Sex And The Elderly: What Physicians Should Know About Their Older Patients, Jana Colton Feb 2008

Sex And The Elderly: What Physicians Should Know About Their Older Patients, Jana Colton

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study is intended to explore how physicians can best help their older patients attain a better quality of life through sexual healthcare by eliciting older patients perceptions and experiences regarding their sexual health needs and what role their physician should play in meeting those needs. Participants consisted of individuals and couples over the age of 65 recruited from a continuing care retirement community and from a VA Geriatric Clinic. Twenty in-depth, one-on-one interviews were conducted, and transcripts were analyzed using qualitative methodology. Analysis of transcripts revealed a broad range of findings including seniors perceptions of: the definitions of sexual …

Effect Of Thyroid Hormone Concentration On The Transcriptional Response Underlying Induced Metamorphosis In The Mexican Axolotl (Ambystoma), Robert B. Page, Stephen R. Voss, Amy K. Samuels, Jeramiah J. Smith, Srikrishna Putta, Christopher K. Beachy Feb 2008

Effect Of Thyroid Hormone Concentration On The Transcriptional Response Underlying Induced Metamorphosis In The Mexican Axolotl (Ambystoma), Robert B. Page, Stephen R. Voss, Amy K. Samuels, Jeramiah J. Smith, Srikrishna Putta, Christopher K. Beachy

Biology Faculty Publications

Background

Thyroid hormones (TH) induce gene expression programs that orchestrate amphibian metamorphosis. In contrast to anurans, many salamanders do not undergo metamorphosis in nature. However, they can be induced to undergo metamorphosis via exposure to thyroxine (T4). We induced metamorphosis in juvenile Mexican axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) using 5 and 50 nM T4, collected epidermal tissue from the head at four time points (Days 0, 2, 12, 28), and used microarray analysis to quantify mRNA abundances.

Results

Individuals reared in the higher T4 concentration initiated morphological and transcriptional changes earlier and completed metamorphosis by …

Clinical Predictors Of Drug Resistance And Mortality Among Tuberculosis Patients In A Rural South African Hospital: A Case-Control Study, Jason Randolph Andrews Feb 2008

Clinical Predictors Of Drug Resistance And Mortality Among Tuberculosis Patients In A Rural South African Hospital: A Case-Control Study, Jason Randolph Andrews

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The recent discovery of a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) in rural South Africa, where HIV is rampant, has provoked alarms about the future of tuberculosis control in the region. Little is known about the clinical manifestations of MDR-TB in general, and XDR-TB in particular, in the high HIV prevalence settings of Sub-Saharan Africa. We performed a retrospective, case-control study of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis at a rural hospital in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, where large numbers of MDR-TB and XDRTB cases have been identified. All MDR-TB and XDR-TB patients who began treatment for TB …

Mitral Cell Dendritic Development In The Mouse Main Olfactory Bulb, Masha Rand Diede Feb 2008

Mitral Cell Dendritic Development In The Mouse Main Olfactory Bulb, Masha Rand Diede

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Correct targeting and differentiation of the mitral cell (MC) dendrites in the olfactory bulb (OB) is clearly essential for development of functional neuronal circuits. MCs, the primary OB projection neurons, receive odor information from OSN axons via axodendritic synapses on their apical dendrite; the signal is further processed via dendrodendritic synapses on MC lateral dendrites. In the adult, each MC cell apical dendrite targets a single glomerulus, ending in a characteristic glomerular tuft and receiving input from molecularly defined subsets of OSNs. MC lateral dendrites segregate deep to the glomerular layer, in a sublamina of the external plexiform layer. MC …

Effect Of A Parent Reading Intervention On Elementary-Aged Children‘S Reading Fluency, Renee R. Corbett Feb 2008

Effect Of A Parent Reading Intervention On Elementary-Aged Children‘S Reading Fluency, Renee R. Corbett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effect of a parent-implemented reading intervention on children's reading fluency. Five elementary school students identified as at-risk for reading failure participated in the study with their mothers. Baseline data for each student was collected before parents were trained by the researcher in implementation of the intervention procedure. Parents implemented the intervention four times per week for five weeks, while the researcher continued to collect assessment data twice per week. Follow-up data were then collected for each student two weeks after the intervention ended. The effects of the intervention were evaluated using a multiple baseline across participants …

Teaching High School Age Students With Special Needs The Four Situations For Subtraction, K. A. D. Miller, Audrey C. Rule, V. M. Macentee Feb 2008

Teaching High School Age Students With Special Needs The Four Situations For Subtraction, K. A. D. Miller, Audrey C. Rule, V. M. Macentee

Open Educational Resources

All learners, including those who qualify for special education services, should have access to learning mathematical concepts. This study examined the efficacy of using hands-on sets of materials to teach two high school students with mental retardation the four situations for subtraction. This is a mixed methods study using a simple pretest-posttest design to determine correct interpretation of subtraction story problems for different situations (take-away, comparison, completion, and whole-part-part) and correct regrouping during dynamic subtraction. Eight story problems were presented to the two participants eight weeks prior to instruction; students answered an identical posttest after twelve half-hour lessons on subtraction …
