Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: We initiated differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) into dopamine neurons, obtained a purified population of neuronal precursor cells by cell sorting, and determined patterns of gene transcription.
METHODOLOGY: Dopaminergic differentiation of hESCs was initiated by culturing hESCs with a feeder layer of PA6 cells. Differentiating cells were then sorted to obtain a pure population of PSA-NCAM-expressing neuronal precursors, which were then analyzed for gene expression using Massive Parallel Signature Sequencing (MPSS). Individual genes as well as regions of the genome which were activated were determined.
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A number of genes known to be involved in the …

Whole raw soybeans (SB), wet corn gluten feed (WCGF), and corn dried distillers grains (DDG) are sources of protein in heifer development rations. The objectives of this study were to compare puberty status before synchronization of estrus, response to synchronization, and AI and final pregnancy rates in heifers developed on diets containing SB, WCGF, or DDG that were formulated to be similar in energy and CP. These ingredients vary substantially in fat content, which may affect reproductive performance. Rate of gain during the feeding period and post-AI performance were also compared. In a preliminary experiment, 104 crossbred heifers were fed …

Implementing An Authentic Research Project On Eastern Coyotes At An Urban High School, Jonathan G. Way, David Eatough
Implementing An Authentic Research Project On Eastern Coyotes At An Urban High School, Jonathan G. Way, David Eatough
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The need for inquiry oriented authentic activities is imperative to engage high school students in the active involvement and associated learning of science. Herein, we describe our experience of involving high school students in the process of studying wild coyotes in and around the communities where they live. We found that many became aware and familiar with the program but few participated to the point of being contributing members of the scientific community. To make this project sustainable in the long-run three important things must happen: one, there must be reliable point person (such as a graduate student) who can …

Urban Growth, Community, And The Environment: An Experiential Pedagogy, Mark T. Mulder, Don Degraaf
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Some scholars have described urban sprawl as America's most pressing environmental issue. As educators we are acutely interested in unearthing new methods for engaging students in these types of topics. In this paper we describe a unique interdisciplinary and experiential course that we have designed to introduce students of various academic programs to the attendant issues of urban sprawl.

Multi-Ideal-Adic Completions Of Noetherian Rings, William J. Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand
Multi-Ideal-Adic Completions Of Noetherian Rings, William J. Heinzer, Christel Rotthaus, Sylvia Wiegand
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Let R be a commutative ring with identity. A filtration on R is a decreasing sequence {In}∞ n=0 of ideals of R. Associated to a filtration is a well-defined completion R ∗ = l←i−mn R/In and a canonical homomorphism ψ : R → R ∗ [13, Chap. 9]. If ∞ n=0 In = (0), then ψ is injective and R may be regarded as a subring of R ∗ [13, p. 401]. In the terminology of Northcott, a filtration {In}∞ n=0 is multiplicative if I0 = R and InIm ⊆ In+m for all m ≥ 0 and n ≥ 0 …

Combined Interviews
Ms. Ortiz talks about her family and what her life was like growing up; as a young woman she began dating Manuel Ortiz Orozco, whom she knew from the ranch where they were both raised; in 1955, he enlisted in the bracero program; she was happy that he joined, because it was of great help, especially given that the harvests were so undependable; they often wrote love letters to each other; when he and other men were gone their fields were abandoned, and the women and children did the best they could; after he returned from his first contract, they …
Appetites And Actions In Aristotle's Moral Psychology, Tom Olshewsky
Appetites And Actions In Aristotle's Moral Psychology, Tom Olshewsky
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
The so-called practical syllogism is best understood in dispositional terms. Animate movement originates with orexis (appetite), but appetite is the result of the coming together of dual dispositions, the orektikon and the orekton. For calculative appetite, multiple objectives can be imagined, and deliberation determines which objective is best for this person in this circumstance. Deliberation is an antecedent of the actualized appetite, not its consequence. This psychology makes clear that satisfaction of appetites is a two-stage process for calculative beings: first the determination of the appetite, then movement to fulfillment in its objective. In deliberation, the determination is which …
Persuasion And Force In Plato's Republic, Christopher Moore
Persuasion And Force In Plato's Republic, Christopher Moore
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
Despite the frequent pairing of and contrast between persuasion and force, Plato’s Republic undermines any coherent split between these two modes of handling others. This paper provides two major pieces of evidence to support this claim: (i) Book I dramatizes the weakness of the distinction; and (ii) the arguments that the best rulers will rule only under coercion (in Books I, V, VII, and IX) makes the distinction into an obvious conundrum. Further evidence omitted here is Plato’s tendency to subvert this same rhetorically popular binary elsewhere, especially Statesman, Sophist and Laws. Given that Plato doesn’t explicitly question the persuasion-force …

Breaking The Ice: Emerging Legal Issues In Arctic Sovereignty, Stephanie Holmes
Breaking The Ice: Emerging Legal Issues In Arctic Sovereignty, Stephanie Holmes
Chicago Journal of International Law
Section I provides background information on Arctic geography and traces the development of early maritime law and the freedom-of-the-seas doctrine. It goes on to discuss President Truman's 1945 Proclamation on the Continental Shelf and the international community's response prior to implementation of UNCLOS. Section II gives an overview of the important and relevant provisions of UNCLOS, including sovereignty limits, navigation provisions, regulations of the deep seabed, and methods of dispute resolution. Section III applies UNCLOS to the two current continental shelf disputes in the Arctic and argues that UNCLOS is inadequate to resolve these disputes and any others that might …
Safeguarding The Rights Of Sexual Minorities: The Incremental And Legal Approaches To Enforcing International Human Rights Obligations, Emma Mittelstaedt
Safeguarding The Rights Of Sexual Minorities: The Incremental And Legal Approaches To Enforcing International Human Rights Obligations, Emma Mittelstaedt
Chicago Journal of International Law
Section II provides a brief background on the sources of international law used to advocate for and enforce LGBT rights. Section III describes some examples of recent and current legal issues arising out of situations in which nations have decided not to follow their international treaty obligations and examines why these nations might have so chosen. Section III also distinguishes among three different types of situations-laws violating international human rights obligations that predate treaty obligations (III.A), laws predating treaty obligations that are now being reinforced to further violate those obligations (III.B), and laws proposed after treaties have already been signed …

Evaluating Chloroplast Dna In Prehistoric Texas Coprolites: Medicinal, Dietary, Or Ambient Ancient Dna? (Galley Proofs), Karl J. Reinhard, Sérgio M. Chaves, John G. Jones, Alena M. Iñiguez
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Molecular analysis of coprolites from Hinds Cave, Texas recovered chloroplast DNA sequences. The sequences were interpreted as evidence of diet. We analyzed 19 Hinds Cave coprolites to evaluate the potential sources of the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and compared our results to previous studies. This review shows that some cpDNA sequences could be from well-known prehistoric plants foods. Some other sequences could have come from ambient plant material in the guts of small animals eaten by humans in antiquity. Using pollen concentration analysis, we identify sources of ambient plant material which could have been inhaled or imbibed. It is even possible …
Physical And Biological Characteristics Of Billfish Spawning Habitat In The Straits Of Florida, David Earl Richardson
Physical And Biological Characteristics Of Billfish Spawning Habitat In The Straits Of Florida, David Earl Richardson
Open Access Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation was to examine sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) spawning in the Straits of Florida, with a specific focus on 1) the physical and biological characteristics of the spawning environment, and 2) the role of the region within the broader spawning patterns of these two species. In order to accomplish these objectives, two years of monthly ichthyoplankton collections and physical measurements across the Straits of Florida were combined with a finer-scale Lagrangian study. Additionally, a molecular species-identification methodology was developed that was both high-throughput and suitable for use with a broad taxonomic range …

Candidate Amino Acids Involved In H+ Gating Of Acid-Sensing Ion Channel 1a, Martin Paukert, Xuanmao Chen, Georg Polleichtner, Hermann Schindelin, Stefan Grunder
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
Acid-sensing ion channels are ligand-gated cation channels, gated by extracellular H+. H+ is the simplest ligand possible, and whereas for larger ligands that gate ion channels complex binding sites in the three-dimensional structure of the proteins have to be assumed, H+ could in principle gate a channel by titration of a single amino acid. Experimental evidence suggests a more complex situation, however. For example, it has been shown that extracellular Ca2+ ions compete with H+; probably Ca2+ ions bound to the extracellular loop of ASICs stabilize the closed state of the channel and have to be displaced before the channel …

GDP-D-mannose 4,6-dehydratase (GMD) is a key enzyme involved in the synthesis of 6-deoxyhexoses in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus-1 (PBCV-1) encodes a functional GMD, which is unique among characterized GMDs because it also has a strong stereospecific NADPH-dependent reductase activity leading to GDP-D-rhamnose formation (Tonetti, M., Zanardi, D., Gurnon, J., Fruscione, F., Armirotti, A., Damonte, G., Sturla, L., De Flora, A., and Van Etten, J.L. (2003) J. Biol. Chem. 278, 21559–21565). In the present study we characterized a recombinant GMD encoded by another chlorella virus, Acanthocystis turfacea chlorella virus 1 (ATCV-1), demonstrating that it has the expected dehydratase …

Wittgenstein And Worship: Investigations Of Liturgical Language-Games And Their Formative Role In Christian Identity, Michelle Kathleen Weber
Wittgenstein And Worship: Investigations Of Liturgical Language-Games And Their Formative Role In Christian Identity, Michelle Kathleen Weber
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
I argue that the Christian community’s religious language games, particularly liturgical action (theologia prima) and theological reflection (theologia secunda), mutually shape and correct one another. I demonstrate this using Wittgenstein’s philosophical method, adapting his approach to philosophy for theological use. The first part of this essay explains and demonstrates Wittgenstein’s philosophical method. The second part is an application of his method (with my own adaptation of this method for theology) with Christian liturgy as its subject. The third part of this essay discusses ways in which Wittgenstein’s approach might be adapted further in a fruitful way …
