Patents And Traditional Medicine: Digital Capture, Creative Legal Interventions And The Dialectics Of Knowledge Transformation, Chidi Oguamanam Jul 2008

Patents And Traditional Medicine: Digital Capture, Creative Legal Interventions And The Dialectics Of Knowledge Transformation, Chidi Oguamanam

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article examines the debate over the exclusion of indigenous or local knowledge forms from the global intellectual property system, and some of the current attempts to solve this problem. Using the lens of cultural cosmopolitanism, the article highlights important trends in the dialectics of developing countries' engagement with intellectual property and other collateral knowledge protection systems. The three sites at which this significant development is unfolding are: (1) the digitization of traditional medicinal knowledge through India's traditional knowledge digital library (TKDL) project; (2) a recent attempt at incorporating innovations in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) in Taiwanese patent law; and …

Anti-Inflammatory Activity Of The Methanolic Extract Of Cinnamomum Sulphuratum Barks, Muthiah Maridass

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

In the present study, anti-inflammatory activity of the methanolic extract of Cinnamomum sulphuratum bark was investigated in Albino rats for carrageenan induced rat hind paw oedema using in vivo experimental animal model. A 200 mg dose of extract inhibited 71.43% of the carrageenan-induced oedema formation, while Ibuprofen inhibited 70.23%. The extract showed dose dependent anti-inflammatory activity, which was found to be statistically significant at p < 0.001%.

El Virus De La Diarrea Viral En Bovinos Criollos De La Provincia De Melgar, Puno, Q. Richard Quispe, Ccama Albert S., Hermelinda G. Rivera, Mariluz Araínga

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

The prevalence of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection in 347 evaluated was criollo cattle of both sexes and older than 6 months of age in small herds of the province of Melgar, Puno. Serum samples were tested for antibodies against BVDV using the viral neutralization test. The 48.7 ± 0.1% (166/347) of the samples had antibodies against BVDV. Animals carrying on the virus, virus were not detected. Antibodies were detected in all sampled herds and the prevalence varied from 15.7 to 94.1%. Antibodies titers varied from 2 to >256, showing that BVDV infection is widespread in the local cattle …

Visible Versus Near-Infrared Light Penetration Depth Analysis In An Intralipid Suspension As It Relates To Clinical Hyperspectral Images, Tinsy John Perumanoor

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

We determine the penetration depth of near-infrared and visible light in a tissue phantom model using various image processing techniques and chemometrics and use these results to demonstrate the application of a multimodal hyperspectral imaging system for monitoring blood perfusion in amputation wounds. It is capable of performing a noninvasive, in vivo, quantitative analysis of human tissue in a clinical environment, in terms of the percent saturation of oxyhemoglobin. The instrument majorly consists of near-infrared and visible charge coupled devices (CCDs), lenses, liquid crystal tunable filters (LCTFs) for both the CCDs attached to their respective lenses, and a broad band …

A Possible Role For Spla2 In Oligodendrocyte Death And Spinal Cord Injury., William Lee Titsworth Jul 2008

A Possible Role For Spla2 In Oligodendrocyte Death And Spinal Cord Injury., William Lee Titsworth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be divided into two distinct stages, an initial mechanical impact and a later "secondary injury" resulting from a cascade of cytokines triggering a spreading demyelination and apoptosis of neurons and glia within the spinal cord. It is believed that blockade of this "secondary injury" could improve functional and histological recovery following SCI. Here we propose that sPLA2 might be one of the crucial mediators of the secondary injury. To test this possibility we first elucidated that the mRNA and protein of several isozymes of sPLA2 are present in the rodent spinal cord and that the …

Using Metaphors In Dynamic Social Stratification Visualizations, Michael B. Gousie, John Grady, Ben Burrage, Robbie Grossman, David Machado, Sarah Milewski, Christopher S. Stuetzle Jul 2008

Using Metaphors In Dynamic Social Stratification Visualizations, Michael B. Gousie, John Grady, Ben Burrage, Robbie Grossman, David Machado, Sarah Milewski, Christopher S. Stuetzle

Computer and Data Science Faculty Publications

We present three information visualizations for studying social stratification. Each Web-based applet uses a different metaphor to display U.S. Census income data along with the categories of race, marital status, and profession. Each system is completely dynamic, affording the user the choice of categorical variable to compare, as well as the choice of categories within each visualization. Two different user interfaces have also been implemented. The systems are described, compared, and their respective merits and deficiencies discussed.

Review Of Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life And Legend Of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. By Art T. Burton, Amy E. Carreiro Jul 2008

Review Of Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life And Legend Of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. By Art T. Burton, Amy E. Carreiro

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Art T. Burton's study of African American lawman Bass Reeves contributes to the growing body of work on the black experience in the West. Burton does a fine job of sorting through the fact and fiction surrounding the marshal's career. Although an engaging character, a fulllength study of the marshal did not exist until now. Burton's Black Gun, Silver Star provides insight into the place of race in the Southern Plains in the late 1800s. Burton argues that the significant number of black federal law enforcement agents in Indian Territory "was truly unusual in American history."

Reeves's "accomplishments are all …

Review Of Art Of The Cherokee: Prehistory To The Present By Susan C. Power, Mary Jo Watson Jul 2008

Review Of Art Of The Cherokee: Prehistory To The Present By Susan C. Power, Mary Jo Watson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Native American art history concerning Southeastern and Oklahoma Indian art is enhanced by Susan Power's ambitious book on Cherokee art. Its wide historic and artistic focus spans from the sixteenth century through transitional phases including European contact, removal, revival, and contemporary art. Power locates the Cherokees within the older Mississippian mound culture throughout the Tennessee Valley and North Carolina and provides examples of early sites where surviving pottery, beads, gorgets, rattles, painting, weaving, and sculpture indicate an interest in both utility and aesthetics. Early Cherokee arts demonstrate concern with color, form, design, patterns, and symbolism; and there is evidence that …

Land, Speculation, And Manipulation On The Pecos, Stephen Bogener Jul 2008

Land, Speculation, And Manipulation On The Pecos, Stephen Bogener

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The Pecos River of the nineteenth century, unlike its faint twenty-first century shadow, was a formidable watercourse. The river stretches some 755 miles, from the Sangre de Cristo Mountains northeast of Santa Fe to its eventual merger with the Rio Grande. Control over the public domain of southeastern New Mexico came from controlling access to the Pecos, its tributaries and springs. In the arid environment of New Mexico's Pecos Valley, corporate accumulation of land through manipulation of federal land laws followed the removal of Native Americans, the displacement of Mexican American communities, and the departure of major players in the …

Why The Homesteading Data Are So Poor (And What Can Be Done About It), Richard Edwards Jul 2008

Why The Homesteading Data Are So Poor (And What Can Be Done About It), Richard Edwards

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Data available to scholars on homesteading are of very poor quality-inconsistent, unreliable, inaccessible, incomplete-and surprisingly, they haven't been getting any better. Even basic questions such as how much homesteaded land was "proved up," how much land was commuted, or how many actual farms were created by homesteading cannot be answered with any assurance. Moreover, the answers given today mostly depend on quantitative studies completed forty or more years ago.

Why should this be? After all, we have witnessed in recent decades a staggering increase in the capacity and convenience of data handling by using computers. The publication of the Historical …

Victorian Tort Liability For Workplace Injuries, Michael Ashley Stein Jul 2008

Victorian Tort Liability For Workplace Injuries, Michael Ashley Stein

Faculty Publications

The first decision of an injured worker suing his master for a workplace accident was reported in 1837, the year of Queen Victoria's ascension. The second Workman's Compensation Act, a comprehensive social insurance scheme, was passed in 1900, a few months before her death. The Article provides an initial account of the development of employers' liability to their servants for work-related injuries during the Victorian era. It demonstrates that English judges, and especially the Barons of the Exchequer, interpreted the law to resist employers' liability. The means these judges used included creating the defence of common employment, widely applying the …
