Cooperative Roles Of Geographic Information Science In Identifying Boundary Uncertainty : A Case Study In The Bureau Of Land Management's Manzano Wilderness Study Area, Kathleen Hawkos Feb 2008

Cooperative Roles Of Geographic Information Science In Identifying Boundary Uncertainty : A Case Study In The Bureau Of Land Management's Manzano Wilderness Study Area, Kathleen Hawkos

Geography ETDs

Advances in the development and accuracy of Geographic Information Science (GIS) in concert with the rapid development of advanced microprocessors and computer software have resulted in widely available survey data. No longer held captive by the discipline of surveying, this data is currently being used by geographers, cartographers, municipal planners and realtors for display and reproduction. Surveying provides the physical and legal basis for boundary delineation while GIS provides the tools to readily yield information from spatial data, and to economically conduct analyses enabling a more comprehensive understanding of boundary issues. A case study in the Bureau of Land Managements …

The Impact Of Animals With Struggling Readers, Jennifer Heyer Feb 2008

The Impact Of Animals With Struggling Readers, Jennifer Heyer

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the impact that dogs have with students that struggle with reading. Several programs have been implemented where students spend time reading books to dogs. During these reading sessions, students tend to be more relaxed and confident with their reading. For this thesis, the researcher collected evidence from six students to assess if reading to a dog assists student's reading achievement. Three students met with the researcher for sixteen weeks and worked on their reading skills. The other three students worked with a dog-reading team. Research was collected by using reading assessments, field …

A Synaptic Basis For Auditory-Vocal Integration In The Songbird, Eric E. Bauer, Melissa J. Coleman, Todd F. Roberts, Arani Roy, Jonathan F. Prather, Richard Mooney

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Songbirds learn to sing by memorizing a tutor song that they then vocally mimic using auditory feedback. This developmental sequence suggests that brain areas that encode auditory memories communicate with brain areas for learned vocal control. In the songbird, the secondary auditory telencephalic region caudal mesopallium (CM) contains neurons that encode aspects of auditory experience. We investigated whether CM is an important source of auditory input to two sensorimotor structures implicated in singing, the telencephalic song nucleus interface (NIf) and HVC. We used reversible inactivation methods to show that activity in CM is necessary for much of the auditory-evoked activity …

High-Affinity Naloxone Binding To Filamin A Prevents Mu Opioid Receptor–Gs Coupling Underlying Opioid Tolerance And Dependence, Hoau-Yan Wang, Maya Frankfurt, Lindsay H. Burns Feb 2008

High-Affinity Naloxone Binding To Filamin A Prevents Mu Opioid Receptor–Gs Coupling Underlying Opioid Tolerance And Dependence, Hoau-Yan Wang, Maya Frankfurt, Lindsay H. Burns

Publications and Research

Ultra-low-dose opioid antagonists enhance opioid analgesia and reduce analgesic tolerance and dependence by preventing a G protein coupling switch (Gi/o to Gs) by the mu opioid receptor (MOR), although the binding site of such ultra-low-dose opioid antagonists was previously unknown. Here we show that with approximately 200-fold higher affinity than for the mu opioid receptor, naloxone binds a pentapeptide segment of the scaffolding protein filamin A, known to interact with the mu opioid receptor, to disrupt its chronic opioid-induced Gs coupling. Naloxone binding to filamin A is demonstrated by the absence of [3H]-and FITC-naloxone binding in the melanoma M2 cell …

Two Good China Stories Where You Don’T Usually Look For China Stories Feb 2008

Two Good China Stories Where You Don’T Usually Look For China Stories

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In the last few days, some good stuff to read about China has appeared in places you might not think to look. First, the Winter, 2008 Dissent has an excellent article by Thomas Pogge (pp. 66-75) called “Growth and Inequality: Understanding Recent Trends and Political Choices.” It’s an admirably clear overview of some of the vagaries of poverty statistics, differing ways of estimating inequality, and the relationship between growth and poverty reduction, tied to a very sensible argument about how somewhat slower growth could actually do much more to reduce poverty (and wreak less havoc on the environment) if it …
