Intellectual Property Rights And Global Warming, Estaelle Derclaye Jul 2008

Intellectual Property Rights And Global Warming, Estaelle Derclaye

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Global warming is an issue that is everywhere in today's society. This article examines whether intellectual property rights could be the solution to the global warming problem. The article limits its discussion to patent and copyright law and explores solutions to global warming that are applicable in Europe. The author suggests that these recommendations could influence other countries to make their intellectual property rights greener, as intellectual property rights are based on international instruments and universal agreements that could apply in any country. The article examines how current copyright and patent laws already tackle global warming and explains how these …

Geographical Indications: A Discussion On The Trips Regulation After The Ministerial Conference Of Hong Kong, Stefania Fusco Jul 2008

Geographical Indications: A Discussion On The Trips Regulation After The Ministerial Conference Of Hong Kong, Stefania Fusco

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Despite the strides the TRIPs Agreement made to protect Geographical Indications (GIs), considerable debate persists on how to further TRIPs' goals in that area. First, while some countries ally themselves with the European Union on maintaining a multilateral register for GIs, others follow the United States' preference for a voluntary database. Controversy also surrounds whether to extend the more expansive protections on wines and spirits to other products. Finally, the European Union has launched a staunchly opposed campaign to recover the exclusive use of a number of GIs, including many that have become generic names for their associated products. This …

Effects Of Early Gestation Gh Administration On Placental And Fetal Development In Sheep., Casey D Wright, Ryan J Orbus, Timothy Regnault, Russell V Anthony

Paediatrics Publications

Ovine GH (oGH) is synthesized in placental tissue during maximal placental growth and development. Our objectives were to localize oGH mRNA in the placenta, and study the impact of exogenous GH on twin pregnancies during the normal window (35-55 days of gestational age; dGA) of placental expression. In situ hybridization localized oGH mRNA in uterine luminal epithelium but not in tissues of fetal origin. While maternal GH and IGF-I concentrations were increased (P

Teaching About Peace Through Children’S Literature, Stan F. Steiner

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Historically children's literature has always been used as a teaching tool with children, but today the choices of literature has grown and the audience expanded. Teaching moral messages was an underlying foundation for making books available for children. Early children's books were often tied to religious teachings and folklore that had implied messages of staying close to home, listening to elders, caring for others over oneself, and traditional gender roles to name a few. Many adults have identified other subliminal messages as they critically analyzed some of the literature from the past. Some messages you will find are passive women …

Integrated Science Assessment For Oxides Of Nitrogen — Health Criteria, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Jul 2008

Integrated Science Assessment For Oxides Of Nitrogen — Health Criteria, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) are promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to meet requirements set forth in Sections 108 and 109 of the Clean Air Act (CAA). These sections require the EPA Administrator (1) to list widespread air pollutants that reasonably may be expected to endanger public health or welfare; (2) to issue air quality criteria that assess the latest available scientific information on the nature and effects of ambient exposure to the criteria pollutants; (3) to set “primary” NAAQS to protect human health with adequate margin of safety and to set “secondary” NAAQS to protect …

Diel Variation In Beaked Whale Diving Behavior, Robin Baird, Daniel Webster, Gregory Schorr, Daniel Mcsweeney, Jay Barlow Jul 2008

Diel Variation In Beaked Whale Diving Behavior, Robin Baird, Daniel Webster, Gregory Schorr, Daniel Mcsweeney, Jay Barlow

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We investigate diel variation in beaked whale diving behavior using data from time–depth recorders deployed on six Blainville’s (Mesoplodon densirostris) (255 h) and two Cuvier’s (Ziphius cavirostris) (34 h) beaked whales. Deep foraging dives (>800 m) occurred at similar rates during the day and night for Blainville’s beaked whales, and there were no significant diel differences in ascent rates, descent rates, or mean or maximum depths or durations for deep dives. Dive to mid-water depths (100–600 m) occurred significantly more often during the day (mean = 1.59 h−1) than at night (mean = 0.26 h−1). …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Despite their world-wide distribution throughout the tropics and subtropics, false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) are one of the lesser-known large odontocetes. Genetic evidence indicates a demographically isolated population around the main Hawaiian Islands. We examine site fidelity, movements and association patterns in this population using data from directed surveys and opportunistic photographs from 1986 to 2007. This species was only infrequently encountered, and while found in depths from 38 to 4,331 m, sighting rates were greatest in depths>3,000 m. We photo-identified 152 distinctive individuals. Resighting rates were high, with an average of 76.8% of distinctive individuals within …

Bilayer Interactions Of Phlip, A Peptide That Can Deliver Drugs And Target Tumors, Manuela Zoonens, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Donald M. Engelman Jul 2008

Bilayer Interactions Of Phlip, A Peptide That Can Deliver Drugs And Target Tumors, Manuela Zoonens, Yana K. Reshetnyak, Donald M. Engelman

Physics Faculty Publications

The pH-dependent insertion of pHLIP across membranes is proving to be a useful property for targeting acidic tissues or tumors and delivering drugs attached to its C-terminus. It also serves as a model peptide for studies of protein insertion into membranes, so further elucidation of the insertion mechanism of pHLIP and its features is desirable. We examine how the peptide perturbs a model phosphatidylcholine membrane and how it associates with the lipid bilayer using an array of fluorescence techniques, including fluorescence anisotropy measurements of TMA-DPH anchored in bilayers, quenching of pHLIP fluorescence by brominated lipids and acrylamide, and measurements of …

Imsa360: Summer 2008, Imsa Fund

IMSA Fund Reports

Often when I speak to parents, students and educators, I share one of my core beliefs: there is no ceiling on human potential. Though perhaps a bit overstated, as I fully realize my limited singing ability elicits monumental groans and sends animals scurrying for cover, it is true that often when we think an individual has reached his or her “potential,” we are astounded by a new accomplishment. As I look back on my first year as IMSA’s second president, I am humbled and amazed by IMSA’s truly unlimited potential for advancing the human condition and living into our aspiration …

Eastern Temperate North Pacific Offshore Killer Whales (Orcinus Orca): Occurrence, Movements, And Insights Into Feeding Ecology, Marilyn Dalheim, Alisa Schulman-Janiger, Nancy Black, Richard Ternullo, Dave Ellifrit, Kenneth Balcomb Iii

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Beginning in the late 1980s, large groups of previously unidentified killer whales (Orcinus orca) were sighted off the west coast of Vancouver Island and in the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. Scientists working in this region produced two killer whale photo-identification catalogues that included both transient (mammal-eating) whales and 65 individual whales that investigators believed represented a distinct killer whale community (Ford et al. 1992, Heise et al. 1993). It was thought that these killer whales maintained a generally offshore distribution and were provisionally termed “offshores”; a term that has since been used as a population identifier for …

A Microcosm Of The Biomedical Research Experience For Upper-Level Undergraduates, Daryl D. Hurd Jul 2008

A Microcosm Of The Biomedical Research Experience For Upper-Level Undergraduates, Daryl D. Hurd

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

The skill set required of biomedical researchers continues to grow and evolve as biology matures as a natural science. Science necessitates creative yet critical thinking, persuasive communication skills, purposeful use of time, and adeptness at the laboratory bench. Teaching these skills can be effectively accomplished in an inquiry-based, active-learning environment at a primarily undergraduate institution. Cell Biology Techniques, an upper-level cell biology laboratory course at St. John Fisher College, features two independent projects that take advantage of the biology of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a premier yet simple model organism. First, students perform a miniature epigenetic screen for novel phenotypes …

An Uphill Battle: Incorporating Cooperative Learning Using A Largely Individualized Curriculum, Anna Anderson Jul 2008

An Uphill Battle: Incorporating Cooperative Learning Using A Largely Individualized Curriculum, Anna Anderson

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my classroom of 8th grade mathematics, I investigated if cooperative learning could be an effective teaching method with the Saxon curriculum. Saxon curriculum is largely individualized in that most lessons could be completed without much group interaction. I discovered that cooperative learning was very successful with the curriculum as long as it was structured. Ninety-five percent of the students in the study preferred to work in groups, and I observed mathematical communication grow with most of the students. As a result of this research, I plan to continue to incorporate cooperative learning into my …

From Dürer To Van Gogh: Gifts From Eliza Greene Radeke And Helen Metcalf Danforth, Emily J. Peters

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 30, Summer 2008.The Museum of Art was founded simultaneously with the Rhode Island School of Design in 1877 by a group of women led by Eliza Radeke's mother, Helen Adelia Rowe (Mrs. Jesse) Metcalf. RISD’s stated purpose was to educate artists in drawing, painting, modeling, and design for the benefit of industry and art, and to educate the public so that they could appreciate and support art and design. The creation of a museum collection was inseparable from these objectives. Both Eliza Radeke and Helen Danforth, as heirs to those aspirations, made extraordinary individual gifts to …

Ardi: A Co-Construction Method For Participatory Modelling In Natural Resources Management, Michel Etienne, D. Du Toit, S. Pollard

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The outcomes of a series of tests of the ARDI (Actors, Resources, Dynamics and Interactions) method in complex cases or conflict-ridden situations is presented. ARDI is part of a companion modelling approach that makes it possible to engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the design and development of land and water management plans. It is essentially based on participatory workshops that set out to collaboratively imagine a future open, dynamic management system, capable of adaptation and anticipation, by gathering the various affected stakeholders in a partnership dedicated to preserving the natural resources and promoting a sustainable development. Its originality …

Identifying State Variables In Multivariate Hydrological Time Series Using Time Series Knowledge Mining, O. Gronz, M. C. Casper, P. Gemmar

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The challenge of modeling rainfall-runoff processes is to define a suitable functional relationship between input variables representing precipitation measurements and the output runoff. Depending on the system’s state, the amount of precipitation resulting in direct flow varies strongly. Thus, state variables indicating the system’s actual state can enhance the accuracy of rainfall-runoff models significantly. Fuzzy models of Takagi-Sugeno-type are one of the effective approaches to simulate rainfall-runoff processes regarding the different system states. The design of a fuzzy rainfall-runoff model consists of two essential steps: the definition of the structure (input quantities, state variables, rules) and the identification of parameters …

A Multiscale Air Quality Forecast System For Europe And Selected Regions, H. Jakobs, M. Memmesheimer, E. Friese, A. Ebel

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A real-time forecast system for atmospheric pollutants is presented. The airquality forecast system is based on the EURAD Model (European Air Pollution DispersionModel). The daily updated forecast of atmospheric constituents is operational sinceNovember 2001. The chemistry transport model EURAD calculates the transport, transformation and deposition of atmospheric constituents for a period of 72 hours on adaily basis. Major products of the AQ forecast system are the atmospheric pollutants O3,NO2, SO2, CO, PM10 and benzene. An intensive effort is done to carry out a verificationprocedure of the model forecast using observational data from the German EnvironmentalAgency (UBA) monitoring network. Examples of major …

Integrated Modelling Of Water And Nitrate Fluxes In Large Catchment Areas – Assessing The Needs And Efficiencies Of Agroenvironmental Measures For Selected Groundwater Bodies In Germany., R. Kunkel, M. Eisele, Björn Tetzlaff, Frank Wendland

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Within the EU-Life project WAgriCo (Water Resources Management in Cooperation with Agriculture) nitrogen management options adapted to hydrological and agro-economic site properties are developed and implemented for three pilot areas in the Federal State of Lower Saxony using new participation approaches and technologies suitable for programmes of measures to reduce diffuse pollution from agriculture. As a target value for water protection measures a nitrate concentration in percolation water of 50 mg/l as an average for groundwater bodies and their hydrogeological subdivisions has been defined. An integrative emission model is used to simulate the interactions between agricultural practice, nitrogen surpluses and …
