What Is A Humane Wildlife Control Service?, John Griffin, Lori Thiele, Pamela Lough, Janet Snyder, Maggie Brasted, John Hadidian

Wildlife Population Management Collection

In May 2007, The Humane Society of the United States launched a for-fee business called Humane Wildlife Servicessm to engage in wildlife control jobs in the Washington, D.C. metro area. We had several purposes in launching this service. First, we felt it necessary to offer a service to customers in our home base area that allowed them to choose a wildlife removal company that did not trap and relocate, or trap and kill, animals. Second, we wished to directly experience and test the operational and conceptual challenges associated with this sort of service. Third, we wished to develop a model …

Intrepidity . . . And Character Development Within The Army Profession, Don M. Snider Dr. Jan 2008

Intrepidity . . . And Character Development Within The Army Profession, Don M. Snider Dr.

Articles & Editorials

How many Army soldiers, particularly Leaders, who just read the title of this opinion piece, knew the meaning of the first word; how many brought to their reading an accurate understanding of the term? More importantly, how many Army Leaders could place a true meaning of the word into the context of the Army as a unique profession producing, for the security of the American people, fighting forces for effective land combat? Where does intrepidity fit in what the Army produces and how does the profession develop such a thing?

Growing Epidemic Of Videogame Addiction, Christopher S. Hager Jan 2008

Growing Epidemic Of Videogame Addiction, Christopher S. Hager

Graduate Research Papers

Videogames are rapidly becoming more popular with children and adults alike. Ever since the mid 1980s, videogames have been a major part of pop culture and a widely accepted form of entertainment. With more advances of technology and internet, online gaming has also evolved. Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games such as Everquest and World of Warcraft have become a topic of addiction (msnbc.com, 2008). Some individuals have neglected jobs, families, and personal well-being to continue to play these games, with signs of addiction mimicking substance addiction. The American Psychiatric Association is even considering involving videogame addiction as a compulsive …

A Fossil Skull Of The Extant Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans Lacapède, 1802) From The Late Miocene Of Orange County, California, Harry L. Fierstine Jan 2008

A Fossil Skull Of The Extant Blue Marlin (Makaira Nigricans Lacapède, 1802) From The Late Miocene Of Orange County, California, Harry L. Fierstine

Biological Sciences

A nearly complete fossil skull, including the rostrum, of blue marlin, Makaira nigricans Lacapède, 1802 (Perciformes: Xiphioidei: Istiophoridae), was collected from the Oso Member (latest Miocene) of the Capistrano Formation, Mission Viejo, Orange County, California. The specimen is compared with extant and fossil istiophorids, and 19 of its 20 morphological variables are within the range of values observed for extant M. nigricans, whereas only 13 or less variables are within the observed range of other extant istiophorids. Because extant M. nigricans usually inhabits a water column with a height of about 200 m or more and is the most …

High Latitude Changes In Ice Dynamics And Their Impact On Polar Marine Ecosystems, Mark A. Moline, Nina J. Karnovsky, Zachary Brown, George J. Divoky, Thomas K. Frazer, Charles A. Jacoby, Joseph J. Torres, William R. Fraser Jan 2008

High Latitude Changes In Ice Dynamics And Their Impact On Polar Marine Ecosystems, Mark A. Moline, Nina J. Karnovsky, Zachary Brown, George J. Divoky, Thomas K. Frazer, Charles A. Jacoby, Joseph J. Torres, William R. Fraser

Biological Sciences

Polar regions have experienced significant warming in recent decades. Warming has been most pronounced across the Arctic Ocean Basin and along the Antarctic Peninsula, with significant decreases in the extent and seasonal duration of sea ice. Rapid retreat of glaciers and disintegration of ice sheets have also been documented. The rate of warming is increasing and is predicted to continue well into the current century, with continued impacts on ice dynamics. Climate-mediated changes in ice dynamics are a concern as ice serves as primary habitat for marine organisms central to the food webs of these regions. Changes in the timing …

An Automated Temperature-Based Option For Estimating Surface Activity And Refuge Use Patterns In Free-Ranging Animals, J R. Davis, E N. Taylor, D F. Denardo Jan 2008

An Automated Temperature-Based Option For Estimating Surface Activity And Refuge Use Patterns In Free-Ranging Animals, J R. Davis, E N. Taylor, D F. Denardo

Biological Sciences

Accurately assessing free-ranging animals’ patterns of surface activity and refuge use is critical, yet fundamentally challenging for biologists and wildlife managers. We evaluate the accuracy of an automated technique—temperature-based activity estimation (TBAE)—in estimating surface activity and refuge use patterns of two sympatric reptiles, the western diamond-backed rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) and the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) in the Sonoran Desert. TBAE derived from a comparison of body temperature to shaded air temperature was effective in estimating the overall percent surface activity for both rattlesnakes (observed surface activity 51.8%, TBAE estimated surface activity 48.2%) and Gila monsters (observed …

The Milk Fat Globule Membrane As An Ingredient: Why, How, When?, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Guillaume Brisson

Dairy Science

This paper presents a personal view on the potential applications of the milk fat globule membrane as an ingredient in the processed foods area. Several factors are of importance for this dissertation: the biological origin of the membrane, the voluminous literature on its individual components and their relationship with health and wellness, the biological role of milk in nutrition to mammals and the innovation on scientific tools being applied in many fields of chemistry and biology. We hope to give a glimpse of the reasons on why it is a good idea to use more efficiently the components of the …

A Feminist Reframing Of Bullying And Harassment: Transforming Schools Through Critical Pedagogy, Elizabeth J. Meyer Jan 2008

A Feminist Reframing Of Bullying And Harassment: Transforming Schools Through Critical Pedagogy, Elizabeth J. Meyer

School of Education Scholarship

This article aims to reformulate existing understandings of bullying behaviours in secondary schools, by applying a critical feminist lens to patterns of verbal and psychological harassment among students. Through this understanding, educators may better understand the causes of (hetero)sexist, transphobic, and homophobic behaviours. With a more complex awareness of these power relations, teachers, teacher educators, and educational leadership scholars will be offered critical approaches to help them transform the oppressive cultures of schools.

Gendered Harassment In Secondary Schools: Understanding Teachers’ (Non) Interventions, Elizabeth J. Meyer Jan 2008

Gendered Harassment In Secondary Schools: Understanding Teachers’ (Non) Interventions, Elizabeth J. Meyer

School of Education Scholarship

This article provides an analysis of teachers’ perceptions of and responses to gendered harassment in Canadian secondary schools based on in‐depth interviews with six teachers in one urban school district. Gendered harassment includes any behaviour that polices and reinforces traditional heterosexual gender norms such as (hetero)sexual harassment, homophobic harassment, and harassment for gender non‐conformity. This study shows that educators experience a combination of external and internal influences that act as either barriers or motivators for intervention. Some of the external barriers include: lack of institutional support from administrators; lack of formal education on the issue; inconsistent response from colleagues; fear …

The Phenotypic Plasticity Of Death Valley's Pupfish: Desert Fish Are Revealing How The Environment Alters Development To Modify Body Shape And Behavior, Sean C. Lema Jan 2008

The Phenotypic Plasticity Of Death Valley's Pupfish: Desert Fish Are Revealing How The Environment Alters Development To Modify Body Shape And Behavior, Sean C. Lema

Biological Sciences

Death Valley seems an unlikely spot to go fishing. Nonetheless, seven species of pupfish survive in North America's lowest, hottest spot as remnants from the cooler, damper Pleistocene Epoch. For the most part, these species exist in isolation and have been left to adapt to minute details of their local environment—sort of the fish version of Darwin's finches. Surprisingly, however, even within a species, when environmental variables such as water temperature or food supply vary, morphological changes are evident within a few generations. This phenotypic plasticity calls into question not only environmental management practices for species preservation but also just …

User Driven Two-Dimensional Computer-Generated Ornamentation, Dustin Anderson, Zoë J. Wood Jan 2008

User Driven Two-Dimensional Computer-Generated Ornamentation, Dustin Anderson, Zoë J. Wood

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Hand drawn ornamentation, such as floral or geometric patterns, is a tedious and time consuming task that requires skill and training in ornamental design principles and aesthetics. Ornamental drawings both historically and presently play critical roles in all things from art to architecture, and when computers handle the repetition and overall structure of ornament, considerable savings in time and money can result. Due to the importance of keeping an artist in the loop, we present an application, designed and implemented utilizing a user-driven global planning strategy, to help guide the generation of two-dimensional ornament. The system allows for the creation …

Identifying And Addressing Contemporary Issues In Central Coast Oak Woodlands, Erin Rice, Douglas D. Piirto, Royce Larsen, Bill Tietje, Ryan Cooper, Ulric Lund

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Recently, questions about the extent of thinning, the sustainability of forest management practices, and the compatibility with other uses were raised by the media, agency personnel, and environmental groups. In response, University of California Cooperative Extension and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Natural Resources Management Department collaborated to address these issues. In March 2006, a questionnaire was mailed to landowners of properties greater than 100 acres in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Monterey counties. A total of 2,786 questionnaires were mailed, with 450 completed and returned (16 percent). The respondents were highly educated, holding degrees in areas other than …

Enhancing The Quality Of Vet In Hong Kong: Recent Reforms And New Initiatives In Widening Participation In Tertiary Qualifications, David Lim Jan 2008

Enhancing The Quality Of Vet In Hong Kong: Recent Reforms And New Initiatives In Widening Participation In Tertiary Qualifications, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

As elsewhere, vocational education and training (VET) has a poor image in Hong Kong. To remove the stigma, the Vocational Training Council of Hong Kong embarked on pro‐active strategic planning to make it more relevant and cost‐effective, exposed long and widely held myths that VET is for dullards which leads only to low‐paid and low‐status jobs, provided a through‐train education system to ensure that VET is no longer an educational cul‐de‐sac, and sought external accreditation aggressively. Though it is early days, there is strong evidence that these strategies have worked.

The Fix: Soccer And Organized Crime, Declan Hill Jan 2008

The Fix: Soccer And Organized Crime, Declan Hill

Division of Government and Public Service, Investigations Program Faculty Book Series

The Fix is the most explosive story of sports corruption in a generation. Intriguing, riveting, and compelling, it tells the story of an investigative journalist who sets out to examine the world of match-fixing in professional soccer.

From the Introduction
Understand how gambling fixers work to corrupt a soccer game and you will understand how they move into a basketball league, a cricket tournament, or a tennis match (all places, by the way, that criminal fixers have moved into). My views on soccer have changed. I still love the Saturday-morning game between amateurs: the camaraderie and the fresh smell of …
