The Folk Arts Of Oaxaca: Integrating The Pre-Columbian Roots Of The Traditional Folk Arts Of Oaxaca, Mexico Into The Middle School Art Curriculum, Amanda Archer

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Arts of Oaxaca, Mexico into the Middle School Art Curriculum Multicultural education needs continue to grow, as students must learn about the sociocultural contexts of the modern world. Therefore, educators must find ways to develop competencies in students to be able to function in this environment. These include the ability to think analytically and to relate to the world with an understanding of nonwestern perspectives. Therefore, this researcher designed an art curriculum to serve these purposes, based on the folk arts of Oaxaca, Mexico. Oaxacan folk arts are neither isolated from communal identity, nor the pre-Columbian roots from which they …

Classroom Management Preparation And New Teacher Retention, Michele Deats Jan 2008

Classroom Management Preparation And New Teacher Retention, Michele Deats

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Many factors affect student achievement, however, an effective teacher has been found to be the most influential. A prerequisite of an effective teacher is the ability to manage his or her classroom. However, due to the high rate of attrition of teachers within the first five years of service, coupled with the paucity of the training, and time it takes to learn to effectively manage a classroom, often student achievement suffers. Because authors of many studies have found that new teachers cite student discipline problems and lack of classroom management preparation as major factors for their attrition, this author created …

At-Risk In The Virtual Classroom: A Handbook For Student Success, Scott F. Peth

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Online education, also known as"the virtual classroom", has proliferated in the United States, as well as in much of the world, in the last few years. Indeed, virtual schooling is one of the fastest-growing areas in K-12 education."In its 2005 report, the National Center for Education Statistics found that 36% of all school districts had students participating in virtual courses, for a total of 300,000 students, and this number is projected to explode in the next decade." (Roblyer, 2006, p. 32). Many students who are considered"at-risk" are looking to the virtual classroom as an alternative to the traditional classroom where …

Polystyrene As A Medium In Reverse-Phase Separation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Madhavi Mantha Jan 2008

Polystyrene As A Medium In Reverse-Phase Separation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Madhavi Mantha

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the research was to design a method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) that would separate the sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) designated by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as priority pollutants on two different kinds of polystyrene (PS) in the reversed phase. One was a zirconia-based column coated with polystyrene. The other was a polystyrene divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) column. The idea behind using these columns was to take advantage of extreme retention of PAHs by these columns by using high temperatures or temperature programming in order to reduce the amount of organic modifier in the mobile phases to perform …

A Comparison Between Warm-Water Fish Assemblages Of Narragansett Bay And Those Of Long Island Sound Waters, Abby Jane M. Wood, Jeremy S. Collie, Jonathan A. Hare Jan 2008

A Comparison Between Warm-Water Fish Assemblages Of Narragansett Bay And Those Of Long Island Sound Waters, Abby Jane M. Wood, Jeremy S. Collie, Jonathan A. Hare

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Fish species of warm-water origin appear in northeastern U.S. coastal waters in the late summer and remain until late fall when the temperate waters cool. The annual abundance and species composition of warm-water species is highly variable from year to year, and these variables may have effects on the trophic dynamics of this region. To understand this variability, records of warm-water fish occurrence were examined in two neighboring temperate areas, Narragansett Bay and Long Island Sound. The most abundant fish species were the same in both areas, and regional abundances peaked in both areas in the middle of September, four …

Shaw-Tarantino Connection: Rolling Thunder Pictures And The Exploitation Aesthetics Of Cool, Kenneth Chan Jan 2008

Shaw-Tarantino Connection: Rolling Thunder Pictures And The Exploitation Aesthetics Of Cool, Kenneth Chan

English Faculty Publications

From the Introduction: The opening credit sequence of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 features the Shaw Brothers logo—the letters “SB” encased within a crest symbol not unlike the one used by Warner Bros.—emblazoned across a multicolored frosted-glass backdrop, accompanied by the words “Shaw Scope” and a cheesy trumpet fanfare. For many mainstream American moviegoers, this is probably their first encounter with this iconic symbol from Hong Kong’s cinematic history. But for Hong Kong and diasporic Chinese audiences (in countries such as Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore; and in Chinatowns across North America and Europe), this highly familiar branding sequence …

Understanding the toxicodynamics of wildlife populations in contaminated ecosystems is one of the greatest challenges in ecotoxicology today. The goal is to manage these populations to minimize risk to ecosystem integrity as well as human health. Ecological risk assessments (ERAs) in the United States are designed to meet the regulatory mandates of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, an ERA evaluates the potential adverse effects that human activities have on the ' ora and fauna that de( ne an ecosystem (U.S. Environmental Protection …

From the chapter introduction: Over the past decade and a half, I have worked with many undergraduates as teaching assistants, research assistants on my projects, and advisees who conduct research for honors or other advanced programs. However, in very few cases have I had the special opportunity to genuinely collaborate with a student on research. The materials that follow define collaboration and set it apart from other modes of working with undergraduates, discuss selection processes, goals, challenges, and advantages of collaboration, and provide examples from my work with an outstanding undergraduate student, Joseph Hamm. I conclude this chapter with specific …

Severity Of Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms Depends On Developmental Stage Of Long–Evans Rats, Chun-Shiang Chung, Jian Wang, Monh Wehman, Dennis E. Rhoads Jan 2008

Severity Of Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms Depends On Developmental Stage Of Long–Evans Rats, Chun-Shiang Chung, Jian Wang, Monh Wehman, Dennis E. Rhoads

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

To investigate alcohol dependency and the potential role of age of initial alcohol consumption, Long–Evans (LE) rats were fed an ethanol-containing liquid diet starting at postnatal (P) ages (days): P23–27 (juvenile), P35–45 (adolescent) or P65–97 (young adult). Severity of subsequent withdrawal symptoms was dependent on age when consumption began and on duration of alcohol consumption. Frequency of withdrawal seizures was highest for rats starting consumption as juveniles, intermediate for adolescents and lowest for adults. Normalized to body weight, alcohol consumption was significantly higher for adolescent and juvenile rats than for adults. Sprague–Dawley rats that began alcohol consumption as adolescents (P35) …

Activation Of Natural Regulatory T Cells By Igg Fc-Derived Peptide "Tregitopes", Anne S. De Groot, Leonard Moise, Julie A. Mcmurry, Erik Wambre, Laurence Van Overtvelt, Philippe Moingeon, David W. Scott, William Martin

Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications

We have identified at least 2 highly promiscuous major histocompatibility complex class II T-cell epitopes in the Fc fragment of IgG that are capable of specifically activating CD4+CD25HiFoxP3+ natural regulatory T cells (nTRegs). Coincubation of these regulatory T-cell epitopes or “Tregitopes” and antigens with peripheral blood mononuclear cells led to a suppression of effector cytokine secretion, reduced proliferation of effector T cells, and caused an increase in cell surface markers associated with TRegs such as FoxP3. In vivo administration of the murine homologue of the Fc region Tregitope resulted in suppression of …

The Identifiability Of Bias In Environmental Law, Shi-Ling Hsu Jan 2008

The Identifiability Of Bias In Environmental Law, Shi-Ling Hsu

Scholarly Publications

The identifiability effect is the human propensity to have stronger emotions regarding identifiable individuals or groups than for abstract ones. The more information that is available about a person, the more likely this person’s situation will influence human decisionmaking. This human propensity has biased law and public policy against environmental and ecological protection because the putative economic victims of environmental regulation are usually easily identifiable workers that lose their jobs, while the beneficiaries—people who avoid a premature death from air or water pollution, people who would be saved by medicinal compounds available only in rare plant and animal species, and …

Where Spirit And Bulldozer Roam: Environment And Anxiety In Highland Borneo, Matthew H. Amster Jan 2008

Where Spirit And Bulldozer Roam: Environment And Anxiety In Highland Borneo, Matthew H. Amster

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper explores changing perceptions of the natural environment among the Kelabit, an indigenous people of the Borneo interior. It considers both traditional and post-Christian conversion understandings about forest spaces. The former animistic ritual practices of the Kelabit centered on a spiritual dialogue with the natural world and this dialogue was often marked by active efforts to avoid or mitigate danger through ritual practice. One key example presented here is the former ceremony of 'calling the eagle' (nawar keniu), a ritual employed in times of crisis that exemplifies the dialogical and entwined relationship Kelabit had to the natural world. Such …
