Influential Parasites: Importance Of Haemosporidian Parasite Infection In The White-Throated Sparrow, Amanda P. Jamison

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of parasite-mediated selection, as originally postulated by Hamilton and Zuk ( 1982) in birds is an area of intense study as it allows us to test the significance of the relationship between host and parasite. Recent developments of resistance to treatments in humans for parasite induced disease, creates a place for this important research and emphasizes the need to find the connections and interactions in this relationship between ecology and infectious disease. The development of new molecular techniques has made the study of parasitism in birds and mammals easier and provides an efficient sensitive . methodology to detect …

Conversion Of Biomass Resource To Useful Forms Of Energy And Other Products, Steven Jennings May 2008

Conversion Of Biomass Resource To Useful Forms Of Energy And Other Products, Steven Jennings

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States is facing increasing pressure to find renewable energy sources due to rising energy costs. With world energy demand at an all time high, renewable energy has been thrust into the forefront of research as a means to mitigate this looming crisis. Throughout the United States, there is a large quantity of agricultural biomass that could be used to generate energy and lessen the dependence on diminishing resources. Specifically, animal feeding operations (AFOs) such as dairies generate large amounts of cow manure, which, when improperly handled, causes both air and water pollution. Currently, most manure is temporarily stockpiled …

A Multi-Scale Test Of The Forage Maturation Hypothesis In A Partially Migratory Ungulate Population, Mark Hebblewhite, Evelyn Merrill, Greg Mcdermid May 2008

A Multi-Scale Test Of The Forage Maturation Hypothesis In A Partially Migratory Ungulate Population, Mark Hebblewhite, Evelyn Merrill, Greg Mcdermid

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

The forage maturation hypothesis (FMH) proposes that ungulate migration is driven by selection for high forage quality. Because quality declines with plant maturation, but intake declines at low biomass, ungulates are predicted to select for intermediate forage biomass to maximize energy intake by following phenological gradients during the growing season. We tested the FMH in the Canadian Rocky Mountains by comparing forage availability and selection by both migrant and nonmigratory resident elk (Cervus elaphus) during three growing seasons from 2002-2004. First, we confirmed that the expected trade-off between forage quality and quantity occurred across vegetation communities. Next, we modeled forage …

The Unfolded Protein Response Increases Production Of Pro-Angiogenic Factors By Tumor Cell Lines, Nan Liao May 2008

The Unfolded Protein Response Increases Production Of Pro-Angiogenic Factors By Tumor Cell Lines, Nan Liao

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The rapid growth and proliferation of tumor cells will be limited at a stage when they encounter inadequate levels of oxygen and nutrient supply within the poorly vascularized tumor mass. These severe conditions negatively affect the proper folding of nascent proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and lead to accumulation of unfolded protein within ER which is referred to as ER stress. Consequently, it will trigger the unfolded protein response (UPR) signal pathway through ER membrane stress sensor proteins including activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6), inositol-requiring 1 (IRE1) and PKR-like ER localized kinase (PERK). The UPR is largely a cytoprotective …

Representaciones De Figuras Feministas En La Muestra Despierta!, Kathryn Lane

Pitzer Senior Theses

Light-Triggered Proton And Electron Transfer In Flavin Cofactors, Guifeng Li, Ksenija D. Glusac May 2008

Light-Triggered Proton And Electron Transfer In Flavin Cofactors, Guifeng Li, Ksenija D. Glusac

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The pH dependent behavior of two flavin cofactors, flavin-adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flavin mononucleotide (FMN), has been characterized using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy for the first time. The flavin excited state was characterized in three states of protonation (Fl(-), Fl, and FlH(+)). We found that Fl and Fl(-) exhibit the same excited state absorption but that the lifetime of Fl(-) is much shorter than that of Fl. The transient absorption spectrum of FlH(+) is significantly different from Fl and Fl(-), suggesting that the electronic properties of the flavin chromophore become appreciably modified by protonation. We further studied the excited state …

The Effect Of Pre And Peri-Natal Exposure To Arsenic On Gene Expression In Fetal Rat Lung, Jorge Blanco

Theses (Pre-2016)

Arsenic is an element found naturally in ground water. Arsenic is detrimental to health and has been linked to various diseases including, skin lesions, Blackfoot disease, and cancer of the bladder, kidney, lungs, skin, and prostate. Areas with high levels arsenic exposure through drinking water have been seen to have an increase in the aforementioned diseases. Previous studies have shown arsenic to be a promoter of carcinogenesis. Rats exposed to arsenic have had a 50% accumulation of inorganic arsenic in the lungs within one hour of exposure. Other studies have also shown that arsenic crosses the placenta and affects the …

On Voice And Spirit, Michael Costik May 2008

On Voice And Spirit, Michael Costik

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"This quote always struck me very powerfully. “The spirit nourishes within.” Is there a separation of voice from our spiritual being? Over the past several months I have given a lot of thought to the nature of music, singing, and voice. As a student of music, I frequently thought that my training did not solely pertain to singing, but I rarely reflected on this at. Now, I realize that I was being formed in virtues that are not separate from the desire for integrity. I believe that music itself …

Supernatural: The Juxtaposition Of Sensuality And The Macabre In Edgar Allen Poe’S Ligeia, Cathy Joyce Clay May 2008

Supernatural: The Juxtaposition Of Sensuality And The Macabre In Edgar Allen Poe’S Ligeia, Cathy Joyce Clay

Theses (Pre-2016)

Tentative Title: Supernatural: The Juxtaposition of Sensuality and the Macabre in Edgar Allan Poe's "Ligeia." 2. Objectives: To determine Edgar Allan Poe's purpose for creating the tragic death of a beautiful heroine in order to achieve the metaphysical quality of his work. 3. Status of the Question: Poe has long been renowned for having believed that there is nothing more romantic than the death of a beautiful woman; with that in mind, Poe creates Ligeia, a character whose beauty transcends her morbid death. Whereas Poe pairs the two popular Victorian themes of beauty and death, he appears to do so …

Use Of Shade Trees To Reduce Leaf Herbivory Of Coffea Arabica By Atta Cephalotes (Formicidae) On Farms In Cañitas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, May 2008, Tyler H. Stuart May 2008

Use Of Shade Trees To Reduce Leaf Herbivory Of Coffea Arabica By Atta Cephalotes (Formicidae) On Farms In Cañitas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, May 2008, Tyler H. Stuart

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The addition of a specific group of rapid-growth shade tree species to coffee in monoculture, or the inclusion of these species in shade-grown coffee, may reduce leaf herbivory by Atta cephalotes. This study was conducted in Cañitas, Costa Rica on three plots—shade-grown, monoculture, and no coffee—within coffee plantations, each of which had a separate A. cephalotes colony. After observing the selection process of the leaf-cutter ants among four non-coffee, shade tree species and two varieties of coffee, Caturra and Katway, results indicated that the ants had no preference(s) of the tested species within any of the tested plots (Shade: K-W …

Preferential Oviposition By Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) Butterflies On Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae) Leaves With Higher Cyanide Concentrations, May 2008, Phillip Burkholder May 2008

Preferential Oviposition By Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) Butterflies On Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae) Leaves With Higher Cyanide Concentrations, May 2008, Phillip Burkholder

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Passiflora spp. produces cyanogenic glycosides to prevent herbivory. The butterfly subfamily Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) has broken through this defense with the ability to ingest the cyanogenic compounds. A coevolutionary arms race of adaptations and counter-adaptations followed, in which it is believed that Passiflora spp. evolved a series of counter-adaptive defenses, like egg-mimics, leaf shape, and extrafloral nectarines, to specifically combat heliconiines. While sometimes overcoming these adaptations, heliconiines still consider them for oviposition. Additionally, the role of cyanide may also have an effect on oviposition. It has been suggested that while detrimental to larvae, cyanide provides protection that promotes oviposition. There are …

Health Of The Herd Bull, Russ Daly May 2008

Health Of The Herd Bull, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The importance of the herd bull to the reproductive performance and profitability of cow herds that utilize natural service cannot be underestimated. Health problems in a bull may result either in decreased fertility in that bull or, in the worst case, in an infectious disease that could spread to the rest of the breeding herd, with disastrous results for herd fertility. For these reasons, the health of incoming and existing herd bulls is of utmost importance.

Ecotourism Sustainability, Lori W. Hedrick May 2008

Ecotourism Sustainability, Lori W. Hedrick

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Ecotourism is defined by the Ecotourism Society as “responsible travel to natural areas which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of the local people”. The effect of this type of tourism poses both negative and positive impacts on the tourist and society. The importance of true ecotourism is to conserve and improve the environment, but the sustainability of this type of tourism can face ecological and economic challenges.

Chimpanzees Do Not Take Advantage Of Very Low Cost Opportunities To Deliver Food To Unrelated Group Members, Jennifer Vonk, Sarah F. Brosnan, Joan B. Silk, Joseph Heinrich, Amanda S. Richardson, Susan P. Lambeth, Steven J. Schapiro, Daniel J. Povinelli May 2008

Chimpanzees Do Not Take Advantage Of Very Low Cost Opportunities To Deliver Food To Unrelated Group Members, Jennifer Vonk, Sarah F. Brosnan, Joan B. Silk, Joseph Heinrich, Amanda S. Richardson, Susan P. Lambeth, Steven J. Schapiro, Daniel J. Povinelli

Faculty Publications

We conducted experiments on two populations of chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, to determine whether they would take advantage of opportunities to provide food rewards to familiar group members at little cost to themselves. In both of the experiments described here, chimpanzees were able to deliver identical rewards to themselves and to other members of their social groups. We compared the chimpanzees' behaviour when they were paired with another chimpanzee and when they were alone. If chimpanzees are motivated to provide benefits to others, they are expected to consistently deliver rewards to others and to distinguish between the partner-present and partner-absent …

A Retrospective Look At A Sample Of Juvenile Sex Offenders From Two Level Six Residential Treatment Centers In Utah: 1998-2007, Miriam Elizabeth Gunn May 2008

A Retrospective Look At A Sample Of Juvenile Sex Offenders From Two Level Six Residential Treatment Centers In Utah: 1998-2007, Miriam Elizabeth Gunn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study and treatment of juvenile sex offenders (JSOs) has been steadily growing since its separation from the adult sex offender category in the early 1980s. Although many studies concern themselves with one specific research variable, this study looked at the presence of twelve characteristics historically associated with JSOs: sexual abuse, early exposure to sexuality, conduct disorder problems, exposure to crime in the family of origin, personal substance abuse, family substance abuse, school performance difficulties, school behavior problems, mental health difficulties, social skills deficits, changes in family structure, and nonsexual forms of abuse. This was an effort to see if …
