Feral Hog Management: Typing Performance Measures To Resources Protected, Michael J. Bodenchuk Apr 2008

Feral Hog Management: Typing Performance Measures To Resources Protected, Michael J. Bodenchuk

National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)

Feral hogs impact a number of resources including agricultural crops, wildlife, rangelands and watersheds. Additionally, feral hogs pose a disease risk to domestic livestock and humans. The Texas Wildlife Services Program (TWSP) is responsible for managing damage to these and other categories of resources. TWSP is developing performance measures specific to the resource protected which allows for better decisions regarding the intensity of control needed. Conflicts discussed include human and livestock diseases, agricultural crops, rangeland, wildlife predation and competition with native wildlife. Performance measures for each resource will be discussed.

Military Innovations Adapted To Feral Hog Control In Sw Georgia, Rod Pinkston Apr 2008

Military Innovations Adapted To Feral Hog Control In Sw Georgia, Rod Pinkston

National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)

Advanced technology of our nation’s military dominates the battlefield in combat. However, we are currently at war with feral hogs in our country and severely losing the battle in many states. Traditional methods are not effective. We have used lessons learned from experienced Soldiers to implement tactical strategies and design equipment for the four-legged feral enemy within our borders. Technical advances in thermal imaging equipment derived from military operations are being applied to feral hog control in southwest Georgia using first to civilian market infrared equipment. These infrared devices allow users to acquire and identify targets in total darkness out …

Disease Surveillance Of Wild Hogs In Great Smoky Mountains National Park – A Focus On Pseudorabies, Tabbatha Cavendish, William Stiver, E. Kim Delozier

National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)

Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) has received credible reports of individuals obtaining feral hogs from other states and illegally releasing them near the park boundary. These reports have been supported by the removal of hogs with physical and behavioral characteristics not common of wild hogs in GRSM. In 2001, GRSM established a partnership with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to survey for wild hog diseases and, in 2005, similar partnerships were established with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services. From 2001 …

A Method For Masking And Removing Oil Stains From Rugged Solid Surfaces, Nazim Muradov

UCF Patents

Methods, compositions and kits for masking and subsequent removal of oil, grease, rust and other stains from a variety of rough solid surfaces, including, but not limited to stone, concrete, asphalt, stucco brick, and ceramic. The methods include coating the stains with an opaque or translucent thin film of a composition that makes the stain practically indistinguishable against the background, exposing the coated stain to the elements, such as, sunlight, air, moisture, resulting in spontaneous transformation, degradation and subsequent removal of the stains from the solid surfaces. The compositions include a photocatalyst by itself or the photocatalyst combined with at …

Tolkien's Linguistic Application Of The Seventh Deadly Sin: Lust, Emma B. Hawkins

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

A look at how Tolkien developed the concept of the sin of lust in Middle-earth, giving it his own unique but linguistically-based interpretation as an intensifier of other sins, rather than using its more common, purely sexual, modern interpretation.

Manatee Sound Localization: Performance Abilities, Interaural Level Cues, And Usage Of Auditory Evoked Potential Techniques To Determine Sound Conduction Pathways, Debborah Colbert Apr 2008

Manatee Sound Localization: Performance Abilities, Interaural Level Cues, And Usage Of Auditory Evoked Potential Techniques To Determine Sound Conduction Pathways, Debborah Colbert

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Three experiments investigated the ability and means by which Florida manatees determine sound source directionality. An eight-choice discrimination paradigm determined the sound localization abilities of two manatees within a 360° array of speakers. Five conditions were tested including a 3,000 and 200 ms, 95 dB, 0.2-24 kHz signal, a 3,000 ms, 80 dB, 18-24 kHz signal, a 3000 ms, 110 dB, 0.2-1.5 kHz signal and a 200 ms, 101 dB, 4 kHz tonal signal. A sixth condition attenuated the level of the 3,000 ms, 95 dB, 0.2-24 kHz signal in 3 dB increments until accuracy reached 75%. Subjects performed above …

Rapid Evolution In Introduced Species, ‘Invasive Traits’ And Recipient Communities: Challenges For Predicting Invasive Potential, Kenneth D. Whitney, Christopher A. Gabler Apr 2008

Rapid Evolution In Introduced Species, ‘Invasive Traits’ And Recipient Communities: Challenges For Predicting Invasive Potential, Kenneth D. Whitney, Christopher A. Gabler

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The damaging effects of invasive organisms have triggered the development of Invasive Species Predictive Schemes (ISPS). These schemes evaluate biological and historical characteristics of species and prioritize those that should be the focus of exclusion, quarantine, and/or control. However, it is not clear how commonly these schemes take microevolutionary considerations into account. We review the recent literature and find that rapid evolutionary changes are common during invasions. These evolutionary changes include rapid adaptation of invaders to new environments, effects of hybridization, and evolution in recipient communities. Strikingly, we document 38 species in which the specific traits commonly associated with invasive …

Effects Of Predation Risk, Density And Disease On Energy Efficiency In A Larval Anuran, Sarah Crane Apr 2008

Effects Of Predation Risk, Density And Disease On Energy Efficiency In A Larval Anuran, Sarah Crane

Theses and Dissertations

Predation, density and disease affect behavior, morphology and growth. There is a lack of information on how these changes relate to efficiency of energy transfer in anuran larvae, although previous studies suggest that predation should decrease and competition should increase efficiency. Using a 2 x 2 factorial design, we manipulated predation presence and larval density to test how predation risk and density affect energy efficiency. During the experiment, approximately half of the tadpoles were infected by an unknown disease. Neither predation risk nor density affected assimilation or growth efficiency, despite changes in growth and development. Disease, however, decreased gut length …

Protein Phosphorylation And A Novel Phosphatase In The Cyanobacterium Anabaena, Robert A. Mullis Jr. Apr 2008

Protein Phosphorylation And A Novel Phosphatase In The Cyanobacterium Anabaena, Robert A. Mullis Jr.

Senior Honors Theses

The focus of this paper is a dual-specific protein phosphatase (DSP) previously found in the periplasm of the cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7120 that may regulate circadian rhythms in that organism. To fully understand the topic, summaries of enzyme action, cyanobacteria, circadian rhythms, and phosphorylation cycles are required and therefore discussed in this report before the presentation of previous and current laboratory research centered on the phosphatase.

A continuous cyanobacterial culture was maintained while cells were collected for harvesting periplasm. Tests to determine size, enzyme activity, and protein content were performed on the periplasm of the bacterial cells. Initial findings revealed …
