Application Of Shortest-Path Network Analysis To Identify Genes That Modulate Longevity In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jr Managbanag
Application Of Shortest-Path Network Analysis To Identify Genes That Modulate Longevity In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jr Managbanag
Theses and Dissertations
Shortest-path network analysis was employed to identify novel genes that modulate longevity in the baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Based upon a set of previously reported genes associated with increased life span, a shortest path network algorithm was applied to a pre-existing protein-protein interaction dataset in order to construct a shortest-path longevity network. To validate this network, the replicative aging potential of 88 single gene deletion strains corresponding to predicted components of the shortest path longevity network was determined. The 88 single-gene deletion strains identified by a network approach are significantly enriched for mutation conferring both increased and decreased replicative life …

Differential Loss Of Embryonic Globin Genes During The Radiation Of Placental Mammals, Juan C. Opazo, Federico Hoffmann, Jay F. Storz
Differential Loss Of Embryonic Globin Genes During The Radiation Of Placental Mammals, Juan C. Opazo, Federico Hoffmann, Jay F. Storz
Jay F. Storz Publications
The differential gain and loss of genes from homologous gene families represents an important source of functional variation among the genomes of different species. Differences in gene content between species are primarily attributable to lineage-specific gene gains via duplication and lineage-specific losses via deletion or inactivation. Here, we use a comparative genomic approach to investigate this process of gene turnover in the β-globin gene family of placental mammals. By analyzing genomic sequence data from representatives of each of the main superordinal clades of placental mammals, we were able to reconstruct pathways of gene family evolution during the basal radiation of …

The Resilience Of Law, Joseph Vining
The Resilience Of Law, Joseph Vining
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
The development of "law and economics" over the last half-century has expanded and reinforced a perception among academic lawyers that law itself is a social science. During the same period social science has moved closer to the discipline of natural science and the presuppositions and methods of its thought and work. This essay explores why law is not and cannot be a social science, and why there are grounds for hope in a future for democracy grounded in the rule of law.
Response To Changes In Key Stimuli Through The Co-Evolution Of Sensor Morphology And Control, Gary Parker, Pramod J. Nathan
Response To Changes In Key Stimuli Through The Co-Evolution Of Sensor Morphology And Control, Gary Parker, Pramod J. Nathan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Co-evolving a robot’s sensor morphology and control program increases the potential that it can effectively complete its tasks and provides a means for adapting to changes in the environment. In previous work, we presented a learning system where the angle, range, and type of sensors on a hexapod robot, along with the control program, were evolved. Although three sensor stimuli were detectable by the system, it used only two due to the relative importance of these two stimuli in completing the task. In the research presented in this paper, we used the same system, but reduced the availability of a …

Identification of a reliable marker of skeletal precursor cells within calcified and soft tissues remains a major challenge for the field. To address this, we used a transgenic model in which osteoblasts can be eliminated by pharmacological treatment. Following osteoblast ablation a dramatic increase in a population of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) positive cells was observed. During early recovery phase from ablation we have detected cells with the simultaneous expression of SMAA and a preosteoblastic 3.6GFP marker, indicating the potential for transition of α-SMA+ cells towards osteoprogenitor lineage. Utilizing α-SMAGFP transgene, α-SMAGFP+ positive cells were detected in the …

Teriparatide (1-34 Human Pth) Regulation Of Osterix During Fracture Repair, Do Y. Soung, Graziello Geneau, Hicham Drissi
UCHC Articles - Research
Based on remarkable success of PTH as an anabolic drug for osteoporosis, case reports of off-label use of teriparatide (1-34 PTH) in patients with complicated fractures and non-unions are emerging. We investigated the mechanisms underlying PTH accelerated fracture repair. Bone marrow cells from 7 days 40cg/kg of teriparatide treated or saline control mice were cultured and Osx and osteoblast phenotypic gene expression assessed by real time RT-PCR in these cells. Fractured animals injected daily with either saline or 40cg/kg of teriparatide for up to 21 days were X-rayed and histological assessment performed, as well as immunohistochemical analyses of the Osx …
Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith
Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
A comprehensive literature review and modeling effort have been conducted in order to determine which vital rates are most important to determining the growth and sustainability of marine mammal populations. Also addressed are the impacts of life-history, ecological, and genetic variation on vital rates and population sustainability and how much each vital parameter can change before a change in population trend would be expected. Additionally, the influence of ecological energetics and foraging strategies on vital rates and their limits of sustainable change are examined, and the nature of how an increase in sound in the marine environment might influence marine …

Population Structure Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) In The Urban Landscape Of The Cleveland, Ohio Area, Rebecca M. Rashleigh, Robert A. Krebs, Harry Van Keulen
Population Structure Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) In The Urban Landscape Of The Cleveland, Ohio Area, Rebecca M. Rashleigh, Robert A. Krebs, Harry Van Keulen
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
To obtain information on the population structure of coyote (Canis latrans) in an urban setting, a non-invasive genetic sampling technique was applied that consisted of DNA isolation from scat collected around the Cleveland metropolitan area. Muscle tissue was provided from two other coyotes. Amplifying the mitochondrial D-loop or control region produced 33 haplotypes from just 57 coyote sequences and two additional dog sequences from putative coyote-dog hybrids. The mitochondrial DNA genetic diversity in the Cleveland area was high, π 0.02, and composed of six distinct haplotype lineages. In addition, Fst values ranged from 0.07 between collections east and west of …

The study discusses the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in dispute resolution and examines issues influencing its effectiveness. This paper investigates the trade disputes between the US and the European Union, focusing on the agricultural sector controversies over crops, beef, and bananas in addition to the conflict over the US government decision to impose tariffs on imported low-cost steel. The final sections of the paper highlight some of the structural factors that create limitation in the role of the WTO in resolution of disputes and provide analyses with the potential of enhancing the capabilities of the WTO in …

This study was conducted to compare the presence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter, Salmonella spp., and other enteric bacteria between chickens and guinea fowls. Birds were reared on enclosed concrete floor housing covered with pine wood shavings litter material. Chicken (n = 40) and guinea fowl (n = 40) carcasses, drinking water (10 mL; n = 40), and litter (10 g; n = 40) were aseptically collected randomly from a poultry farm and analyzed within 1 h of collection. Individual pens served as experimental units and were replicated twice. Campylobacter spp., Salmonella spp., and other enterobactericeae were isolated and identified …
