A General Framework For The Analysis Of Animal Resource Selection From Telemetry Data, Devin S. Johnson, Dana L. Thomas, Jay M. Ver Hoef, Aaron Christ Sep 2008

A General Framework For The Analysis Of Animal Resource Selection From Telemetry Data, Devin S. Johnson, Dana L. Thomas, Jay M. Ver Hoef, Aaron Christ

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We propose a general framework for the analysis of animal telemetry data through the use of weighted distributions. It is shown that several interpretations of resource selection functions arise when constructed from the ratio of a use and availability distribution. Through the proposed general framework, several popular resource selection models are shown to be special cases of the general model by making assumptions about animal movement and behavior. The weighted distribution framework is shown to be easily extended to readily account for telemetry data that are highly auto-correlated; as is typical with use of new technology such as global positioning …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Buggy Creek virus (BCRV) is an unusual arbovirus within the western equine encephalitis complex of alphaviruses. Associated with cimicid swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius) as its vector and the cliff swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and house sparrow (Passer domesticus) as its amplifying hosts, this virus is found primarily in the western Great Plains of North America at spatially discrete swallow nesting colonies. For 342 isolates collected in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, and North Dakota, from 1974 to 2007, we sequenced a 2076 bp region of the 26S subgenomic RNA structural glycoprotein coding region, and analyzed phylogenetic relationships, …

Spatial Welfare Impacts Of A Grain Ethanol Plant, Justin Van Wart, Richard K. Perrin Sep 2008

Spatial Welfare Impacts Of A Grain Ethanol Plant, Justin Van Wart, Richard K. Perrin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This study inquires into the spatial welfare impacts of a grain ethanol plant established in an area with a beef feeding industry. Corn producers will benefit, but by how much? Why do plants seem to price their animal feed byproduct so low that beef producers may benefit from lower feed costs, despite the higher corn price? Why do ethanol plants in some areas dry all their byproduct feed while in other areas plants sell it all in wet form? How are these outcomes affected by the density of corn production, by the density of feedlots, and by the size of …

Ethnobotanical Applications Of Some Floral Species In Bayelsa State, Nigeria, Gordian Chibuzo Obute, Ebiare Ekiye Sep 2008

Ethnobotanical Applications Of Some Floral Species In Bayelsa State, Nigeria, Gordian Chibuzo Obute, Ebiare Ekiye

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The focal point of this study was documentation of indigenous uses/knowledge of the thinning populations of the valuable flora in parts of the Niger Delta. Forty-eight plant species belonging to twenty-four taxonomic families were found to have various ethnobotanical applications among the indigenous people of Bayelsa State. Some of these still enter the local economy through the services provided by the products. Harvesting of flora for these purposes was observed to be unsustainable because of lack or presence of weak institutional and legal framework and enforcement for sustainability. This study also highlights the implications of forest fragmentation and over harvesting …

Sex- And Gonad-Affecting Scent Compounds And 3 Male Pheromones In The Rat, Jian-Xu Zhang, Lixing Sun, Jin-Hua Zhang, Zhi-Yong Feng

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

This study was aimed at identifying sex pheromones of the rat (Rattus norvegicus). We characterized the volatiles and semivolatiles of rat preputial gland and voided urine by using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and quantified them by their GC areas (abundances) and percentage of GC areas (relative abundances). Although all the compounds other than 4-heptanone and phenol detected were shared by males and females, the quantities for some of these sex-common compounds exhibited sexual dimorphism and decreased with gonadectomy. Thus, these compounds might be sex pheromones. Among them, squalene from preputial glands and 2-heptanone and 4-ethyl phenol from urine …

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A Financial Times news brief lay buried in an inside page: At the very moment a few weeks ago when Olympic medals were awarded in front of adoring crowds, “two elderly women” were jailed for seeking permission to demonstrate against “being forcibly evicted from their Beijing homes” back in 2001. And who knows what now stands in the place of these pensioners’ loss – faux Italianate villas? an IKEA? pavement?

Stories like this make a timely book of journalist Jasper Becker’s history of the Chinese capital, City of Heavenly Tranquility: Beijing in the History of China from Oxford University Press …

Cryptosporidium Outbreak (Water Treatment Failure): North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Spring 2001, Patrick B. Jameson, Yung-Tse Hung, Chin Y. Kuo, Paul A. Bosela

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

An outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred in the town of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada in the spring of 2001. The outbreak left thousands of people sick including about 50 people hospitalized. The source of the outbreak was from the city's surface water treatment plant. The Sedimentation Contact Unit did not satisfactorily remove suspended solids from the source water, resulting in filter breakthrough. Contaminated water was released into the distribution system causing the outbreak. Communication breakdown and confusion exacerbated the situation, extending the duration of the outbreak. The outbreak prompted the province to change the way it regulated municipal utilities of water …
