Potential For Abrupt Changes In Atmospheric Methane, Edward Brook, David Archer, Steve Frolking, David Lawrence
Potential For Abrupt Changes In Atmospheric Methane, Edward Brook, David Archer, Steve Frolking, David Lawrence
Earth Sciences
Methane (CH4) is the second most important greenhouse gas that humans directly influence, carbon dioxide (CO2) being first. Concerns about methane’s role in abrupt climate change stem primarily from (1) the large quantities of methane stored as solid methane hydrate on the sea floor and to a lesser degree in terrestrial sediments, and the possibility that these reservoirs could become unstable in the face of future global warming, and (2) the possibility of large-scale conversion of frozen soil in the high- latitude Northern Hemisphere to methane producing wetland, due to accelerated warming at high latitudes. This chapter summarizes the current …
Biodiversity Of Supplemental Wildlife Plantings And Thinned And Burned Pine Habitats In South Carolina, Marguerite Porter
Biodiversity Of Supplemental Wildlife Plantings And Thinned And Burned Pine Habitats In South Carolina, Marguerite Porter
All Theses
Biodiversity conservation is currently an important focus for forest and wildlife management. The overall objective of this study was to compare the diversity of invertebrates and vegetation in white-tailed deer food plots and natural forage areas for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) as indicators of biodiversity. Invertebrates were chosen as the bio-indicator due to their magnitude of contribution to the biodiversity in an ecosystem (Anderson, et al., 2004), ease of capture, and sensitivity to changes in vegetative structure and quality (Hartley, et al., 2007). This study utilized five thinned and burned forested pine sites, five perennial cool-season food plots, and five …

Fall Field Days At Ashland
Nebraska Bird Review
The Fall Field Days were held southeast of Ashland at the Carol Joy Holling Conference Center September 26-28. Field trips to Platte River and Schramm State Parks, Louisville and Memphis SRAs, Jack Sinn WMA, Fontenelle Forest, and Spring Creek Prairie were led by Kevin Poague, Clem Klaphake, Larry Einemann, Rick Schmid, and Don and Janis Paseka.
Hawk migration was in full swing, and we observed 10 species, including a number of Broad-wings and Swainson's. An American Golden-Plover was a standout among the dozen shorebird species, and 10 warbler species were found, including Black-throated Green and Canada. Total species count was …

Birding in the Northern Plains: The Ornithological Writings of Herbert Krause. Ronald R. Nelson, editor. 2008. The Center for Western Studies, Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD. 252 pp. ISBN 978-0-9312170-87-4. Price: $27.50.
Herbert Krause was a native of Minnesota who spent most of his life in South Dakota, teaching at Augustana College from 1938 until his death in 1976. During that time he wrote extensively on South Dakota birds, much of which appeared in South Dakota Bird Notes, the journal of the South Dakota Ornithologists' Union. This book, assembled and edited by his long-time friend Ronald Nelson, brings …

Remembering Everett Gross And Lee Morris
Nebraska Bird Review
Everett Gross, NOU member since 1966, passed away on March 5, 2008, at the age of 88. Mildred, his wife of 65 years, preceded him in death by only a few months [see June 2007 NBR, p. 62]. Both were regular participants at the NOU spring and fall gatherings.
Lee Morris of Benedict was another loyal, longtime member of the NOU. Lee was 86 when he passed away on July 14, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, sons James, Steve (also an NOU member), and Tom, and daughter, Linda. Lee was an NOU officer in the 1960s, and …

Nebraska Bird Review
Of interest to many is evidence of northward movement of species which generally summer on the Great Plains. In addition to White-winged Dove and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, both slowly establishing as breeders in Nebraska, significant numbers of Glossy Ibis continue to be found, probably associated with major increases in numbers of White-faced Ibis. Perhaps the biggest surprise this late summer and early fall was the large number of Lesser Goldfinches reported from the southern Panhandle.
Less exciting by far, but worthy of attention were reports of several Mute Swans in the Omaha area, including a duo of juveniles, and a couple …

Origins, Composition And Distribution Of The Bees Of Cuba (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila), Julio A. Genaro
Insecta Mundi
The origins of the Cuban bee fauna are reviewed. This fauna began to form 40 million years ago during the Proto Antilles period, through ancestors that arrived in successive invasions from adjacent continental areas. The composition of the Antillean fauna has evolved continuously over millions of years until the present time. The native bee fauna of Cuba is represented by 89 species, contained in 29 genera and 4 families. The number of genera represented per family is as follows: Colletidae (3), Halictidae (8), Megachilidae (4), and Apidae (14). The Cuban apifauna contains four principal groups with distinct biogeographic histories: endemic …

Nebraska Bird Review
Rains returned to most of the state this breeding season, with the notable exception of almost the entire Panhandle and the western Sandhills, where the 8-year drought continues. In the western Sandhills some early rains began to restore water levels in the potholes and lakes, but levels fell again as the summer wore on. While recovering water levels in much of the Rainwater Basin brought renewed breeding activity by at least some of the marsh and water birds, continued dry conditions in the western Sandhills curtailed breeding by many water bird species there, with reduced or no breeding by grebes …

Use Of Artificial Burrows By Western Burrowing Owls And Other Vertebrates During Winter In Southern Texas, Jennifer L. Keppers, Mary Kay Skoruppa, Marc C. Woodin, Graham C. Hickman
Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society
Burrows are an integral part of the natural history of the Western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea), however, mammal burrows are uncommon in southern Texas where the Burrowing Owl overwinters. Seventy-two artificial burrows of 2.4 m length were monitored regularly for Burrowing Owl and other vertebrate use over two non-breeding seasons (October through March, 2001 to 2003). Six types of burrows, differing in diameter (15, 20, or 25 cm) and number of openings (two or three), were monitored. Small-diameter (15 cm) burrows accounted for 79% of all Burrowing Owl use. Burrowing Owl use of artificial burrows was not related to …

Moody Blues: The Social Web, Tagging, And Nontextual Discovery Tools For Music, Susannah Cleveland, Gwen Evans
University Libraries Faculty Publications
A common thread in discussions about the Next Generation Catalog is that it should incorporate features beyond the mere textual, one-way presentation of data. At the same time, traditional textual description of music materials often prohibits effective use of the catalog by specialists and nonspecialists alike. Librarians at Bowling Green State University have developed the HueTunes project to explore already established connections between music, color, and emotion, and incorporate those connections into a nontextual discovery tool that could enhance interdisciplinary as well as specialist use of the catalog.

Isometric Morphing Of Triangular Meshes, Prosenjit Bose, Joseph O'Rourke, Chang Shu, Stefanie Wuhrer
Isometric Morphing Of Triangular Meshes, Prosenjit Bose, Joseph O'Rourke, Chang Shu, Stefanie Wuhrer
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We present a novel approach to morph between two isometric poses of the same non-rigid object given as triangular meshes. We model the morphs as linear interpolations in a suitable shape space S. For triangulated 3D polygons, we prove that interpolating linearly in this shape space corresponds to the most isometric morph in R3. We extend this shape space to arbitrary triangulations in 3D using a heuristic approach.
