The Worldviews Of Hinduism And The Christian Believer, Will Hedrick
The Worldviews Of Hinduism And The Christian Believer, Will Hedrick
Senior Honors Theses
In this thesis, the Vedanta branch of Hinduism will be studied in order to gain an understanding of this diverse religion. The Vedanta concept of God, the self, the problem of life, the cause of this problem, the solution, and means to reach this solution will be examined in detail. After explaining these concepts, they will be compared with Christianity in order to see what common ground exists. Along with this, apologetic thoughts will be presented so that the Christian can better evangelize the Hindu. Finally, the concepts will be reexamined with the goal of finding truths that may help …

Textile Dyes: Techniques And Their Effects On The Environment With A Recommendation For Dyers Concerning The Green Effect, Charity Goetz
Senior Honors Theses
Abstract This thesis examines different classes of dyes, the processes they require, their use on different textiles, and their potential effects on the environment. Additionally, experiments with natural dyes were conducted and documented. Natural berries, roots, and other dyestuffs were collected and used to dye both natural and synthetic textiles. Through research and experimentation, the different types of dyes and techniques were compared and contrasted. Each type of dye has benefits and disadvantages. Every system of dyeing produces waste along with the finished product. Current government standards regarding textile waste are discussed as well as ways to reduce costs while …

Biological Functions Of The Novel Lysophosphatidic Acid (Lpa) Receptor, Lpa4/P2y9/Gpr23, Peilun Lee
Biological Functions Of The Novel Lysophosphatidic Acid (Lpa) Receptor, Lpa4/P2y9/Gpr23, Peilun Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a naturally occurring phospholipid present in serum and malignant effusions, elicits diverse biological functions through binding and activating specific cell surface G-protein coupled receptors. In addition to the conventional LPA1/Edg2, LPA2/Edg4 and LPA3/Edg7 receptors of the endothelial differentiation gene (Edg) family, LPA4/p2y9/GPR23 of the purinergic receptor family and the related LPA5/GPR92 and LPA6/p2y5 have been identified as novel LPA receptors. These newly identified LPA receptors are structurally distant from the Edg LPA1-3 receptors and couple to Gq, G12/13 and probably Gs subunits. However, the roles of the LPA4-6 receptors in LPA signal transduction and physiology are poorly …

Local Bacteriological Survey: Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteria In Two Lynchburg Parks, Rachel S. Hassenpflug
Local Bacteriological Survey: Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteria In Two Lynchburg Parks, Rachel S. Hassenpflug
Senior Honors Theses
Water samples were collected from the bodies of water at Peaks View Park and Percival’s Isle Park in Lynchburg, Virginia in two separate trials per collection site. The samples were filtered to isolate bacteria present in the water. The filters were placed on Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA) and Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) plates and incubated to obtain colony counts of the bacteria. Subsequently, distinct colonies were selected from the filtration plates and streaked for isolation. Isolates were subjected to a variety of analytical methods and thereby identified by genus and species. Fifteen different species were identified from twenty-three different samples. …

The Influence Of The Brazilian Dictatorship On Brazilian Music: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Protest Songs, Fernanda P. Rezende
The Influence Of The Brazilian Dictatorship On Brazilian Music: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Protest Songs, Fernanda P. Rezende
Senior Honors Theses
In 1964, Brazil suffered a military coup that established a dictatorship in the country until 1985. During this period, the armed forces used unrestrained violence to suppress the opposition, and the government placed a heavy censorship on the media and the arts. Music was a targeted area due to its great influence on society, especially on the youth, and many songwriters and singers were exiled. In order to escape from the censors and still be able to convey a revolutionary message to the people, they had to use different literary devices and create new methods of writing. It was in …

Implementing Mass Nutrient Balance Procedures On Swine Production Facilities, Richard Koelsch, Alan Sutton
Implementing Mass Nutrient Balance Procedures On Swine Production Facilities, Richard Koelsch, Alan Sutton
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Whole Farm Nutrient Balance (WFNB) approaches have been used to provide a measure of environmental performance (Aarts et al., 1992; Lanyon and Beegle, 1993; Klausner, 1995). Whole farm balance concepts are used as part of the Netherlands Mineral Accounting System public policy that includes compulsory mineral input and output reports from livestock farms and levies for excess imbalances (Jongbloed and Lenis, 1998). Procedures for measuring WFNB will be followed in measurements made on commercial swine facilities for 2006 and 2007. The conclusions developed based upon data from 13 for 2006 include:
- On average, the participating swine producers import 1.5 units …

Revisiting Elwyn B. Robinson’S History Of North Dakota: How The State’S History Created A Community, Jennifer Heth
Revisiting Elwyn B. Robinson’S History Of North Dakota: How The State’S History Created A Community, Jennifer Heth
James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities
In his History of North Dakota, Elwyn B. Robinson described six themes of North Dakota’s history: remoteness, dependence, radicalism, a position of economic disadvantage, the Too-Much Mistake, and adjustment. Robinson also concluded that these six themes of the state’s history influenced the state’s people and produced the North Dakota character, which included such traits as pride, stubbornness, and radicalism. Robinson’s scholarship did much to illuminate the complexities and interconnectedness of the state’s history, geography, and society, and his History of North Dakota is considered to be the cornerstone of North Dakota historical discourse. But given changes in approaches and …

Community Of Coercion And Compliance: Scientific Agriculture At Lake Andes, South Dakota, In The 1920s, David Nesheim
James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities
Riding the crest of a wave that peaked in the 1920s, governmental officials in and around Lake Andes, South Dakota, sought to reorder its cultural and physical landscape. Lake Andes, like so many other communities on the Great Plains, straddled two realities, as it fell within the boundaries of the Yankton Sioux Reservation and, after 1905, was home to a privately developed town. Despite following a relatively uniform impulse, officials from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with commercial and educational interests, implemented distinct programs.
Using reports from the BIA farm …

Transport And Fate Of Nitrate At The Ground-Water/Surface-Water Interface, Larry J. Puckett, Celia Zamora, Hedeff Essaid, John T. Wilson, Henry M. Johnson, Michael Brayton, Jason R. Vogel
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Although numerous studies of hyporheic exchange and denitrification have been conducted in pristine, high-gradient streams, few studies of this type have been conducted in nutrient-rich, low-gradient streams. This is a particularly important subject given the interest in nitrogen (N) inputs to the Gulf of Mexico and other eutrophic aquatic systems. A combination of hydrologic, mineralogical, chemical, dissolved gas, and isotopic data were used to determine the processes controlling transport and fate of 3− in streambeds at five sites across the USA. Water samples were collected from streambeds at depths ranging from 0.3 to 3 m at three to five …
