Schwann cell myelination depends on Krox-20/Egr2 and other promyelin transcription factors that are activated by axonal signals and control the generation of myelin-forming cells. Myelin-forming cells remain remarkably plastic and can revert to the immature phenotype, a process which is seen in injured nerves and demyelinating neuropathies. We report that c-Jun is an important regulator of this plasticity. At physiological levels, c-Jun inhibits myelin gene activation by Krox-20 or cyclic adenosine monophosphate. c-Jun also drives myelinating cells back to the immature state in transected nerves in vivo. Enforced c-Jun expression inhibits myelination in cocultures. Furthermore, c-Jun and Krox-20 show a …

Yeats, Eliot, And Apocalyptic Poetry, Nancy Helen Fletcher May 2008

Yeats, Eliot, And Apocalyptic Poetry, Nancy Helen Fletcher

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Yeats and Eliot merit comparison because they wrote poetry that has been described as apocalyptic in the same historical period and in the same general geographic area but described entirely different visions. These particular works of Yeats and Eliot are appropriate because they represent two widely varying viewpoints on the causes, nature and desirability of what each author felt would be the coming apocalypse. Therefore, more can be learned by comparing the very different outlooks of the poems than by considering each poem separately.

Yeats sees humanity as both the victim and the beneficiary of a series of inescapable historical …

Big Brown And The Troubled State Of Racing, Richard C. Crepeau May 2008

Big Brown And The Troubled State Of Racing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Big Brown's victory at The Preakness yesterday has set the stage for a possible Triple Crown winner. At Belmont Park on June 7, and in the three weeks leading up to it, there will be much excitement and speculation in anticipation of Big Brown's big race. Ten horses have made it to this stage over the past three decades only to fall short at the Belmont Stakes. Nearly all of these ten, and now Big Brown, were felt to have an excellent chance to join the elite group of Triple Crown winners.

Nature And Rites Of Passage, Sowon Joo May 2008

Nature And Rites Of Passage, Sowon Joo

Theses

My work tells the story of life and living. We all experience birth and death, and many complicated life events and changes occur during the living of a life. What I deem the most important areas of life are the rites of passage that everyone commonly experiences. The essential passages are birth and death, and between these two events, we all experience physical and intellectual development and growth. Throughout this thesis, my work expresses these rites of passage by metaphor.

In addition to metal, several of my sculptural forms incorporate painting on canvas and sculpted wood: the painting providing atmosphere …

Expression And Function Of Williams Syndrome Transcription Factor (Wstf) In The Neural Development Of Xenopus Laevis, Sreepurna Malakar May 2008

Expression And Function Of Williams Syndrome Transcription Factor (Wstf) In The Neural Development Of Xenopus Laevis, Sreepurna Malakar

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Imitation Switch (ISWI) is a member of the Switch2/Sugar Non-Fermenting2 (SWI/SNF2) superfamily of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) - dependent chromatin remodelers. Twenty different ISWI complexes have been identified so far in yeast, Drosophila, Xenopus and mammals. Three ISWI-containing complexes, WSTF-ISWI chromatin remodeling complex (WICH), ATP-dependent chromatin assembly and remodeling factor (ACF) and chromatin accessibility complex (CHRAC), have been characterized in Xenopus. Loss of ISWI function in Xenopus embryos results in severe defects in neural and eye development, including loss of retinal differentiation and formation of cataracts. We have begun to dissect the contributions of individual ISWI dependent complexes to development, by …

Geographic Distribution Of Genetic Variation In Ten Species Of North American Forest Birds: Island Endemism And Transcontinental Ranges, Carrie M. Topp May 2008

Geographic Distribution Of Genetic Variation In Ten Species Of North American Forest Birds: Island Endemism And Transcontinental Ranges, Carrie M. Topp

Biological Sciences

Comparative genetic studies of geographically co-occurring species can lend insight into current and historic relationships among populations and species. This enables examination of similarities and differences among species and provides information about historic processes leading to current genetic and geographic distributions. I used this approach to study two different types of avian co-distribution: island endemism and transcontinental ranges. The Queen Charlotte Islands (QCI), Canada, have many endemic subspecies; historically it may have been a glacial refugium. I used genetic analyses to determine subspecies uniqueness and to identify units of conservation for five species, four with endemic QCI subspecies. I found …

Responses Of Captive Common Eiders To Implanted Satellite Transmitters With Percutaneous Antennas, Christopher J. Latty May 2008

Responses Of Captive Common Eiders To Implanted Satellite Transmitters With Percutaneous Antennas, Christopher J. Latty

Biological Sciences

Implanted transmitters have been used for over a decade to track the migrations and habitat use of many sea duck species, but their effects remain largely unstudied. To address this, I assessed the physiological and behavioral responses and characterized the clinical responses of six Common Eiders implanted with a transmitter with a percutaneous antenna. To maintain a semi-natural feeding regime, I fed birds benthicly in a 4.9 m deep dive column. I collected blood, feces, mass, and video data prior to surgery to establish baselines and at staggered intervals for 3.5 months post surgery to determine responses. All birds had …

Knuckle Sandwich & Other Stories, Sean Conway

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Knuckle Sandwich & Other Stories is a collection of fiction written in the years between 2005 and 2008. The characters in these stories find themselves trying--and often failing--to cope with loss: loss of a romantic relationship, of a loved one, of youth, of innocence.
