Rural Livelihoods, Hiv/Aids And Women’S Activism: The Struggle For Gender Equality In Primary Education In Uganda, Doris M. Kakuru Oct 2008

Rural Livelihoods, Hiv/Aids And Women’S Activism: The Struggle For Gender Equality In Primary Education In Uganda, Doris M. Kakuru

Journal of International Women's Studies

In Uganda, various stake holders including the government, NGOs, and women activists have undeniably played important roles in the combat for gender equality in primary education. However, there is evidence that success has not yet been realized. This article is based on research conducted to discover why gender inequalities in Uganda’s Universal Primary Education persist despite deliberate measures to eradicate them. Two questions are addressed, namely: does HIV/AIDS contribute to the persistence of gender inequality in rural areas? What is the importance of linking theory and practice in women’s activism in such a context? The findings reveal that HIV/AIDS affects …

Justiciable Generalized Grievances, Kimberly L. Wehle Oct 2008

Justiciable Generalized Grievances, Kimberly L. Wehle

All Faculty Scholarship

The Supreme Court's prevailing test for Article III standing - injury-in-fact, causation, and redressability - generally restricts suits to remedy injuries affecting broad segments of the public in substantially equal measure. In Massachusetts v. EPA, the Supreme Court appeared to depart from this proposition in holding that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has standing to sue the EPA to prompt it to slow global warming, a harm that affects everyone on Earth. The dissenting Justices assailed the majority for finding justiciable a so-called “generalized grievance” in contravention of prior standing precedent that is based on the notion that if parties seek …

Under-The-Table Overruling, Christopher J. Peters Oct 2008

Under-The-Table Overruling, Christopher J. Peters

All Faculty Scholarship

In this contribution to a Wayne Law Review symposium on the first three years of the Roberts Court, the author normatively assesses the Court's practice of "under-the-table overruling," or "underruling," in high-profile constitutional cases involving abortion, campaign-finance reform, and affirmative action. The Court "underrules" when it renders a decision that undercuts a recent precedent without admitting that it is doing so. The author contends that underruling either is not supported by, or is directly incompatible with, three common rationales for constitutional stare decisis: the noninstrumental rationale, the predictability rationale, and the legitimacy rationale. In particular, while the latter rationale - …

E-Learning Pedagogy In The Primary School Classroom: The Mcdonaldization Of Education, Matthew Etherington Oct 2008

E-Learning Pedagogy In The Primary School Classroom: The Mcdonaldization Of Education, Matthew Etherington

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper begins as an initial rejoinder to the ideas expressed by Ross (2000) in The Promise and Perils of E-Learning: A critical look at the new technology. In his article, Ross supports the traditional practices of pedagogy at the primary school level—face-to-face pedagogy— and then critiques what he describes as a ‘fetishisation’ of technological pedagogy—a fetishisation seen in the increase of E-learning pedagogy at the primary school level. The ideas expressed in this article gain their structure and momentum from Ross’s (2000) arguments against E-learning and extends a more cautious approach to the widespread belief in the success of …

The Unpublished Free Exercise Opinion In Jensen V. Quaring, Paul E. Mcgreal Oct 2008

The Unpublished Free Exercise Opinion In Jensen V. Quaring, Paul E. Mcgreal

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Since they were opened to the public in March 2004, the Harry A. Blackmun Papers at the Library of Congress have provided a wealth of information about the United States Supreme Court and its landmark decisions. This Essay leaves the beaten path, focusing on an unpublished Opinion of the Court in the relatively unknown case Jensen v. Quaring. In the official United States Reports, Jensen is a summary disposition–the Court split four to four and so affirmed the lower court without opinion. The Blackmun Papers, however, show that the vote after oral argument was five to three to reverse …

A Man’S Barn Is Not His Castle: Warrantless Searches Of Structures Under The “Open Fields Doctrine”, Rowan Themer Oct 2008

A Man’S Barn Is Not His Castle: Warrantless Searches Of Structures Under The “Open Fields Doctrine”, Rowan Themer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In 1924, the United States Supreme Court held that the Fourth Amendment does not require police or other government agents to obtain a warrant prior to entering upon privately owned "open fields." This exception to the warrant requirement became commonly known as the "open fields doctrine." The development of the law in this area has taken considerable time, yet has left some questions unresolved. One unanswered question is whether the Fourth Amendment protects structures that are located within open fields.

This Comment charts the development of the open fields doctrine in the United States Supreme Court, explores how other courts …

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams Oct 2008

The Power Of ‘When I Was Your Age’: Research On Parental Narratives And Their Influence On Cognitive Dissonance In Children, Darci C. Adams

Masters Theses

Parents are continually looking for correct and effective ways to discipline and instruct their children. Often, parents will tell a personal narrative beginning with “when I was your age” to demonstrate to their children the appropriate way to think and behave. This thesis asks three research questions: What are the common themes in parental narratives that young adults remember in relation to instruction or discipline? How does the narrative structure demonstrate narrative coherence and fidelity? What do young adults self-report about the impact of the parental narrative on their cognitive dissonance? Through a content analysis of eighty completed surveys by …

South Valley Incorporation Feasibility Study (Revised), Lee A. Reynis, Molly J. Bleecker Oct 2008

South Valley Incorporation Feasibility Study (Revised), Lee A. Reynis, Molly J. Bleecker

BBER Publications

Determining the financial feasibility of a South Valley municipality requires developing estimates of the revenues that might be raised, and this in turn requires a careful reading of NM statutes to see what the city may be entitled to and what authority it has under state law, as well as estimating the tax bases and the levels of activity against which fees and charges for services will be assessed. It is also critical to determine how much it will cost to provide various municipal services to the South Valley. This study focuses on the costs and revenues associated with operating …

Familial Chylomicronemia In A Nine Months Old Infant, Saira Waqar Lone, Aamer Imdad, Abdul Gaffar Billoo

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Familial chylomicronemia syndrome is a rare disorder of lipoprotein metabolism due to familial lipoprotein lipase or apolipoprotein C-II deficiency or the presence of inhibitors to lipoprotein lipase. It manifests as eruptive xanthomas, acute pancreatitis, and lipaemic plasma due to marked elevation of triglyceride and chylomicrons levels. We report a rare case of familial chylomicronemia in a 9-month-old infant, who was diagnosed after his plasma was incidentally found to be milky. Lipid profile showed familial chylomicronemia (Type 1 Hyperlipidemia). The infant was started on a low fat diet and advised a regular follow-up.

Population Size And Incidence Of Virus Infection In Free-Living Populations Of Cucurbita Pepo, Hector Quemada, Laura Strehlow, Deena S. Decker-Walters, Jack E. Staub

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Impact assessments of virus resistance transgene introgression into wild, free-living populations are important for determining whether these transgenes present a risk to agriculture or the environment. Transgenic virus-resistant Cucurbita pepo ssp. ovifera var. ovifera L. (squash) cultivars have been commercialized, and may be cultivated in close proximity to cross-compatible wild, free-living relatives (C. pepo subsp. pepo vars. ozarkana and texana). Therefore, the potential impact of these virus resistance transgenes was studied by surveying the incidence and fluctuations of virus infection (as assayed by ELISA), virus symptoms (which may not be seen in an infected plant) and population size in forty-three …

The Effects Of Acute Stress On Human Prefrontal Working Memory Systems, Anthony J. Porcelli, Daniel Cruz, Karen Wenberg, Michael D. Patterson, Bharat B. Biswal, Bart Rypma Oct 2008

The Effects Of Acute Stress On Human Prefrontal Working Memory Systems, Anthony J. Porcelli, Daniel Cruz, Karen Wenberg, Michael D. Patterson, Bharat B. Biswal, Bart Rypma

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

We examined the relationship between acute stress and prefrontal-cortex (PFC) based working memory (WM) systems using behavioral (Experiment 1) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI; Experiment 2) paradigms. Subjects performed a delayed-response item-recognition task, with alternating blocks of high and low WM demand trials. During scanning, participants performed this task under three stress conditions: cold stress (induced by cold-water hand-immersion), a room temperature water control (induced by tepid-water hand-immersion), and no-water control (no hand-immersion). Performance was affected by WM demand, but not stress. Cold stress elicited greater salivary cortisol readings in behavioral subjects, and greater PFC signal change in fMRI …

Bayesian Tensor Approach For 3-D Face Modeling, Dacheng Tao, Mingli Song, Xuelong Li, Jialie Shen, Jimeng Sun, Xindong Wu, Christos Faloutsos, Stephen J. Maybank

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Effectively modeling a collection of three-dimensional (3-D) faces is an important task in various applications, especially facial expression-driven ones, e.g., expression generation, retargeting, and synthesis. These 3-D faces naturally form a set of second-order tensors-one modality for identity and the other for expression. The number of these second-order tensors is three times of that of the vertices for 3-D face modeling. As for algorithms, Bayesian data modeling, which is a natural data analysis tool, has been widely applied with great success; however, it works only for vector data. Therefore, there is a gap between tensor-based representation and vector-based data analysis …

A Study Of Early Stage Game Design And Prototyping, Brien Colwell, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay Oct 2008

A Study Of Early Stage Game Design And Prototyping, Brien Colwell, Richard C. Davis, James A. Landay

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Computer games and simulations can be valuable teaching and communication tools, and they are a powerful form of self-expression. Unfortunately, creating games requires programming, and programming requires time and skill. Some tools facilitate game creation to motivate novice programmers, but programming is still necessary. Other systems require less programming, but they are narrowly focused. To enable faster, simpler, and more expressive tools for professionals and amateurs, we have explored the processes and tools used in the early stages of game and simulation design. Interviews with educators clarified the uses of simulations in the classroom, while interviews with professional game designers …

Selection Of Concept Detectors For Video Search By Ontology-Enriched Semantic Spaces, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang Jiang Oct 2008

Selection Of Concept Detectors For Video Search By Ontology-Enriched Semantic Spaces, Xiao-Yong Wei, Chong-Wah Ngo, Yu-Gang Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the construction and utilization of two novel semantic spaces, namely Ontology-enriched Semantic Space (OSS) and Ontology-enriched Orthogonal Semantic Space (OS2), to facilitate the selection of concept detectors for video search. These two semantic spaces are enriched with ontology knowledge, while emphasizing consistent and uniform comparison of ontological relatedness among concepts for query-to-concept mapping. OS2, in addition to being a linear space like OSS, also guarantees orthogonality of the semantic space. Compared with other ontology reasoning measures, both spaces are capable of providing platforms that offer a global view of concept inter-relatedness, by allowing evaluation of concept similarity …
