Nectar Secondary Compounds Affect Self-Pollen Transfer: Implications For Female And Male Reproduction, Rebecca E. Irwin, Lynn S. Adler
Nectar Secondary Compounds Affect Self-Pollen Transfer: Implications For Female And Male Reproduction, Rebecca E. Irwin, Lynn S. Adler
Dartmouth Scholarship
Pollen movement within and among plants affects inbreeding, plant fitness, and the spatial scale of genetic differentiation. Although a number of studies have assessed how plant and floral traits influence pollen movement via changes in pollinator behavior, few have explored how nectar chemical composition affects pollen transfer. As many as 55% of plants produce secondary compounds in their nectar, which is surprising given that nectar is typically thought to attract pollinators. We tested the hypothesis that nectar with secondary compounds may benefit plants by encouraging pollinators to leave plants after visiting only a few flowers, thus reducing self-pollen transfer. We …

Infectious Keratitis Associated With Contact Lens Use, Misty Dawn Harvey
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In March 2006, ophthalmologists noticed increased Fusarium keratitis in patients wearing soft contact lenses; the etiology was that of Fusarium solani. By May of 2006, CDC reported receiving a total of 130 confirmed cases of Fusarium keratitis across 26 states and one territory; of the 118 who could identify the lens solution they had used, 64% reported using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with Moistureloc ©,while 18% reported using only non-Bausch & Lomb products. The association between Fusarium keratitis and ReNu with Moistureloc was not clear. Nevertheless, Bausch & Lomb withdrew Moistureloc solutions worldwide. In earlier laboratory tests using standard methods …
Evaluation Of A Wildlife Education Exhibit For Youth, Amy L. Carrozzino, Sanford S. Smith
Evaluation Of A Wildlife Education Exhibit For Youth, Amy L. Carrozzino, Sanford S. Smith
Journal of Extension
Understanding the ability of educational exhibits to communicate information effectively is important in all Extension programs. We evaluated the influence of a table-top exhibit entitled "Threats to Pennsylvania's Wildlife." In fair and classroom settings, participants in grades 5-7 (N=698) were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups. One group participated in a pre- and post-survey; the other completed only a post-survey after viewing the exhibit. Results demonstrate that table-top exhibits are useful in conveying basic information and facilitating learning; however, the overall effectiveness of this exhibit was only about 10% and may have been influenced by additional confounding factors.

Cattle Code: Coproduct Optimizer Decision Evaluator, Crystal D. Buckner, Darrell R. Mark, Virgil R. Bremer, Galen E. Erickson
Journal of Extension
Expansion of the corn-based ethanol industry in recent years has resulted in a growing supply of coproduct feeds. These coproducts result in significant improvements in cattle performance and are often priced lower than corn on a dry matter basis. Along with these benefits to feeding ethanol coproduct feeds, cattle feeders must also account for additional transportation costs to originate the coproducts and for added expenses to handle, mix, and deliver the feed ration within the feedlot. An economic budget model, called Cattle CODE, was created to help feeders, nutritionists, and Extension educators evaluate these nonlinear effects across unique feeding situations.

Mucosal Immunity In Toxoplasma Gondii Infection, J. Schulthess, D. Fourreau, S. Darche, B. Meresse, L. Kasper, N. Cerf-Bensussan, D. Buzoni-Gatel
Dartmouth Scholarship
Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that frequently infects a large spectrum of warm-blooded animals. This parasite induces abortion and establishes both chronic and silent infections, particularly in the brain. Parasite penetration into the host activates a strong anti-parasite immune response. In the present paper, we will discuss the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity that occurs within the infected intestine to clear the parasite and to maintain intestinal homeostasis despite the exacerbation of an inflammatory immune response.

The Gap Analysis Program: A Proactive Approach To Biodiversity Conservation, John D. Gerlach Ii, G Jason Jolley
Journal of Extension
This article introduces Extension professionals to the U.S. Geological Survey's Gap Analysis Program (GAP). GAP seeks to inform the natural resource policy process by providing land cover, stewardship, and species distribution data to decision makers. GAP data may be used to make land use decisions at different geographic levels. GAP aims to address biodiversity conservation in a proactive manner, paying unique attention to the protection of common species and their habitats. Extension professionals may also find GAP data helpful in education and outreach programs designed to inform the public of the role individuals can play in biodiversity maintenance.
Body Burden Of Pahs And Cardiovascular Disease In The United States, John D. Clark Iii
Body Burden Of Pahs And Cardiovascular Disease In The United States, John D. Clark Iii
Open Access Dissertations
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental and occupational carcinogens that are produced by the incomplete combustion of organic material, such as from the burning of tobacco, coal, and petroleum products. In addition to causing cancer, exposure to PAHs is hypothesized to contribute to atherosclerosis and to lead to increased incidence rates of cardiovascular disease in populations. Considering the number of deaths attributable to tobacco smoke exposure, ambient air pollution, and occupational hazards, PAHs may be a significant contributor to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in human populations. However, a clear exposure-response relationship between PAHs and measures of cardiovascular disease has …

Exploring The Cognitive Underpinnings Of Word Retrieval Deficits In Dyslexia Using The Tip-Of-The-Tongue Paradigm, Sarah Margaret Hanly
Exploring The Cognitive Underpinnings Of Word Retrieval Deficits In Dyslexia Using The Tip-Of-The-Tongue Paradigm, Sarah Margaret Hanly
Dissertations
Over the past thirty years a consensus has emerged that the word reading difficulties of dyslexic readers stem from deficits in phonological processing. One experimental paradigm that has provided support for this view is the finding that dyslexic readers demonstrate deficits in word retrieval from long term memory on picture naming tasks. Dyslexic readers are able to retrieve fewer words in their receptive vocabularies and are less accurate than normally developing readers. However, the conclusion that dyslexic readers? difficulties in picture naming are the consequence of deficits in phonological processing is inferential. The current study uses the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) paradigm …
The Impact Of Gender Socialization On Women?S Learned Technological Helplessness And Its Andragogical Implications, Joy Elise Harris
The Impact Of Gender Socialization On Women?S Learned Technological Helplessness And Its Andragogical Implications, Joy Elise Harris
Dissertations
This research investigated a proposed construct of learned technological helplessness (LTH) in female adult learners, which is believed to be impacted by socialization into traditional gender roles, teacher modeling, and age. A two-pronged approach was used to examine women?s attitudes and beliefs about their abilities to use technology as a learning and personal productivity tool. Participants were females, over age 18, on two campuses of a public Midwest research university. Prior to the primary research, a pilot study (n=204) was undertaken for the purpose of creating a teacher modeling instrument, which measured how teachers model the use of technology. The …

Online Travel Information Search Behaviors: An Information Foraging Perspective, Evan Jordan
Online Travel Information Search Behaviors: An Information Foraging Perspective, Evan Jordan
All Theses
Information search has been a topic of research for a multitude of studies across
several fields, including travel and tourism. However, information search on the internet,
especially in travel and tourism, has rarely been examined. As a result, this research was
undertaken to explore travel information search behaviors on the Internet.
This thesis uses information foraging theory (Pirolli & Card, 1999) as a basis to
examine online travel information search behaviors. In addition, other established
measures of online information search (Hodkinson, Kiel, & McColl-Kennedy, 2000)
were used to supplement findings based upon information foraging theory. Groups of
students from two …
Endocrine And Follicular Dynamics During The Perideviation Period In Cattle, Morgan Krause
Endocrine And Follicular Dynamics During The Perideviation Period In Cattle, Morgan Krause
All Theses
Ovarian hyperstimulation used in conjunction with embryo transfer techniques is an assisted reproductive technology that aids cattle producers in reaching their reproductive, genetic, and financial goals; however, viable embryo recovery results are inconsistent, possibly because the reproductive endocrine profile is poorly understood. The objective of these experiments was to evaluate the endocrinological and ovarian dynamics surrounding follicular deviation in hyperstimulated cows.
In Experiment 1, the perideviation period (PDP; largest follicle diameter from 8 - 10- mm) was examined in Hyperstimulated (50 mg FSH) or Control (saline) dry Holstein cows (n = 4 / group). Daily blood samples began at the …

An Experiment Analysis Of The Impact Of Advertising And Food Packaging On Women's Eating Behavior, Amy S. Collings
An Experiment Analysis Of The Impact Of Advertising And Food Packaging On Women's Eating Behavior, Amy S. Collings
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Obesity is considered a national epidemic and is associated with increased eating behavior and decreased physical activity. Research has demonstrated biological underpinnings, but the dramatic increase in prevalence rates in recent decades (Flegal et al., 2002) suggests that environmental influences also contribute (Hill et al., 2008). This led researchers to speculate about the impact of our purported “Toxic Environment,” in which high-calorie, energy-dense foods are readily available for consumption and technological advances have decreased physical activity (Wadden et al., 2002). Most of the literature examining the theory of the Toxic Environment is correlational in nature, limiting causal inference. A pilot …

Fracture Of Supracondylar Process Of The Humerus, S S. Suresh
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
The supracondylar process of the humerus is a rare skeletal anomaly, which is usually an incidental finding while an X-ray is done for some other purpose. The process can fracture resulting in pain and tender mobile swelling over the medial aspect of the arm, and consequent neurovascular symptoms, or entrapment neuropathies. The anomaly, which fractured in a clinical situation, is described, followed by a review of the literature.
Prenatal Alcohol: Effect On Depression And Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Levels, Mary Laughlin, Andrea Allan
Prenatal Alcohol: Effect On Depression And Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Bdnf) Levels, Mary Laughlin, Andrea Allan
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Fetal alcohol exposure poses a significant social problem. Conservative rates of Fetal alcohol syndrome and Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorders (ARND) together have been estimated at 9.1/1000 live births (Sampson 1997). Prenatal ethanol exposure can produce subtle learning disabilities in children, which may not become apparent until a child is school-aged and can occur in the absence of other physical evidence of alcohol-related birth defects. Along with cognitive deficits, ARND has been associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has been linked to polymorphisms in the Brian Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) …

Prevalence And Infection Load Dynamics Of Rickettsia Felis In Actively Feeding Cat Fleas, Kathryn E. Reif, Rhett W. Stout, Gretchen C. Henry, Lane D. Foil, Kevin R. Macaluso
Faculty Publications
Background: Rickettsia felis is a flea-associated rickettsial pathogen recurrently identified in both colonized and wild-caught cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis. We hypothesized that within colonized fleas, the intimate relationship between R. felis and C. felis allows for the coordination of rickettsial replication and metabolically active periods during flea bloodmeal acquisition and oogenesis. Methodology/Principal Findings: a quantitative real-time PCR assay was developed to quantify R. felis in actively feeding R. felis-infected fleas. In three separate trials, fleas were allowed to feed on cats, and a mean of 3.9 × 106 R. felis 17-kDa gene copies was detected for each flea. A distinct …
