Crochet Lace As Expression Of Digital Culture, Gail Kenning Jan 2008

Crochet Lace As Expression Of Digital Culture, Gail Kenning

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Human designed, physical textile patterns such as lace are familiar in our everyday lives and the historical, geographic and cultural significance of these patterns, and their aesthetic and/or mathematical characteristics, have been extensively investigated and documented. However, their evolutionary potential remains under-theorized. While the digital environment is increasingly used as a design aid in the production of textiles, its potential for exploring the evolutionary possibilities for lace has not been fully investigated. This paper discusses an experimental research art project that explored the evolutionary potential for lace patterns within the digital environment.

Human designed, hand-made domestically produced physical textile patterns …

Kākahu As Cultural Identity, Christina Hurihia Wirihana

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

As Maori, we recognise ourselves as Tangatawhenua, literally meaning people of the land. We acknowledge our Earth Mother, Papatuanuku and Sky Father, Ranginui as the kaitiaki, guardians of our natural world. The natural fibres of Harakeke, commonly known as NZ Flax, was the most extensively used fibres in the production of traditional clothing, fishing nets, lashing, baskets and other functional forms that contributed to the survival of my people. The medicinal values of Harakeke also played a major role. The process of extracting the fibres (muka) from Harakeke continues today as it did many many years ago. The humble kuku, …

Traditional Textile Materials Of Baekje Kingdom, Mi Young Suh, Kil Soon Park

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This analysis includes the kinds, colors, and patterns of textile materials, and shows Baekje attained a high level of weaving culture. Baekje was one of three kingdoms of ancient Korea (B.C.18-A.D.660). The territory of Baekje (Fig. 1) was included current Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheongnambuk-do and Jeollanambuk-do during the fourth century. Also, Baekje influenced Japan many things about textiles including weaving technique. The study analyzed the documentary records of Baekje, such as literature, historical works, excavation reports, and preceding studies.

The kinds of the textile materials of Mahan, pre-country of Baekje, and Baekje were obtained from historical documentations. The textile materials …

Crochet Lace As Expression Of Digital Culture, Gail Kenning

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Introduction

Human designed physical patterns, while having been investigated extensively in terms of their historical, geographic and cultural significance and their aesthetic and/or mathematical characteristics, have not been fully investigated in terms of their evolutionary potential. This paper discusses an experimental art research project which focuses on human designed, physical textile patterns to explore pattern as process and investigate the potential for these patterns to evolve and become emergent.

The experimental art projects focused on lace and in particular, crochet lace pattern forms commonly referred to as doilies.1 Crochet lace patterns are widely recognized, domestically produced hand-made physical patterns …

Claudy Jongstra: Transmitting Craft Heritage Through Contemporary Architecture, Susan Brown Jan 2008

Claudy Jongstra: Transmitting Craft Heritage Through Contemporary Architecture, Susan Brown

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Felt has a unique history as both a craft medium and an industrial material. Recently, it has become a material of intense interest to architects and designers. Felt is a very ancient and primitive material, made by simply matting together wool fibers with moisture and friction. It is a manufactured product, yet it shares many properties with purely natural materials. As a raw material for design, felt has incredible range — it can be made thin and translucent, or very dense and thick, even hard. Its plasticity is inviting a shift in the relationship of textiles to architecture and design. …

Translation Of Medium: Kesi Meets Painting, Jean Kares Jan 2008

Translation Of Medium: Kesi Meets Painting, Jean Kares

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

My current project places kesi, or pictorial silk tapestry, in closer proximity to the discourse of Chinese art history, and raises questions about the hierarchical categorization of creative production. Kesi was produced in China beginning in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127 CE) as a method of weaving that allowed for designs that were independent of loom controlled patterning. When the weavers employed in imperial workshops adopted the medium, they expanded its design repertoire from overall patterning to a means of creating pictures. Indeed, a kesi artwork functioned as a painting, both visually and in its role as an art …

Representation And Self-Presentation In Late Antique Egypt: ‘Coptic’ Textiles In The British Museum, Elisabeth R. O'Connell Jan 2008

Representation And Self-Presentation In Late Antique Egypt: ‘Coptic’ Textiles In The British Museum, Elisabeth R. O'Connell

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Among late antique textiles in the British Museum Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan (hereafter, AES), nearly half (c. 135) are said to have come from the Upper Egyptian town of Akhmim. If the attribution to the site is correct, the textiles provide the Museum with an excellent opportunity to discuss the transformation of Egypt in Late Antiquity through the lens of death and burial.

The late antique site is well represented in Greek and Coptic literature and by the material culture of the city and its cemeteries. The modern name Akhmim holds a vestige of the name Min, the …

Mixed-Fire Regime Of The Klamath-Siskiyou: New Postfire Potentials, Marjie Brown Jan 2008

Mixed-Fire Regime Of The Klamath-Siskiyou: New Postfire Potentials, Marjie Brown

Joint Fire Science Program Briefs (2007-2012)

Effects of postfire management are becoming more important as wildfire frequency, extent and severity appear to be increasing. Researchers set out to measure the effects of postfire salvage logging on fuel loads, vegetation, and wildlife communities in the Klamath-Siskiyou region of the Pacific Northwest. Natural recovery processes revealed some important findings that provide viable options for managers whose objectives include regenerating forests, sustaining natural processes, and maintaining landscape biodiversity. The researchers found that the mixed-severity fire regime of the region, which includes patches of repeated severe fire, supports abundant, natural postfire conifer regeneration and regionally significant biodiversity. Salvage logging aimed …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Numerous species of mammals are susceptible to Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (TB). Several wildlife hosts have emerged as reservoirs of M. bovis infection for domestic livestock in different countries. In the present study, blood samples were collected from Eurasian badgers (n = 1532), white-tailed deer (n = 463), brushtail possums (n = 129), and wild boar (n = 177) for evaluation of antibody responses to M. bovis infection by a lateral-flow rapid test (RT) and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA). Magnitude of the antibody responses and antigen recognition patterns varied among the animals as determined by …

Climate Change Justice, Eric A. Posner, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions would cost some nations much more than others and benefit some nations far less than others. Significant reductions would likely impose especially large costs on the United States, and recent projections suggest that the United States is not among the nations most at risk from climate change. In these circumstances, what does justice require the United States to do? Many people believe that the United States is required to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions beyond the point that is justified by its own self-interest, simply because the United States is wealthy, and because the nations …

To Make A Difference: Dean As Producer, Jon M. Garon Jan 2008

To Make A Difference: Dean As Producer, Jon M. Garon

Faculty Scholarship

As I look at my fifth year as Dean of Hamline University School of Law, I am often struck by the dissonance between my professional life, as a lawyer and law professor, and my administrative life, as a dean within a small university. In both roles, I remain driven to make a difference for the individuals I serve and the broader community in which we live. But these roles have never sat comfortably, one with the other. I am a product of my unique practice and academic experience. An entertainment lawyer by disposition, my field includes a broad array of …
