Maximal Exercise Electrocardiography Responses And Coronary Heart Disease Mortality Among Men With Diabetes Mellitus, G. William Lyerly, Xuemei Sui, Timothy S. Church, Carl J. Lavie, Gregory A. Hand, Steven N. Blair

Faculty Publications

Background - An abnormal ECG during maximal exercise testing has been shown to be a powerful predictor of future coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality in asymptomatic men. However, little is known about the relationship between exercise ECG responses and CHD risk in men with diabetes mellitus.

Methods and Results - We examined the association between exercise ECG responses and mortality in 2854 men with documented diabetes mellitus (mean age 49.5 years) who completed a maximal treadmill exercise test during the period from 1974 to 2001 and who were without a previous cardiovascular disease (CVD) event at baseline. Mortality due to …

"Sustainable Development": Critical Concepts In Geography, Tyler Vick May 2008

"Sustainable Development": Critical Concepts In Geography, Tyler Vick

Geography Masters Research Papers

This paper reviews significant geographic contributions to academic literature in the arenas of conservation, environmental thought, and "sustainable development", in order to understand why geographers have not been more central contributors to the sustainable development movement. A review of geographic literature reveals no lack of understanding on the "sustainable development" concept. However, the disciplines' contributions are lacking in numbers relative to published articles and in developing research and practical methods for directly benefiting the "sustainable development" movement. In fact, only a handful of geographers have made multiple literary contributions on the topic of "sustainable development."

The discipline of geography is …

Availability And Accessibility Of Information Sources And The Use Of Library Services At Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Akobundu Dike Ugah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Using the case study method, the author investigated the availability and accessibility of information sources and the use of library services in the university library, Michael University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria. The population was made up of 1,000 registered library users, with a random sample of 200. A response rate of 168 was recorded. The study revealed that information sources in the library are not readily available nor easily accessible and concludes that the independent variables of availability and accessibility have influence on, and a significant relationship with, the use of library services.

Emotional Speech Corpus Construction, Annotation And Distribution, Brian Vaughan, Charlie Cullen, Spyros Kousidis, John Mcauley May 2008

Emotional Speech Corpus Construction, Annotation And Distribution, Brian Vaughan, Charlie Cullen, Spyros Kousidis, John Mcauley

Conference papers

This paper details a process of creating an emotional speech corpus by collecting natural emotional speech assets, analysisng and tagging them (for certain acoustic and linguistic features) and annotating them within an on-line database. The definition of specific metadata for use with an emotional speech corpus is crucial, in that poorly (or inaccurately) annotated assets are of little use in analysis. This problem is compounded by the lack of standardisation for speech corpora, particularly in relation to emotion content. The ISLE Metadata Initiative (IMDI) is the only cohesive attempt at corpus metadata standardisation performed thus far. Although not a comprehensive …

The Relationship Between Psychological Well-Being And Work Productivity: Validation Of The Oq Productivity Index, Vinessa Kaye Trotter May 2008

The Relationship Between Psychological Well-Being And Work Productivity: Validation Of The Oq Productivity Index, Vinessa Kaye Trotter

Theses and Dissertations

Managed Mental Health Care (MMHC) began blanketing the United States when cost of care rose exponentially. MMHC is one avenue many employers and insurance companies have chosen to provide employees with mental health treatment at controlled costs. However, not all employers view supplying their employees with mental health treatment beneficial, as they do not know mental health problems can significantly decrease work productivity. Brown and Jones (2005) used the Social Role Scale (SR) of the Severe Outcome Questionnaire (SOQ) to estimate work productivity in employees under the assumption that the scale measures work productivity. The purpose of this study was …

The Cul7 E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Targets Insulin Receptor Substrate 1 For Ubiquitin-Dependent Degradation, Pascal J. Lafontant May 2008

The Cul7 E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Targets Insulin Receptor Substrate 1 For Ubiquitin-Dependent Degradation, Pascal J. Lafontant

Biology Faculty publications

Recent genetic studies have documented a pivotal growth regulatory role played by the Cullin 7 (CUL7) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex containing the Fbw8-substrate-targeting subunit, Skp1, and the ROC1 RING finger protein. In this report, we identified insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), a critical mediator of the insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 signaling, as a proteolytic target of the CUL7 E3 ligase in a manner that depends on mammalian target of rapamycin and the p70 S6 kinase activities. Interestingly, while embryonic fibroblasts of Cul7-/- mice were found to accumulate IRS-1 and exhibit increased activation of IRS-1’s downstream Akt and MEK/ERK pathways, these …

Liability For Consumer Information Security Breaches: Deconstructing Ftc Complaints And Settlements, Joel B. Hanson May 2008

Liability For Consumer Information Security Breaches: Deconstructing Ftc Complaints And Settlements, Joel B. Hanson

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

For several years, hackers taking advantage of security holes in the information system of TJX Companies, Inc. stole sensitive credit and debit card information belonging to at least 45.7 million customers. The TJX breach is one of the largest thefts of consumer information in history and is illustrative of the recent wave of security breaches. Private lawsuits against companies that fail to protect consumer information have typically failed. However, the Federal Trade Commission has taken enforcement action against such companies that fail to implement reasonable security measures to protect customers’ personal information. These complaints have resulted in settlement agreements requiring …

The Imago Mundi Of Honorius Augustodunensis, Nicholas Ryan Foster May 2008

The Imago Mundi Of Honorius Augustodunensis, Nicholas Ryan Foster

Dissertations and Theses

In the past historians have used the works of Honorius Augustodunensis to answer the question of who he was. In doing this the intellectual importance of his work has often been overlooked. Honorius was one of the most popular writers of the early twelfth century, and his most popular work was the Imago Mundi. The purpose of this study is to examine the work and its historical context and to furnish an English translation of the complete text. The present work looks at each book of the Imago Mundi and its sources to develop a concept of Honorius' writing style …

Rumor And The Sichuan Earthquake, Steve Smith May 2008

Rumor And The Sichuan Earthquake, Steve Smith

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

One of the intriguing aspects of the appalling crisis created by the earthquake in Sichuan on May 12—whose death toll as I write is over 40,000 and still rising—has been the role played by rumor. Just four days before the quake, the Sichuan provincial government issued a notice designed to quell “earthquake rumors.” Three days after it, on May15, Xinhua news agency announced that seventeen people had been arrested for circulating malicious rumors, and the Ministry of Public Security revealed that its bureaus in eleven provinces and municipalities had discovered more than forty messages on the internet that “spread false …

Factors Influencing Retention Of Non-Traditional Undergraduate Students And Effective Retention Strategies, Jannette Porta-Avalos

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

A vast amount of literature exists on the topic of college student retention. However, there is still much to be learned about the process a student goes through to decide whether to stay in school or depart at an early stage without accomplishing the intended goal of completing a college education

Most of the research that has been done in the area of student retention has been geared to a homogeneous group of students abstractly referred to as the traditional college student. Since the number of studies about non-traditional students has been limited, the focus of this research was to …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Background

Caenorhabditis elegans locomotion is a simple behavior that has been widely used to dissect genetic components of behavior, synaptic transmission, and muscle function. Many of the paradigms that have been created to study C. elegans locomotion rely on qualitative experimenter observation. Here we report the implementation of an automated tracking system developed to quantify the locomotion of multiple individual worms in parallel.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Our tracking system generates a consistent measurement of locomotion that allows direct comparison of results across experiments and experimenters and provides a standard method to share data between laboratories. The tracker utilizes a video camera …

Letters From Sichuan, Peter Hessler May 2008

Letters From Sichuan, Peter Hessler

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

On May 13th, I filed a web report on the New Yorker’s site, based on what I heard from former students in the early days of the disaster. Since then, I’ve continued to receive notes, and I’ve copied a few below.

When I lived in Sichuan, I was most impressed by the sense of place. The landscape was rugged and beautiful, and the people had a distinct character. They seemed more emotional than in other parts of China; they laughed more freely and their street arguments were more vicious. It wasn’t any surprise that in 1999, after NATO bombed the …

Microgenetic Algorithms And Artificial Neural Networks To Assess Minimum Data Requirements For Prediction Of Pesticide Concentrations In Shallow Groundwater On A Regional Scale, Goloka Behari Sahoo, Chittaranjan Ray

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been extensively used for forecasting problems involving water quantity and quality. In most cases, the geometry and model parameters of the ANN are set using a trial-and-error approach to achieve better network generalization ability, whereby the available data are divided arbitrarily into training, testing, and validation subsets. It has been shown that using the arbitrary sample selection method to assign samples into the training subset commonly results in the inclusion of samples from densely clustered regions and omission of samples from sparsely represented regions. This paper presents a systematic approach using the self-organizing map (SOM) …
