Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention
Kentucky is a FORAGE state with approximately one-half of the total farmland occupied by forage grasses and legumes. We are very fortunate that we can grow many different species successfully. We have the natural resources and climate to grow most cool-season and warm-season species. We are fortunate that we usually have a relatively long growing season. We are usually blessed with rain, especially in spring (2007 was a major exception) with our annual rainfall approximately fifty inches. We are also fortunate that we have some of the absolute best forage-livestock producers in the World.

Dead Reckoning (Book Review), Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
Long before she became the first female president of Harvard University in July 2007, Drew Gilpin Faust showed herself to be an inventive, energetic, and restless historian. Her first book, in 1977, focused on a subject many people had doubted was a subject, "the intellectual in the Old South." Five years later, she produced what is still the fullest — and most disturbing — portrayal of a white Southern planter, a man who sought complete mastery over the white women in his charge as well as over the enslaved people he claimed as property.
Soon after that, in a series …

Federalism, The Rehnquist Court, And The Modern Republican Party, Bradley W. Joondeph
Federalism, The Rehnquist Court, And The Modern Republican Party, Bradley W. Joondeph
Faculty Publications
Most scholars agree that federalism was central to the Rehnquist Court's constitutional agenda. But there is a part of the federalism story that has been largely overlooked: the Court's decisions involving the structural constraints on state governments, the most significant of which are preemption and the dormant Commerce Clause. This article makes two empirical claims about the Rehnquist Court's federalism jurisprudence, one descriptive and one interpretive. The descriptive claim is that that the Court's overall approach to federalism was more complicated than many have assumed, and it was not necessarily friendly to the states. To support this contention, I present …

Hierarchy In The Library: Egalitarian Dynamics In Victorian Novels, John Johnson, Joseph Carroll, Jonathan Gottschall, Daniel Kruger
Hierarchy In The Library: Egalitarian Dynamics In Victorian Novels, John Johnson, Joseph Carroll, Jonathan Gottschall, Daniel Kruger
English Department Faculty Works
The current research investigated the psychological differences between protagonists and antagonists in literature and the impact of these differences on readers. It was hypothesized that protagonists would embody cooperative motives and behaviors that are valued by egalitarian hunter-gatherers groups, whereas antagonists would demonstrate status-seeking and dominance behaviors that are stigmatized in such groups. This hypothesis was tested with an online questionnaire listing characters from 201 canonical British novels of the longer nineteenth century. 519 respondents generated 1470 protocols on 435 characters. Respondents identified the characters as protagonists, antagonists, or minor characters, judged the characters’ motives according to human life history …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Hypercapnia (elevated CO2 levels) occurs as a consequence of poor alveolar ventilation and impairs alveolar fluid reabsorption (AFR) by promoting Na,K-ATPase endocytosis. We studied the mechanisms regulating CO2-induced Na,K-ATPase endocytosis in alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) and alveolar epithelial dysfunction in rats. Elevated CO2 levels caused a rapid activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in AECs, a key regulator of metabolic homeostasis. Activation of AMPK was mediated by a CO2-triggered increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase kinase-β (CaMKK-β). Chelating intracellular Ca2+ or abrogating CaMKK-β function by gene silencing or …
