Mouthful Idol, Claudia Dishon Dec 2008

Mouthful Idol, Claudia Dishon

All Theses

In my work, I create an imaginative realm as a means to structure chaos. This fictional realm is a place to manifest my perceptions of the world. In alignment with my world view, the pieces exhibit multi-faceted sprays of information meant to explain a more rounded picture of reality. Mental clutter becomes visual clutter when realized in my prints. Recognizable objects, animals, foods, herbs, and written text are layered to form compositions that function abstractly at a distance. A closer inspection reveals identifiable forms within the layers of color and shape.
Haphazard imagery receives the same attention and support as …

Human Gene Patents: Proof Of Problems?, Timothy Caulfield Dec 2008

Human Gene Patents: Proof Of Problems?, Timothy Caulfield

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The patenting of human genes has been the focus of intense policy debate. The concerns associated with gene patenting are diverse, ranging from dignity based critiques to suggestions that patents will drive up the cost of health care. But the two concerns that have generated the most policy attention are that they hurt basic research (also known as the "anti-commons" problem) and access to useful technologies. The goal of this short comment is to question the degree to which existing evidence supports the speculation about these two justifications for patent reform. While the issues associated with gene patents are complex …

Intellectual Property And The Politics Of Emerging Technology: Inventors, Citizens, And Powers To Shape The Future, Stephen Hilgartner Dec 2008

Intellectual Property And The Politics Of Emerging Technology: Inventors, Citizens, And Powers To Shape The Future, Stephen Hilgartner

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article argues that there is a mismatch between traditional intellectual property doctrine and the politics of intellectual property today. To examine the nature of the mismatch, I contrast two frameworks that both appear in contemporary debate about intellectual property: the traditional discourse, which focuses on innovation policy, and a newer, less clearly codified discourse that views intellectual property issues from the perspective of the politics of technology. This latter discourse focuses on the challenge of democratic governance in a world where emerging technologies have assumed a central role in constituting the future, raising far-reaching questions about how they should …

Judicial Activism V. Judicial Abdication: A Plea For A Return To The Lochner Era Substantive Due Process Methodology, Brandon S. Swider Dec 2008

Judicial Activism V. Judicial Abdication: A Plea For A Return To The Lochner Era Substantive Due Process Methodology, Brandon S. Swider

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Amid the fierce battles that take place during the confirmation process of a Supreme Court justice, surprisingly little attention is given to the fact that both sides of the political spectrum generally agree on a matter of profound constitutional importance—namely, the proper level of scrutiny courts are to exact with respect to state and federal legislation. Presently, and for the better part of the last 70 years, the dominant attitude among judicial conservatives and liberals alike is that courts have no authority to strictly scrutinize the overwhelming majority of legislation enacted by state and federal legislatures.

This Comment argues that …

Distribution Patterns Of Sciurus Niger (Eastern Fox Squirrel) Leaf Nests Within Woodlots Across A Suburban/Urban Landscape, Carmen M. Salsbury Dec 2008

Distribution Patterns Of Sciurus Niger (Eastern Fox Squirrel) Leaf Nests Within Woodlots Across A Suburban/Urban Landscape, Carmen M. Salsbury

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

To determine habitat characteristics that influence Sciurus niger (Eastern Fox Squirrel) abundance and distribution within a suburban/urban landscape in the midwestern United States, I documented the density and placement of fox squirrel leaf nests in 20 woodlots in the Indianapolis metropolitan area, Marion County, IN. The woodlots varied in size (0.94 to 19.5 ha), approximate age, shape, and degree of isolation from other woodlots and suitable squirrel habitat in the surrounding area. Only 8.0% of nests were located in a tree with another nest, and nests were randomly distributed in all but one woodlot, where they were uniformly dispersed. Nest …

Antimicrobial Screening Of Some Selected Tribal Medicinal Plants From Sriharikota Island, Andhra Pradesh, India, R. Bharath Kumar, B. Suryanarayana

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Sriharikota Island is important because of its rich vegetational diversity and for the fact that it is the site of a Rocket Launching Station built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). An aboriginal tribe called ‘Yanadi’ dwells in a few tribal pockets on Sriharikota Island. However, a few aged tribal men are still able to furnish information regarding their traditional practices of medicines and recipes. There is an urgent need to conserve their herbal wealth and preserve their traditional knowledge for the benefit of modern society. It is with this background, along with the need to give a primary …

Gtpbp2 Is A Positive Regulator Of Tgf-[Beta] Signaling, And Is Required For Embryonic Patterning In Xenopus, Arif Kirmizitas

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Transforming Growth Factor(TGF-) superfamily of signaling proteins regulate a diverse set of biological processes, including cell proliferation, adhesion, migration, apoptosis, differentiation and embryonic pattern formation. Because of its key role in these processes, a plethora of regulators are evolved to modulate TGF- signaling. The TGF- superfamily is comprised of about 30 ligands, which are commonly grouped into two broad sub-families based on their downstream signaling effectors: the TGF- /Nodal/Activin and BMP/GDF families. To identify novel molecules that regulate the intracellular BMP/Smad1 signaling pathway, we have undertaken a yeast two-hybrid screen using Smad1, and retrieved GTPBP2 as a binding partner …

Changing The Negative Behavioral And Development Outcomes To A Toxic Prenatal Environment Through Maternal Education, Angela Eileen Laughlin Lebedev Dec 2008

Changing The Negative Behavioral And Development Outcomes To A Toxic Prenatal Environment Through Maternal Education, Angela Eileen Laughlin Lebedev

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of current education materials on changing maternal smoking attitudes. Children are affected by prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke. Although there are educational efforts to discourage pregnant women from smoking, the practice continues in a significant number of pregnancies. New materials, based on current research, were also evaluated for effectiveness. The theoretical framework for this study was adult learning theory presented by Knowles which made the assumption that an individual is shaped by environmental systems, that adult learning is affected by previous knowledge they bring to the learning and that adults …

Storage And Utilization Of Hexamerin Proteins In The Pitcher Plant Mosquito, Wyomyia Smithii, Gangadasu E.C.V. Reddy

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The acquisition of hexamerin proteins in the pitcher plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii shows a North-South cline in the southeastern United States. Adult female W. smithii in North Carolina are completely autogenous and larger in size (based on wing length). They are anautogenous in Florida and smaller in size. The adult females in Georgia are intermediate in size with both autogenous and anautogenous behavior. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS- PAGE) of adult female Wyeomyia smithii revealed a specific temporal pattern of utilization of hexamerin proteins for egg protein, vitellogenin, synthesis. W. smithii from North Carolina utilize majority of stored …

Optimal Resource Management In The Presence Of A Deleterious Alien Species: A Stochastic Model For An Orchard, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Peter Nijkamp Dec 2008

Optimal Resource Management In The Presence Of A Deleterious Alien Species: A Stochastic Model For An Orchard, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal, Peter Nijkamp

Articles

Various plants and resources such as orchards are vulnerable to the detrimental effects of successful invasions by alien animal or plant species. To outline an appropriate policy response, we first use renewal theory to construct a stochastic model of optimal orchard management in the presence of a deleterious alien species. Next, we derive the orchard manager’s long run expected cost (LREC) of orchard management per unit time. Finally, we show that when confronted with a successful biological invasion, the optimal number of trees that need to be removed and replanted in order to keep the orchard under study sustainable in …

The Expression And Localization Of Cytoplasmic Polyadenylation Element Binding Proteins In The Retina., Xiangping Wang Dec 2008

The Expression And Localization Of Cytoplasmic Polyadenylation Element Binding Proteins In The Retina., Xiangping Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current status of our knowledge of synaptic plasticity comes largely from studies of the hippocampus and the context of learning and memory. We remain largely ignorant of plasticity in other neural systems and contexts. The molecular basis of plasticity has recently been given new impetus due to the discovery of a local control mechanism which can regulate protein synthesis at stimulated synapses. This involves the use of cytoplasmic polyadenylation binding proteins (CPEBs) to regulate translation. The studies presented here attempt to show that these molecular components are present in the retina, a part of the central nervous system that …

The Consciousness Of Damnation : A Hermeneutical Phenomenology Of The Fall Of The Self In Matthew Lewis's "The Monk"., Becky Lee Meadows Dec 2008

The Consciousness Of Damnation : A Hermeneutical Phenomenology Of The Fall Of The Self In Matthew Lewis's "The Monk"., Becky Lee Meadows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When Ambrosio in Matthew Lewis's 1796 gothic masterpiece, The Monk , signs a contract relegating his soul to Satan and eternal damnation, he has reached the culmination of 442 pages of mental anguish, of his self wrestling with his conscience to overcome what philosopher Paul Ricoeur terms the "servile will" (The Symbolism of Evil 151). In the novel, Ambrosio, a monk the reader discovers has become the pawn of Satan, hurls himself down a path to damnation in consciousness, a phenomenological path that leads to the damnation of his own self. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore this …

Altered Developmental Programming Of The Mouse Mammary Gland In Female Offspring Following Perinatal Dietary Exposures : A Systems-Biology Perspective., Caleb Deen Bastian Dec 2008

Altered Developmental Programming Of The Mouse Mammary Gland In Female Offspring Following Perinatal Dietary Exposures : A Systems-Biology Perspective., Caleb Deen Bastian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mishaps in prenatal development can influence mammary gland development and, ultimately, affect susceptibility to factors that cause breast cancer. This research was based on the underlying hypothesis that maternal dietary composition during pregnancy can alter developmental (fetal) programming of the mammary gland. We used a computational systems-biology approach and Bayesian-based stochastic search variable selection algorithm (SSVS) to identify differentially expressed genes and biological themes and pathways. Postnatal growth trajectories and gene expression in the mammary gland at 10-weeks of age in female mice were investigated following different maternal diet exposures during prenatal-lactational-early-juvenile development. This correlated a decrease in expression of …

Rethinking Social Work's Role In Public Assistance, Julie Cooper Altman, Gertrude Schaffner Goldberg Dec 2008

Rethinking Social Work's Role In Public Assistance, Julie Cooper Altman, Gertrude Schaffner Goldberg

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article presents an argument for revisiting social work's relationship to public assistance in the wake of 10 years of welfare reform. Three case studies drawn from a mixed-method study of the quality of life of former TANF recipients illustrate the range, depth and complexity of the needs of persons while they are on the welfare rolls, transitioning off and living without cash relief. The article briefly traces the history of social work's commitment to and provision of social services for this population and argues that it may be time to revisit the profession's role in public assistance. In light …

Modeling The Relationship Between Air Quality And Intelligent Transportation System (Its) With Artificial Neural Networks., Dinesh Kumar Gupta 1965- Dec 2008

Modeling The Relationship Between Air Quality And Intelligent Transportation System (Its) With Artificial Neural Networks., Dinesh Kumar Gupta 1965-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Environmental or air quality impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are very difficult to measure. Some researchers have attempted to quantify the effects of individual ITS application on emissions; yet, the effects of ITS as a whole on ambient air quality have not been investigated. The objective of this research was to model the relationship between ITS and ambient air quality. The multiple Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) training with the data yielded a model for predicting the air quality. In addition, the ANN made the measurement of the effect of ITS on air quality possible. Data pertaining to sixty US …

The Role Of Hsp90 In Pc-12 Cell Survival., Christina Blume Clark Dec 2008

The Role Of Hsp90 In Pc-12 Cell Survival., Christina Blume Clark

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The chaperone heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) regulates physiologically and pathological cellular processes, by binding and stabilizing kinases involved in basal cellular functions and in cellular responses to stress, respectively. I hypothesize that Hsp90 binding to kinases Akt and Raf-l and to co-chaperone Cdc37 and Akt-dependent phosphorylation of Hsp90 regulate PC-12 cell survival. Hsp90 binding was inhibited using the classical Hsp90 inhibitor, Geldanamycin (GA). Disruption of Hsp90 binding by GA correlated with similar cell death at normoxia (RA) and at 0.1 % O2 sustained hypoxia (SH), suggesting that Hsp90 binding plays a role in cell survival. Indeed, GA cytotoxicity is …
