindu-Christian Studies: Ethnography As Method, Kristin Bloomer

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Concerns that likely inspired today's panel can be traced textually to the beginnings of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and to the earliest writings of what we now call Hinduism. In the field of Hindu-Christian studies, these concerns suggest ethnographic approaches that are not in themselves new, but which borrow in potentially new ways from the methodological tool-boxes of anthropology, theology and the history of religions.

The Believing Game Or Methodological Believing, Peter Elbow

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Three arguments why we need the believing game: to help us find flaws in our thinking, to help us choose among competing claims, and to achieve goals that the doubting game neglects.

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler Jan 2008

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler

Animal Law Review

In its current guise, animal rights advocacy imposes few intellectual demands on its proponents, usually requiring little more than a colorful Web site and a college dictionary, the former to construct an audience, and the latter to provide the emotion-laden phrases needed to inflame that audience into supporting stringent penalties for animal-related crimes. Hard thought is not really essential for animal rights advocates to be able to proclaim an end to animal abuse or an allegiance to easing animal suffering, and the standard advocate toolkit simply need not include “rational legal analysis” among the apparatus utilized to rail against mistreatment, …

The Corporate Social Responsibility Movement As An Ethnographic Problem, John M. Conley, Cynthia A. Williams Jan 2008

The Corporate Social Responsibility Movement As An Ethnographic Problem, John M. Conley, Cynthia A. Williams

All Papers

Over the past decade, the business world has devoted an extraordinary amount of attention to the concept of "corporate social responsibility." CSR derives from the idea that the responsibility of a corporation extends beyond the traditional Anglo-American objective of providing maximal financial returns to its shareholders. Instead, CSR proponents have argued, the legitimate concerns of a corporation should include such broader objectives as sustainable growth, equitable employment practices, and long-term social and environmental well-being. CSR is now the focus of a well-defined and energetic movement that has manifested itself in a variety of ways. It is, in the anthropologist Sally …

The Science And Art Of A Community Development Short Course: An Approach To Design, Teaching, And Evaluation, Michael Louis Geneve Jan 2008

The Science And Art Of A Community Development Short Course: An Approach To Design, Teaching, And Evaluation, Michael Louis Geneve

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Community developers are often solicited to teach essential core concepts and strategies in the field but lack the consensus among their peers on which theories constitute the fundamentals. This study examines leading community development theories, concepts and approaches to establish the essential elements for a weeklong short course. In addition to content research, leading teaching theories were also explored to establish the core methods for teaching such a course. Active learning techniques were utilized to increase student participation in the learning process while building solidarity and capacity in the class. Finally, the short course was taught to a group in …

Disturbing Constructions Of Tropical Savannas And The People Who Burn Them, Cynthia Fowler Jan 2008

Disturbing Constructions Of Tropical Savannas And The People Who Burn Them, Cynthia Fowler

Faculty Scholarship

The transition from equilibrium to non-equilibrium models of ecosystems in the biological sciences during the past several decades parallels an evolution in the ways that anthropologists understand culture. Reconceptualizations of ecosystem processes (e.g., disturbance) and units (e.g., landscapes) are apparent in fire science where they have influenced a conversion from the belief that fire is a destructive artificial force to the belief that fire is a controllable natural element. What adjustments have fire scientists made in their understandings of people who ignite fires? Even though fire science literature is voluminous, the sociocultural and biophysical relationships surrounding fire are insufficiently understood. …

An Evaluation Of States’ Delivery Of Substance Abuse Treatment, Catherine Anne Collins Jan 2008

An Evaluation Of States’ Delivery Of Substance Abuse Treatment, Catherine Anne Collins

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As the economic, political, and technological landscape of America’s healthcare management system changes, states are forced to grapple with the progressively arduous task of administering substance abuse treatment programs. Using the Open Systems Model, this research examines external and internal environmental factors that influence goal displacement as it is hypothesized to occur in states’ treatment delivery systems. The findings suggest that a mix of environmental characteristics affect states’ levels of goal displacement but the factors that predict displacement in alcohol treatment are different than for the delivery of drug treatment. The internal and external environment factors that contribute to goal …

"Books Of The Hour" And "Books Of All Time": Booklists In The Evolving Library, Sarah Naper, Stephanie Wiegand Jan 2008

"Books Of The Hour" And "Books Of All Time": Booklists In The Evolving Library, Sarah Naper, Stephanie Wiegand

University Libraries Publications

Gathered by expert or novice, by individual or organization, a booklist brings together titles for either reader or librarian. Booklists may vary in intent, but all serve one ultimate purpose: to influence what is read. There are two main ideas behind encouraging an individual to read specific books: 1) to shape a better individual for society; and, 2) to encourage the individual to read for pleasure or to fulfill some immediate need. The second reason involves books that are of value at that moment, or what Ruskin refers to as "books of the hour." It is quite for one list …

Temporal Insanity: Woodland Archaeology And The Construction Of Valid Chronologies, Erin C. Dempsey Jan 2008

Temporal Insanity: Woodland Archaeology And The Construction Of Valid Chronologies, Erin C. Dempsey

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper will bring to light the problems existing in the current, working chronology employed in Woodland Period archaeology and determine how, possibly, these problems can be alleviated. I assert that creating new chronologies that speak to specific research questions and doing away with a static and unchanging culture-historical perspective in Woodland Period archaeology will help archaeologists better investigate how people lived and interacted during this time and, more importantly, how they facilitated and experienced cultural change in the Eastern Woodlands of North America. By lifting the framework culture history has superimposed on the archaeology of Woodland peoples (i.e. Adena, …

Technological Introductions And Social Change: European Technology On The Great Plains, Andrew Labounty Jan 2008

Technological Introductions And Social Change: European Technology On The Great Plains, Andrew Labounty

Nebraska Anthropologist

This paper will explore the changing structure of American Indian society with the introduction of Euro-American technology and practices on the Plains. I intend to compare and contrast social aspects of Indian culture before and after contact, including the presence and intensity of marriage exchanges, levels of exogamy, the intensity of polygyny, and degree of stratification among native groups. These comparisons will shed light on the mechanisms of culture change, showing the entire process to be gradual and often due to conscious, immediately beneficial decisions.

Collective Memory Of The Prehistoric Past And The Archaeological Landscape, Cynthia J. Wiley Jan 2008

Collective Memory Of The Prehistoric Past And The Archaeological Landscape, Cynthia J. Wiley

Nebraska Anthropologist

The crossroads of archaeological investigation and indigenous oral tradition are ripe with potential for increased interaction between archaeologists and Native Americans. This interaction may become increasingly mandated in the future as NAGPRA affects excavations and material culture collections. Currently this body of information is not being fully utilized. However, as examples of chronologically lengthy prehistoric memory develop, including myths and traditions related to Pleistocene mammals, archaeologists must be prepared to incorporate this information into research designs and interpretations. Strong (1934) and Echo-Hawk (2000) provide a way to critique and organize oral tradition for analysis. Archaeologists must build on this foundation …

Is 501 Christian Formation: Kingdom, Church, And World, Ruth Anne Reese

Syllabi

Welcome to the spring session of Kingdom, Church, and World. This course is an opportunity to critically examine our presuppositions and commitments regarding the nature of the kingdom of God and its relationship to the church and world. These are three distinct, but intimately related aspects of the reality in which we all live and engage in ministry—whether we are laypersons or clergy—and this class gives us an opportunity to examine and think through them. In this course we will have the opportunity to reflect on a number of questions and issues including: 1. What is the kingdom of God? …

Is 501 Christian Formation: Kingdom, Church And World , Lalsangkima Pachuau

Syllabi

Course Rationale: It is altogether reasonable to ask why a particular course is required. There is a sense in which this entire syllabus is intended to answer that question, but this course has at least two over-arching intentions. First, an essential skill for all engaged in Christian ministry is the ability to “think theologically.” To think theologically is not merely to be able to appropriate certain proof texts in order to give “biblical” answers to given questions. Rather, it involves the ability to begin to “get our arms around” the biblical message as a canonical whole, to be able to …
