Modes Of Procedural Reform, Richard L. Marcus Jan 2008

Modes Of Procedural Reform, Richard L. Marcus

UC Law SF International Law Review

Procedural reform seems to be a constant concern in most countries, but there are different modes of accomplishing it. One is to empower judges to develop their own rules of procedure. Another is to have a legislative body do so. A third is to borrow procedural regimes from another nation. And a final mode would be to leave procedural reform to a band of "experts" who can devise the preferred solutions to procedural problems. This paper provides an initial examination into whether the mode of procedural reform used influences the nature or aggressiveness of the reforms themselves. Drawing mainly from …

“Diesmal Fehlt Die Biologie!” Max Horkheimer, Richard Thurnwald, And The Biological Prehistory Of German Sozialforschung, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D. Jan 2008

“Diesmal Fehlt Die Biologie!” Max Horkheimer, Richard Thurnwald, And The Biological Prehistory Of German Sozialforschung, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

In his early writings Max Horkheimer explored the issues surrounding biological explanation in Kantian and neo-Kantian philosophy. After he became director of the Institut für Sozialforschung in 1930, he continued to explore the relationships between biology, materialism, philosophy, and social theory. This interest was reflected both in his editorial policy for the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung and in his own scholarly development that led to the development of critical theory in the later 1930s and the anti-Semitism research of the 1940s. Horkheimer's interests and ambitions also generated resistance from other social scientists. The Berlin ethnologist Richard Thurnwald, along with his student …

Effects Of Concentrate Level And Pen Configuration On Performance Of Boer Crossbred Goat Kids, M. E. Corrigan, J. S. Drouillard, E. R. Loe, B. E. Depenbusch, M. J. Quinn Jan 2008

Effects Of Concentrate Level And Pen Configuration On Performance Of Boer Crossbred Goat Kids, M. E. Corrigan, J. S. Drouillard, E. R. Loe, B. E. Depenbusch, M. J. Quinn

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

One hundred eighty-one Boer-sired goat kids from dams of predominantly Spanish breeding (17.6 ± 2.34 kg initial BW; 177 wethers, 4 doelings) were used to determine optimum inclusion level of concentrate in diets fed to goats in confinement. Effects of elevated loafing areas on performance were also examined. Goats were blocked by weight (2 blocks per treatment) and randomly assigned to 1 of 12 outdoor pens (4.3 m2; 15 to 16 head/pen) with concrete floors. Pens of goats were randomly assigned, within block, to 1 of 6 treatments. A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was used with factors consisting of …

Evaluation Of Dry Distillers Grains Plus Solubles Inclusion On Performance And Economics Of Finishing Beef Steers, C. D. Buckner, T. L. Mader, G. E. Erickson, S. L. Colgan, D. R. Mark, V. R. Bremer, K. K. Karges, M. L. Gibson Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Dry Distillers Grains Plus Solubles Inclusion On Performance And Economics Of Finishing Beef Steers, C. D. Buckner, T. L. Mader, G. E. Erickson, S. L. Colgan, D. R. Mark, V. R. Bremer, K. K. Karges, M. L. Gibson

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

A 167-d feedlot study was conducted to evaluate feeding increasing levels of dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) to finishing cattle and the impact on performance and profitability. Crossbred steer calves (n = 240, BW = 306 ± 24.5 kg) were used in 30 pens with dietary treatments of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% DDGS dietary inclusion (DM basis). Quadratic relationships (P < 0.05) were observed for final BW and ADG as dietary DDGS increased, with the greatest ADG observed at 20% inclusion. The DMI was not affected (P > 0.15) by DDGS level, but G:F tended to be quadratic (P = 0.10) as 20% DM inclusion had the greatest value, although steers fed all levels of DDGS had numerically greater G:F compared with steers fed no …

Case Study: Nutrient Values Of Spring And Summer Annual Forages In A Single Cut Harvest1, B. A. Weichenthal, D. D. Baltensperger, K. P. Vogel, S. D. Masterson, J. M. Krall

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

The Central High Plains of the United States (western Nebraska and Kansas and eastern Wyoming and Colorado) is a major beef cattle production area, but it is subject to periodic droughts. Annual forages are an essential feed source for maintaining beef cattle herds during periods of drought and winter months. The objective of this study was to determine nutrient concentrations in annual forages, including barley, oats, triticale, forage sorghums, sudangrass, pearl millet, foxtail millet, field peas, soybeans, and vetch grown for hay in this region. The summer annuals—forage sorghums, sudangrass, pearl millet, and foxtail millet—were grown in replicated rain-fed and …

Why Divide By (N-1) For Sample Standard Deviation?, Paul Savory Jan 2008

Why Divide By (N-1) For Sample Standard Deviation?, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials

In statistics, the sample standard deviation is a widely used measure of the variability or dispersion of a data set. The standard deviation of a data set is the square root of its variance. In calculating the sample standard deviation, the divisor is the number of samples in the data set minus one (n-1) rather than n. This often confuses students. This paper offers a quick overview of why the divisor is (n-1) for calculating the sample standard deviation.

Treatment Of Hemophilia With Human Factorix Produced In Mamimary Tissue Of Transgenic Mammals, William H. Velander, William N. Drohan, Henryk Lubon, John L. Johnson, Mary Ann H. Johnson

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Recombinant Factor IX characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic animals that incorporate chimeric DNA molecules according to the present invention. Transgenic animals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes Factor IX, such that the foreign DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature animal. Particularly efficient expression was accomplished using a chimeric construct comprising a mammary gland specific promoter, Factor IX cDNA that lacked the complete or any portion of the 5'-untranslated and 3'-un-translated region, which is …

Literacy And Science Connections In The Classroom, Donna M. Plummer, Wilma Kuhlman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Educators in many disciplines recognize interdisciplinary teaching as effective for student learning. This article provides a model for developing an interdisciplinary literacy and science study with states of water as the core scientific study with corresponding literacy strategies. Authors have included suggestions for children’s literature as well as science experiences to use with this study. This water model provides teachers a base for developing studies that integrate their literacy and science curricula.

The Campaign To Arrest Ed Shann’S Influence In Western Australia, Gregory C G Moore Jan 2008

The Campaign To Arrest Ed Shann’S Influence In Western Australia, Gregory C G Moore

Business Conference Papers

Shann towered over the discipline of economics in the state of Western Australia in the first third of the twentieth century. He was the foundation professor in history and economics from 1913 to 1931 and inaugural professor of economics from 1931 to 1934 at the University of Western Australia (UWA); he set the curriculum for the subjects that constituted the economics major that was offered at UWA over this period and ensured that it had a market-driven, policy-oriented and historical flavour; he trained a generation of bright young men and women—such as John La Nauze, Nugget Coombs, Merab Harris, Paul …
