Predicting Aged Beef Tenderness With A Hyperspectral Imaging System, Lauren M. Grimes, Govindarajan Konda Naganathan, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, Chris R. Calkins

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A hyperspectral imaging apparatus was developed to predict, at 2-day postmortem, the 14 day aged tenderness of beef. USDA Choice and Select grade longissimus steaks (n = 314) from between the 12th and 13th ribs were scanned at 2 days postmortem, vacuum packaged, aged to 14 days, and frozen. For tenderness determination, steaks were thawed overnight, scanned, cooked in an impingement oven, and slice shear force values were obtained. The model predicted three tenderness categories (tender, intermediate, tough) with 77.1% accuracy, and two tenderness categories (acceptable, tough) with 93.7% accuracy. This hyperspectral imaging system was effective in predicting 14-day aged …

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose Jan 2008

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, he or she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed …

Oral Dosage With NutrocalTm (Calcium Propionate) To Enhance Beef Tenderness, Dana Hanson, Chris R. Calkins, Johnny Horton Jan 2008

Oral Dosage With NutrocalTm (Calcium Propionate) To Enhance Beef Tenderness, Dana Hanson, Chris R. Calkins, Johnny Horton

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Oral dosage of market-weight beef steers with NutroCAL™(a source of calcium propionate) tends to increase strip loin calcium and enhance tenderness after a 14 to 21 day aging period. No responses were observed in the eye of round or the chuck tender. The time course for serum and muscle calcium response appears to be highly variable and different from calcium chloride drenching.

Meta-Analysis Of Unl Feedlot Trials Replacing Corn With Wdgs, Virgil R. Bremer, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2008

Meta-Analysis Of Unl Feedlot Trials Replacing Corn With Wdgs, Virgil R. Bremer, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A meta-analysis of UNL feedlot trials replacing dry-rolled or high-moisture corn with wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) indicated WDGS fed between 15% to 40% of diet DM was 130% the feeding value of corn. Feed: Gain, ADG, marbling score, and fat thickness responded quadratically as WDGS inclusion increased. In most cases, performance and carcass characteristics improved up to 30% to 40%, then gradually decreased. Feeding WDGS up to 40% of diet DM improved performance and quality grade.

Price Discovery In North And West Central Nebraska Livestock Auction Markets, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Leslie Aaron Stalker Jan 2008

Price Discovery In North And West Central Nebraska Livestock Auction Markets, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Leslie Aaron Stalker

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Price data from west central Nebraska livestock auction markets were used to determine the price discovery and information flow patterns between weight-gender cattle classes using time series analysis and directed acyclical graphs (DAG). Results indicated steers weighing 400-600 lb were the point of price discovery; the price change of each weight of steers impacted the price of the next heavier class of steers. Price movements for 600-700 lb heifers impacted prices of many other weight/gender classes including the price of heavier heifers and steers.

Exploring The Relationship Between The Feelings Of Isolation Among Distance Learners And The Levels Of Interaction Built Into The Online Course, Jianling Jiang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the relationship between distance learners' feelings of isolation or connectedness and the levels of interactions built into the course in a web-based distanceEducation. It asks: what is the relative effect of student active learning, instructor feedback, student/student interaction and student/instructor interaction on students' feelings of isolation or connectedness when controlling for student background information such as gender, age, employment, degree level, and distanceEducation experience. The research was conducted through an online survey on several Midwestern universities in fall of 2007. A sample of 505 students who took web-based distance courses completed the survey. A multiple hierarchical regression …

Hampton-Seabrook Estuary Restoration Compendium, Alyson L. Eberhardt, David M. Burdick

PREP Reports & Publications

The Hampton-Seabrook Estuary Habitat Restoration Compendium (HSEHRC) is a compilation of information on the historic and current distributions of salt marsh and sand dune habitats and diadromous fishes within the Hampton-Seabrook Estuary watershed. These habitats and species groups were selected due to the important ecological role they play within the watershed and with effective restoration and conservation efforts, will continue to play. Other ecologically important habitats and species, such as avifauna, shellfish and eelgrass beds, currently are or historically were present within the watershed. Shellfish and seagrass are recognized as important habitats within the Estuary, but were not included in …

Building Knowledge Capabilities: An Organisational Learning Approach, Zaana Howard, Mary M. Somerville Jan 2008

Building Knowledge Capabilities: An Organisational Learning Approach, Zaana Howard, Mary M. Somerville

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

The communal nature of knowledge production predicts the importance of creating learning organisations where knowledge arises out of processes that are personal, social, situated and active. It follows that workplaces must provide both formal and informal learning opportunities for interaction with ideas and among individuals. This grounded theory for developing contemporary learning organisations harvests insights from the knowledge management, systems sciences, and educational learning literatures. The resultant hybrid theoretical framework informs practical application, as reported in a case study that harnesses the accelerated information exchange possibilities enabled through web 2.0 social networking and peer production technologies. Through complementary organisational processes, …

The Charter And Protection Against Wrongful Conviction: Good, Bad Or Irrelevant?, Christopher Sherrin Jan 2008

The Charter And Protection Against Wrongful Conviction: Good, Bad Or Irrelevant?, Christopher Sherrin

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This paper asks whether the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as interpreted over the past 25 years, has made a positive contribution to the protection afforded in Canadian law against wrongful conviction. The paper argues that while the Charter has made a positive contribution in a couple of areas, its overall impact is not clear. It is, in fact, arguable that the Charter has made things worse for the innocent. The paper proceeds in four parts. First, the paper describes the two areas where the Charter has made a positive contribution, namely, disclosure and reverse onuses and presumptions. The …

A Bismarckian Moment: Charkaoui And Bill C-3, Craig Forcese, Lorne Waldman

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Bill C-3, an effort to remedy the core defects of the prior immigration security certificate regime, cobbles together a potentially half-hearted “special advocate” regime and converts immigration law into a de facto system of indefinite limits on liberty for foreigners. The new system will generate an inevitable series of new constitutional challenges, some of which may succeed at the Supreme Court unless the deficiencies of Bill C-3 are cured by careful innovation at the Federal Court level. This paper explores these contentions. Part II of the paper provides a brief overview of the immigration security certificate regime and the core …

Delay Sensitive Routing For Real Time Traffic Over Ad-Hoc Networks, Dipika Darshana Jan 2008

Delay Sensitive Routing For Real Time Traffic Over Ad-Hoc Networks, Dipika Darshana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Wireless ad hoc network consists of inexpensive nodes that form a mobile communication network. Due to limitations of the transmission range, the nodes rely on each other to forward packets such that messages can be delivered across the network. The selection of the path along which a packet is forwarded from the source node to the destination node is done by the routing algorithm. Most commonly used routing algorithms, though effective for non-real time applications, cannot handle real-time applications that require strict delay bounds on packet delivery. In this thesis, we propose a routing protocol that ensures timely delivery of …

A Reinforcement Learning Technique For Enhancing Human Behavior Models In A Context-Based Architecture, David Aihe Jan 2008

A Reinforcement Learning Technique For Enhancing Human Behavior Models In A Context-Based Architecture, David Aihe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A reinforcement-learning technique for enhancing human behavior models in a context-based learning architecture is presented. Prior to the introduction of this technique, human models built and developed in a Context-Based reasoning framework lacked learning capabilities. As such, their performance and quality of behavior was always limited by what the subject matter expert whose knowledge is modeled was able to articulate or demonstrate. Results from experiments performed show that subject matter experts are prone to making errors and at times they lack information on situations that are inherently necessary for the human models to behave appropriately and optimally in those situations. …

The Effectiveness Of Specifically Designed Filter Media To Reduce Nitrate And Orthophosphate In Stormwater Runoff, Mikhal Moberg Jan 2008

The Effectiveness Of Specifically Designed Filter Media To Reduce Nitrate And Orthophosphate In Stormwater Runoff, Mikhal Moberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout Central Florida surface water and ground water are decreasing in quantity and quality in part because of excess Nitrate and Phosphorus nutrients. Stormwater runoff serves as a medium for transport of Nitrate and Phosphorus to surface water and ground water. The goal of this experiment is assess the Nitrate and Phosphorus removal in stormwater using select media. The results of a literature search, batch test experimentation and column test experimentation are used to determine an optimal media blend that may be implemented in detention ponds to reduce Nitrate and Phosphorus. The extensive literature search revealed 32 different media that …

Performance Based Decision System In Determining Post Closure Care (Pcc) Duration In Florida Landfills, Asawari Kulkarni Jan 2008

Performance Based Decision System In Determining Post Closure Care (Pcc) Duration In Florida Landfills, Asawari Kulkarni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study is an evaluation of Post Closure Care (PCC) duration of landfills using performance based methodology. The post closure care phase begins once the landfill is closed. As required by the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D, PCC duration for municipal solid waste landfills is 30 years. During the PCC period, the landfill operator/owner is required to conduct monitoring for leachate, landfill gas, and ground-water and maintain the integrity of the cap so that the landfill does not impose a threat to surrounding human health and environment (HH&E). The duration of PCC can be reduced by the director …

A Kinetics Study Of Selected Filtration Media For Nutrient Removal At Various Temperatures, Elizabeth Henderson Jan 2008

A Kinetics Study Of Selected Filtration Media For Nutrient Removal At Various Temperatures, Elizabeth Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years the nutrient levels of the Upper Floridan aquifer have been increasing (USGS, 2008). An example of this is found in Ocala, Florida where Silver Springs nitrate concentrations have risen from 0.5 mg/L in the 1960 s to approximately 1.0 mg/L in 2003 (Phelps, 2004). Because stormwater is a contributor to surficial and groundwater aquifer recharge, there is an increasing need for methods that decrease nitrogen and phosphorus levels. A laboratory column study was conducted to simulate a retention pond with saturated soil conditions. The objectives of the column studies reported in this thesis were to investigate the …

Blackwater And The Privatization Of Immigration Control, Robert Koulish Jan 2008

Blackwater And The Privatization Of Immigration Control, Robert Koulish

St. Thomas Law Review

In this article, I examine the significance of Blackwater's move to the border and its recent post 9/11 involvement in immigration control. I argue that Blackwater is symbolic of a much larger immigration industrial complex, privatizing decades of border militarization and low intensity conflict that, as author Tim Dunn has documented, has been waged against border crossers and residents since the 1970s. I also argue that Blackwater is part of a post-9/11 neo-liberal regime that is designed to re-territorialize and privatize the war on terror on the domestic front. Finally, I contend that the immigration industrial complex, with Blackwater quickly …

Pareto Negativity: The Enemy Of My Enemy Is Not Necessarily My Friend - Latin Leadership, Coalition Building, And Predatory Globalization, Becky L. Jacobs

St. Thomas Law Review

This Essay is based on my presentation at the LatCrit VII conference, which was part of a panel discussion on Coalition Building, Globally and Locally. The purpose of the presentation and of this Essay is to reflect upon the significant role of Latin civil society organizations ("CSOs"), not only in that region's political, social and economic development of other regions, but also in the historical trajectory of the U.S. As I prepared my remarks and noted the achievements of Latin CSOs, I began to question why there are so few Latino and Latina leaders in transnational CSOs and in the …

Drastic Action: The 1983 Course Boycott At Harvard Law School, Brando Simeo Starkey

St. Thomas Law Review

Progress often comes slower than most want. No one knows this better than black Americans. After slavery, it took another century for blacks to finally receive equal treatment under the law with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But after the big hopes following the Civil Rights Movement, the lack of progress hurt all the more. Most blacks assumed that with the dismantling of Jim Crow, equality would surely follow. This, however, was not the case. By the 1980s, few blacks still reached the pinnacle of success. The black students at Harvard were …

Animal Ethics And The Law, Bernard Rollin Jan 2008

Animal Ethics And The Law, Bernard Rollin

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

Everyone reading this Article is doubtless aware of the woeful lack of legal protection for farm animals in the United States. Not only do the laws fail to assure even a minimally decent life for the majority of these animals, they do not provide protection against the most egregious treatment. As both a philosopher who has helped articulate new emerging societal ethics for animals, and as one who has successfully developed laws embodying that ethic—notably the 1985 federal laws protecting laboratory animals—I will stress the direction we need to move in the future to enfranchise farm animals. I have seen …
