United States Air Force: Publications

A 3-D, kinematic, solar wind model (Hakamada-Akasofu-Fry version 2 (HAFv.2)) is used to predict interplanetary shock arrivals at Venus, Earth, and Mars during a sequence of significant solar events that occurred in the interval 5–14 December 2006. Mars and Venus were on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth during this period. The shocks from the first two east limb events (5 and 6 December) were predicted to interact to form a single disturbance before reaching Earth and Venus. A single shock was indeed recorded at Earth only about 3 h earlier than had been predicted. The composite shock …

Restricting Access To Books On The Internet: Some Unanticipated Effects Of Us Copyright Legislation, Paul A. David, Jared Rubin Jan 2008

Restricting Access To Books On The Internet: Some Unanticipated Effects Of Us Copyright Legislation, Paul A. David, Jared Rubin

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

It is today a commonplace observation that the technical possibilities of accessing enormous global resources of cultural and scientific information have been and are continuing to be greatly [...] One manifestation of the trend towards the strengthening of copyright protection that has been noticeable during the past two decades is the secular extension of the potential duration during which access to copyrightable materials remains legally restricted. Those restrictions carry clear implications for the current and prospective costs to readers seeking 'on-line' availability of the affected content in digital form, via the Internet. This paper undertakes to quantify one aspect of …

Latinas/Os' And The Politics Of Knowledge Production: Latcrit Scholarship And Academic Activism As Social Justice Action, Margaret E. Montoya, Francisco Valdes Jan 2008

Latinas/Os' And The Politics Of Knowledge Production: Latcrit Scholarship And Academic Activism As Social Justice Action, Margaret E. Montoya, Francisco Valdes

Faculty Scholarship

In this article, Professors Montoya and Valdes examine various ways of developing Latina/o legal studies in the United States. As background, they first outline and examine the three main models of knowledge-production established within legal academia during the past century or so: 1) the traditional or imperial model; 2) the safe-space or vanguard model, and; 3) the big-tent or democratic model. Using this historical template to contextualize current efforts in Latina/o legal studies both substantively and methodologically, they next review the record of LatCrit theorists over the past dozen years. With this analytical framework in place, they situate the LatCrit …

Street Outreach Workers: Best Practices And Lessons Learned, Scott H. Decker, Tim S. Bynum, Jack Mcdevitt, Amy Farrell, Sean P. Varano

Justice Studies Faculty Publications

Street outreach workers are an important part of the Senator Charles E. Shannon Jr. Community Safety Initiative (CSI) comprehensive gang and youth violence reduction strategy in Massachusetts1. Street outreach involves the use of individuals to “work the streets,” making contact with youth in neighborhoods with high levels of gang activity. These individuals are generally not employed by the criminal justice system agencies but rather are based in community service organizations or other non- governmental agencies. Street outreach workers provide an important bridge between the community, gang-involved youth, and the agencies (whether social service or law enforcement) that respond to the …

Measuring Knowledge Of Natural Selection: A Comparison Of The C.I.N.S., An Open-Response Instrument, And An Oral Interview, Ross Nehm, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Growing recognition of the central importance of fostering an in-depth understanding of natural selection has, surprisingly, failed to stimulate work on the development and rigorous evaluation of instruments that measure knowledge of it. We used three different methodological tools, the Conceptual Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS), a modified version of Bishop and Anderson's (Bishop and Anderson [1990] Journal of Research in Science Teaching 27: 415-427) open-response test that we call the Open Response Instrument (ORI), and an oral interview derived from both instruments, to measure biology majors' understanding of and alternative conceptions about natural selection. We explored how these instruments …

Tintoretto And James: Exposing The Shattered Subject, Phyllis E. Vanslyck Jan 2008

Tintoretto And James: Exposing The Shattered Subject, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Publications and Research

Though “influence” may be too strong a word, the compositional affinities between James and Tintoretto are pervasive and worthy of comparative analysis, especially because both artists capture the moment when wonder gives way to the lonely and final uncertainty of our knowledge—of self, of others, of secular or spiritual truth.

Separated by three centuries, these two artists both stage a forceful assault on the conventions of their medium and engender in the viewer or reader (as well as internal “perceivers”) a kind of vertigo—a visual and psychological dislocation that is the basis of a new kind of insight. In Tintoretto, …

Looking Twice At Illustrated Books, Barbara A. Ward, Terrell A. Young

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Illustrations often lure would-be readers into books. Illustrations in today’s books do more than just provide a visual accompaniment to text. They can also establish setting, define and develop characters, provide differing viewpoints, extend or develop the plot, establish mood, and provide interesting asides (Tunnell & Jacobs, 2008). While it has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, illustrations have the power to engage the reader and support the text. Today’s books offer a wide range of illustrated formats guaranteed to attract readers with their sumptuous colors and painstaking details.

User-Generated Descriptions Of Individual Images Versus Labels Of Groups 3 Of Images: A Comparison Using Basic Level Theory, Abebe Rorissa Jan 2008

User-Generated Descriptions Of Individual Images Versus Labels Of Groups 3 Of Images: A Comparison Using Basic Level Theory, Abebe Rorissa

Information Science Faculty Scholarship

Although images are visual information sources with little or no text associated with them, users still tend to use text to describe images and formulate queries. This is because digital libraries and search engines provide mostly text query options and rely on text annotations for representation and retrieval of the semantic content of images. While the main focus of image research is on indexing and retrieval of individual images, the general topic of image browsing and indexing, and retrieval of groups of images has not been adequately investigated. Comparisons of descriptions of individual images as well as labels of groups …

Entrepreneurship: Venture Initiation, Management, And Development, George S. Vozikis, Timothy Mescon, Howard Feldman

KSU Press Legacy Project

Twenty years ago, Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. hired over seventy percent of college graduates. Today, Fortune 500 companies hire less than seven percent of college graduates and the entrepreneurial enterprises hire over 80 percent. More than forty percent of students start a business within one year of graduation. These businesses employ 55% of the total American work force. When we think of the entrepreneur, we often visualize the small business. While most, if not all, business ideas begin "small," a great deal of focus in placed upon entrepreneurial ideas that have grown into sizable corporations. In examining the …

Exploring Effective Methods To Build Literacy, Critical Thinking Skills, And Confidence In Middle School Science Classrooms, Jennifer W. Butler Jan 2008

Exploring Effective Methods To Build Literacy, Critical Thinking Skills, And Confidence In Middle School Science Classrooms, Jennifer W. Butler

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

In most science classrooms, one of the most challenging aspects of teaching science is getting students to understand and apply scientific concepts. Most students have simple, generalized knowledge of the concepts, but they lack in the ability to articulate their knowledge and to comprehend questions that use scientific terminology. As a result, many of these students do poorly on standardized tests. The objective of this study was to increase middle school students' skills in reading, comprehension, and oratory articulation in science by implementing the following literacy strategies: Read-Alouds, graphic organizers, K-W-L (Know, Want to know, and Learned)charts, and writing to …

The Relationship Between Reading Comprehension Skills And Self-Concept During Preadolescence, Linda Hathaway Jan 2008

The Relationship Between Reading Comprehension Skills And Self-Concept During Preadolescence, Linda Hathaway

Honors Capstones

This paper is about the relationship between reading comprehension skills and levels of self concept during preadolescence. I refer to Vgotsky's sociocultural theory to establish a preliminary connection and delve further into defining the differences between self-concept, self esteem and self-efficacy. I talk about students' views of their own cognitive abilities, contributing factors to positive self-concept and how some struggling students cope in the classroom. Next is provided a short descriptive list of skills all students should utilize in their academic learning. Finally, I add suggested ideas from author Cris Tovani to provide students with the necessary skills needed for …

Runoff Using A Combined Geographic Information System And Curve Number Approach, Keshia M. Koehn Jan 2008

Runoff Using A Combined Geographic Information System And Curve Number Approach, Keshia M. Koehn

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Stormwater runoff can transport nutrients, sediments, chemicals, and pathogens to surface water bodies. Managing runoff is crucial to preserving water quality in rapidly developing urban watersheds like Northwest Arkansas. A watershed containing much of the University of Arkansas campus was identified as the target area for this study because stormwater from this location drains into the West Fork of the White River, designated as an impaired water body due to siltation. The project objective was to develop a methodology to test existing stormwater drainage infrastructure, identify potential areas of improvement, and estimate potentially contaminated runoff by combining two widely used …
