Seasonal Patterns Of Plasma Testosterone Levels, Bite Force, And Locomotor Performance In Non-Territorial Male Lizards, Aspidoscelis Sexlineata, Timothy Adam Gowan
Seasonal Patterns Of Plasma Testosterone Levels, Bite Force, And Locomotor Performance In Non-Territorial Male Lizards, Aspidoscelis Sexlineata, Timothy Adam Gowan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The ability to perform key behaviors associated with reproduction, such as biting and locomotion in male lizards, has been linked to social dominance and reproductive success. The underlying mechanisms that govern variation in performance capacity, however, remain unclear. The steroid hormone testosterone mediates numerous traits associated with reproduction in male vertebrates and has been hypothesized to mediate variation in performance. This study examined seasonal patterns of circulating testosterone, morphology, bite force, and locomotor performance in a non-territorial lizard species to address this hypothesis. Male Aspidoscelis sexlineata (n=133) were collected throughout the active season, and testosterone levels and performance capacities were …
Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo
Evaluation Of Weaning Regimen And Seminal Plasma Biology On Reproductive Management In Cattle, John Fredrick Odhiambo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of any reproductive management system in cattle is to ensure that cows breed at the earliest opportune time and maintain their pregnancy to term. However, delayed resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclic activity in primiparous beef cows and pregnancy losses in dairy cows continue to impede progress in obtaining sound reproductive efficiency in these species. Three studies were designed to test the following hypotheses: (1) Does removal of lactational stress in beef cows by early weaning of calves improve cow energy profile and postpartum reproductive performance? (2) Does artificial insemination (AI) with adjunctive seminal plasma (SP) or transforming growth …
The Inheritance Of Morphological And Behavioral Differences In The Mating Signals Of Sailfin And Shortfin Mollies, Stephanie Loveless
The Inheritance Of Morphological And Behavioral Differences In The Mating Signals Of Sailfin And Shortfin Mollies, Stephanie Loveless
All Theses
Changes in mating signals often result in the development of new species, thus, understanding the genetic basis of traits that confer pre-mating reproductive isolation can shed light on the speciation process. This study used interspecific hybridization between poeciliid fish, a sailfin molly (Poecilia velifera) and a shortfin molly (P. mexicana), to generate reciprocal F1 and backcross hybrids to investigate patterns of inheritance of traits that contribute to mating signal differences between these two groups of mollies. The first part of my study focused on behavioral differences in the mating system of sailfin and shortfin mollies. I observed mating behaviors of …
Efficient Utilization Of Water And Nitrogen Resources For Grain Sorghum Under Rainfed Conditions, Akwasi A. Abunyewa
Efficient Utilization Of Water And Nitrogen Resources For Grain Sorghum Under Rainfed Conditions, Akwasi A. Abunyewa
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is the fifth world leading cereal after maize, wheat, rice and barley. The crop can yield reasonably well under adverse conditions of low soil water and high temperature. A three year field study was conducted in a transect across Nebraska where annual mean precipitation ranges from 300 to 900 mm yr-1 to evaluate management practices to optimize yield potential under water limiting conditions. Loss in grain yield due to planting configurations ranged from 20 to 30% with skip-row configurations compared to conventional planting configuration (s0) at the site with greatest precipitation. At …
The Ecological Importance Of Severe Wildfires: Some Like It Hot, Richard L. Hutto
The Ecological Importance Of Severe Wildfires: Some Like It Hot, Richard L. Hutto
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Many scientists and forest land managers concur that past fire suppression, grazing, and timber harvesting practices have created unnatural and unhealthy conditions in the dry, ponderosa pine forests of the western United States. Specifically, such forests are said to carry higher fuel loads and experience fires that are more severe than those that occurred historically. It remains unclear, however, how far these generalizations can be extrapolated in time and space, and how well they apply to the more mesic ponderosa pine systems and to other forest systems within the western United States. I use data on the pattern of distribution …

The Use Of The Reducing Agent N-(2-Mercaptopropionyl)Glycine To Detoxify Oxidized Lipids In Atherosclerotic Lesions., Nason P. Schooler 1974-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease, a result of atherosclerosis. The reducing agent N-(2-Mercaptopropionyl)glycine (MPG) as been found to be an effective antioxidant therapy in a number of conditions, and our hypothesis is that it will be an effective agent in the detoxification of oxidized lipids in atherosclerosis. Our results indicate some protective effect, along with some toxicity at high doses, with refinement of the experimental model necessary before results can be conclusive. Nevertheless, antioxidant and aldehyde-quenching agents in general have been shown to be of benefit in the detoxification of oxidized lipids, and …
Identification And Characterization Of A Cadmium-Transporting P-Type Atpase In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David J. Adle
Identification And Characterization Of A Cadmium-Transporting P-Type Atpase In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, David J. Adle
Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Detoxification and homeostatic acquisition of metal ions are vital for all living organisms. Non-physiological heavy metals are toxic at low concentrations and represent major environmental hazards to human health. In particular, cadmium is a toxic environmental pollutant linked to a number of ailments including cancer, kidney and bone disease and reproductive disorders. The biological effects of cadmium toxicity which lead to human disease and the cellular mechanisms for cadmium defense are ill defined. Thus, the study of heavy metal detoxification systems represents an important research avenue to help combat cadmium related disorders.
The goal of this research project was to …
Manipulation Of The Moloney Murine Leukemia Virus Envelope Protein In An Effort To Develop Directly And Indirectly Targeted Retroviral Vectors For Use In Human Gene Therapy, Geneva M. Vasser
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Highly effective, targeted therapies against cancer would revolutionize the way people recover from this devastating illness. Gone would be the lingering side effects of the current non-specific treatments and in their place would be faster recovery times, better quality of life both during and after treatment, and less ambiguity about whether or not treatment was effective. This concept will elude modern medicine until treatments can be tailored to the patient's individual and unique disease. This concept of a transient, targeted, and tailored vehicle aimed at cancer cells lends itself to the use of replication deficient retroviral gene therapy vectors with …

Constituent Order And Participant Reference In Dolnia Hani Narrative Discourse, Karen L. Gainer
Constituent Order And Participant Reference In Dolnia Hani Narrative Discourse, Karen L. Gainer
Theses and Dissertations
Hani is a language in the Loloish family, spoken primarily in Yunnan Province of southwest China. This thesis presents a description of constituent order and participant reference in written Hani narrative discourse. The primary data source for this thesis consists of three narratives, which are included in the appendices.
Constituent order in Hani is largely constrained by the principle of natural information flow. In order to conform to this principle, some constituents may appear in two or more different positions in the clause, depending on the information structure of the assertion being made. Information structure also influences the use and …
Verbal Tone In Mpyemo, Bradley D. Festen
Verbal Tone In Mpyemo, Bradley D. Festen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes the tonal patterns and alternations present in the Mpyemo language (Bantu A.86c – ISO code mcx), with special attention to the verbal system. Rules and autosegmental representations are used to clarify and provide a formal analysis. A tone raising rule causes the underlying two-tone system to display three phonetic levels at the surface. This thesis explores nominalized verbs and verbs in the imperative. In addition, inflected verbs are described, although only a limited set of inflectional morphemes are treated. Thus, I look at verbs with inflectional prefixes for subject agreement, the perfect, and a single verbal auxiliary …

Auto Updater Using Web Services, Vineel Vemula
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this project is to develop a software application which when included in any software will provide the feature of automatic updatability. One of the serious problems software industries are currently facing is the faulty and error prone nature of the software being developed. Such faulty software when having an ability to update itself automatically as soon as an update or patch is released by the vendors will be more desirable by the customers or the end users. This project develops a platform dependant application which can be included in any software that supports the Microsoft.NET framework.

Pyrosequencing Analysis Of The Trichodiene Synthase 5 (Tri 5) Gene From The Members Of The Genus Stachybotrys, Tineace Taylor Farrow
Theses (Pre-2016)
This research will focus on multiple isolates of Stachybotrys species from culture collection companies which will be studied in an attempt to determine the presence of the Trichodiene synthase 5 (Tri5) gene, an enzyme involved in the early stages of the biosynthesis of trichothecenes. Using general primers, the Tri5 gene will be amplified by customized PCR technique. The amplicons will be sequenced using a new multiple sequence technique personally designed. Stachybotrys is a genus of filamentous fungi belonging to the class of anamorphic ascomycetes (Kirk et al, 2001). The genus has a single well-known species, Stachybotrys chartarum. S. chartarum was …
Breaking Protocol: The Failure Of The Bush Administration To Ratify The Kyoto Protocol As A State Crime, Jacquelynn A. Doyon
Breaking Protocol: The Failure Of The Bush Administration To Ratify The Kyoto Protocol As A State Crime, Jacquelynn A. Doyon
Masters Theses
Using the Kyoto Protocol as a centrifugal focus point, this research conceptualizes the failure of the United States to act on global warming as a state crime. The decision of the United States not to ratify the protocol was largely based on economic justifications. However, the actions taken following the Kyoto Protocol indicate that the US government was instead dedicated more to their own economical interests, rather than those of the state was a whole. Through the exploration of possible economic and political motivations, the research identifies ulterior motives of the Bush administration that have proved to be detrimental to …
Single Muslim Young Adults: Negotiating Identities, Religion And Desire, Zarinah El-Amin Naeem
Single Muslim Young Adults: Negotiating Identities, Religion And Desire, Zarinah El-Amin Naeem
Masters Theses
This ethnographic thesis is an empirically rich, critical analysis of the singlehood of Muslim young adults. Based on interviews with 21 single Muslims aged 18-36, and participant observation of Muslim spaces, I demonstrate that while Islam and Muslim communities present "ideal" behaviors, Islam is not alone. Instead, like identity, the singlehood of American Muslims is created and recreated through dialectical relationships with several cultural "wombs" including religion, popular culture, family, and ethnicity. As Muslim young adults encounter these often contradictory ideologies, they accept and reject parts, and negotiate their identities, religion and desires - all while struggling to maintain a …

“Poor Fools, Nothing But Bellies” (Theo 26-27): Eating Imagery In Hesiod As Personification Of Oppression, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
Delivered during the 1999 meeting at the University of Notre Dame, this paper discusses the symbolic power of food imagery, especially its use in the cultural construction of humanity and in the process of dehumanization of oppressed groups. Tracing the use of food and eating imagery to the early seventh century BCE Greek poet Hesiod, Flint-Hamilton demonstrates the importance of studying early Classical texts to help us better understand modern-day oppression and the legacy of slavery.

1807-2007: Whose Bicentennial And Whose Abolition?, Cyprian Davis O.S.B.
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
This paper, the keynote address of the 2007 annual meeting at Saint Meinrad Archabbey and Seminary, delineates the events leading to the 1807 abolition of the slave trade in Great Britain and traces the roots and significance of this historic event for the Church. Davis demonstrates that the complex relationship between the Church and slavery continues to shape the experiences of Catholics today.

Evaluation Of Arrayed-Field Concentration Measurements And U. S. Epa-Regulatory Models For The Determination Of Mixed-Source Particulate Matter Emissions, Derek Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
With the continued population growth and the blurring of the urban and rural interface, air quality impacts associated with agricultural particle-producing processes are becoming increasingly important. There is a lack of emission rate data from these source types and no prescribed measurement technique available to the agricultural and regulatory communities. One technique that has shown promise is combining field measurements with inverse modeling. This approach was used herein to examine particulate emissions from an almond harvesting operation, a cotton ginning facility, and comparative emissions from conservation versus conventional tillage practices. EPAapproved models ISCST3 and AERMOD were used with AirMetrics samplers. …

Lessons In Humanity: A Memoir, Chelsi Joy Sutton-Linderman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the opening pages of his work, Dog Years; A Memoir, Mark Doty explains: Love for a wordless creature, once it takes hold, is an enchantment, and the enchanted speak, famously, in private mutterings, cryptic riddles, or gibberish. This is why I shouldn't be writing anything about the two dogs that have been such presences for sixteen years of my life. How on earth could I stand at the requisite distance to say anything that might matter? (1)
In this thesis I argue that Doty, among other respected contemporary writers, is saying something that matters when he writes of …

Participants completed an online pretest survey and then viewed the "Face the Fats" website at their own pace. …
Evolutionary Genetics Of Tetrodotoxin (Ttx) Resistance In Snakes: Tracking A Feeding Adaptation From Populations Through Clades, Chris R. Feldman
Evolutionary Genetics Of Tetrodotoxin (Ttx) Resistance In Snakes: Tracking A Feeding Adaptation From Populations Through Clades, Chris R. Feldman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Understanding the nature of adaptive evolution has been the recent focus of research detailing the genetic basis of adaptation and theoretical work describing the mechanics of adaptive evolution. Nevertheless, key questions regarding the process of adaptive evolution remain. Ultimately, a detailed description of the ecological context, evolutionary history, and genetic basis of adaptations is required to advance our understanding of adaptive evolution. To address some of the contemporary issues surrounding adaptive evolution, I examine phenotypic and genotypic changes in a snake feeding adaptation.
Adaptations can arise through fixation of novel mutations or recruitment of existing variation. Some populations of the …
Treatment Of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.): Economics And Feasibility, Christopher L. Thompson
Treatment Of Saltcedar (Tamarix Spp.): Economics And Feasibility, Christopher L. Thompson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The invasive species Saltcedar is affecting water and land resources throughout the western states of America. Because of great water use capabilities and other ecosystem detriments, Saltcedar has been targeted for treatment.
For successful management of Saltcedar, individual landowners need to be aware of the costs and benefits of treating Saltcedar. Eleven of the most commonly reported treatment methods were evaluated for firm level economic feasibility. Evaluated on the basis of treatment cost, treatment effectiveness, Saltcedar water-use, and re-vegetation water-use, a production plan of ten years was created for each treatment method. Some treatment methods required re-treatment and were evaluated …
