Corn Futures: Consumer Politics, Health, And Climate Change, Jedediah S. Purdy, James Salzman Jan 2008

Corn Futures: Consumer Politics, Health, And Climate Change, Jedediah S. Purdy, James Salzman

Faculty Scholarship

The rise of corn has brought great benefits, but its large and growing costs have also become increasingly clear. In this Article, we explore the unprecedented roles of corn in our economy, explain how law and policy have shaped these roles, uncover the environmental and social impacts of corn, and consider how to think of consumption in this context. If voting-by-buying is an increasingly relevant model of consumer engagement, can we envision consumers being presented with choices that address the social and environmental harms from our dependence on corn? More generally, how should we think about consumer engagement, both its …

Tillage Erosion Coefficients For Selected Tillage Tools, Javier Mollinendo Jan 2008

Tillage Erosion Coefficients For Selected Tillage Tools, Javier Mollinendo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soil loss as a result of differential translocation of soil by tillage is widespread in regions with irregular topography. Tillage erosion models are based on field derived transport coefficients that are specific to the tillage tool being used. Variables like speed and depth of tillage can modify tillage erosion transport coefficients. Four treatments were established for this research: moldboard plow, chisel plow, tandem disk, and no-till drill. The primary research site was located in Rock County MN, 43° 39 '40.24 "N, and 96° 24' 17.25" W, with a fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Cumulic Endoaquolls (USDA, 2006). The objectives of this …

Patent Judicial Wisdom, Srividhya Ragavan Jan 2008

Patent Judicial Wisdom, Srividhya Ragavan

Faculty Scholarship

This paper discusses the role of the Indian Judiciary vis-A-vis the patent regime, but carefully avoids creating an exhaustive wish list. Instead, this paper uses illustrations from the United States to draw valuable lessons. Importantly, the paper does not advocate that the Indian Judiciary emulate the United States judiciary. In fact, conventional wisdom dictates that copying the policies or precedents of the West does not always work in developing countries given the stark differences in ground realities like poverty, investments, infrastructure, and other such indicators. Instead, the judicial wisdom that characterizes each of the illustrations sets the common thread for …

The Scope Of Criminal Law And Criminal Sanctions: An Economic View And Policy Implications, Roger Bowles, Michael Faure, Nuno Garoupa Jan 2008

The Scope Of Criminal Law And Criminal Sanctions: An Economic View And Policy Implications, Roger Bowles, Michael Faure, Nuno Garoupa

Faculty Scholarship

This paper considers why some harm-generating activities are controlled by criminal law and criminal sanctions while others are subject to some other mechanism such as civil law, administrative law, regulation or the tax system. It looks at the question from the perspective of the law and economics approach. We seek to identify the comparative benefits of using the criminal law relative to other enforcement mechanisms and--more broadly--why certain specific behaviours are criminalized. The paper argues that an economic approach emphasizing the relative merits of alternative legal instruments for bringing about harm reduction can provide an explanation for a number of …

Il-21 Limits Peripheral Lymphocyte Numbers Through T Cell Homeostatic Mechanisms., Shrimati Datta, Nora E. Sarvetnick Jan 2008

Il-21 Limits Peripheral Lymphocyte Numbers Through T Cell Homeostatic Mechanisms., Shrimati Datta, Nora E. Sarvetnick

Journal Articles: Regenerative Medicine

BACKGROUND: IL-21, a member of the common gamma-chain utilizing family of cytokines, participates in immune and inflammatory processes. In addition, the cytokine has been linked to autoimmunity in humans and rodents.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To investigate the mechanism whereby IL-21 affects the immune system, we investigated its role in T cell homeostasis and autoimmunity in both non-autoimmune C57BL/6 and autoimmune NOD mice. Our data indicate that IL-21R knockout C57BL/6 and NOD mice show increased size of their lymphocyte population and decreased homeostatic proliferation. In addition, our experimental results demonstrate that IL-21 inhibits T cell survival. These data suggest that IL-21 acts …

No Outsourcing Of Law? Wto Law As Practiced By Wto Courts, Petros C. Mavroidis Jan 2008

No Outsourcing Of Law? Wto Law As Practiced By Wto Courts, Petros C. Mavroidis

Faculty Scholarship

This article provides a critical assessment of the corpus of law that the adjudicating bodies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) – the Appellate Body (AB) and panels – have used since the organization was established on January 1, 1995. After presenting a taxonomy of WTO law, I move to discern, and to provide a critical assessment of, the philosophy of the WTO adjudicating bodies, when called to interpret it. In discussing the law that WTO adjudicating bodies have used, I distinguish between sources of WTO law and interpretative elements. This distinction will be explicated in part I below. Part …

Toward A Poeticognosis: Re-Reading Plato's The Republic Via Wallace Stevens' "An Ordinary Evening In New Haven", Dan Disney Jan 2008

Toward A Poeticognosis: Re-Reading Plato's The Republic Via Wallace Stevens' "An Ordinary Evening In New Haven", Dan Disney

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This article is a language-based re-reading of Plato's exile of the poets via Wallace Stevens' poem-manifesto, "An Ordinary Evening in New Haven." I examine how philosophy and poetry use language differently in order to deconstruct an origin of the speech-acts -- wonder -- that I then identify as a phenomenological difference between philosophers and poets. I contend that the thinking-into-language of philosophers is based in theoria, comprehension, and a resulting closure of wonder. I contrast this with the processes of poets, who I show to be moving thought into language via gnosis, apprehension, and a phenomenology opening onto …

Values, Ideologies, And Frames Of Reference In Employment Relations, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave Jan 2008

Values, Ideologies, And Frames Of Reference In Employment Relations, John W. Budd, Devasheesh P. Bhave

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Employment relations—which form most of the 20th century was called industrial relations, and what some now call human resources and industrial relations—is a multidisciplinary field studying all aspects of work and the employment relationship (Ackers and Wilkinson, 2003; Budd, 2004; Kaufm an, 2004). A multidisciplinary approach means that competing values and assumptions underlie the analyses, policies, and practices of employment relations scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. Unfortunately, these underlying beliefs are often implicit rather than explicit, or, with the longstanding focus on how industrial relations processes work, sometimes ignored altogether. But understanding the employment relationship, corporate human resource management practices, labor …

Corn Futures: Consumer Politics, Health, And Climate Change, Jedediah Purdy, James Salzman

Faculty Scholarship

The Mexicans have long been known as the Corn People, but that label perhaps provides a better fit for modern day Americans. The simple seeds of corn play a fundamental role unprecedented in the history of human agriculture. Corn now underpins two major sectors, arguably the two most important sectors, of our modern economy - food supply and energy supply. How we choose to consume this seed has far-ranging consequences for pressing issues as far apart as climate change and diabetes, energy policy and immigration, tropical deforestation and food riots.

Redesigning The European Court Of Human Rights: Embeddedness As A Deep Structural Principle Of The European Human Rights Regime, Laurence R. Helfer Jan 2008

Redesigning The European Court Of Human Rights: Embeddedness As A Deep Structural Principle Of The European Human Rights Regime, Laurence R. Helfer

Faculty Scholarship

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is the crown jewel of the world’s most advanced international system for protecting civil and political liberties. In recent years, however, the ECHR has become a victim of its own success. The Court now faces a docket crisis of massive proportions, the consequence of the growing number of states subject to its jurisdiction, its favourable public reputation, its expansive interpretations of individual liberties, a distrust of domestic judiciaries in some countries, and entrenched human rights problems in others. In response to this growing backlog of individual complaints, the Council of Europe has, over …

School of Biomedical Sciences

The early systemic production of interferon (IFN)-alphabeta is an essential component of the antiviral host defense mechanisms, but is also thought to contribute to the toxic side effects accompanying gene therapy with adenoviral vectors. Here we investigated the IFN-alphabeta response to human adenoviruses (Ads) in mice. By comparing the responses of normal, myeloid (m)DC- and plasmacytoid (p)DC-depleted mice and by measuring IFN-alphabeta mRNA expression in different organs and cells types, we show that in vivo, Ads elicit strong and rapid IFN-alphabeta production, almost exclusively in splenic mDCs. Using knockout mice, various strains of Ads (wild type, mutant and UV-inactivated) and …

Fleas, Erin W. Hodgson, Jay B. Karren, Alan H. Roe Jan 2008

Fleas, Erin W. Hodgson, Jay B. Karren, Alan H. Roe

All Current Publications

Fleas transmit disease and parasitic worms, and cause allergic dermatitis to humans and animals. There are about 2,000 different flea species in the world and at least 325 species in North America, all belonging to the order Siphonaptera. Fleas are not likely to be confused with other insects because adults are flattened dorsal-ventrally, or side-to-side.

Human Lice, Erin W. Hodgson Jan 2008

Characterization Of Changes In Muscle Performance In Vivo During A Chronic Exposure Of Stretch-Shortening Cycles: Age Effects., Kenneth B. Geronilla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this research was to investigate the skeletal muscle response to a chronic administration of stretch-shortening cycles (SSCs) in young and old rats. Dorsiflexor muscles of old and young rats were exposed 3 times per week for 4.5 weeks to a protocol of 80 maximal stretch-shortening cycles per exposure in vivo. Skeletal muscle response was characterized by force and work parameters of the stretch-shortening contraction at each exposure interval. The performance of the young and old groups was not statistically different at the start of the exposure, but increased significantly by 25%-30% in the young animals and decreased …

Response Of Carbon Fluxes To Water Relations In A Savanna Ecosystem In South Africa, W. L. Kutsch, N. Hanan, B. Scholes, I. Mchugh, W. Kubheka, H. Eckhardt, Christopher A. Williams Jan 2008

Response Of Carbon Fluxes To Water Relations In A Savanna Ecosystem In South Africa, W. L. Kutsch, N. Hanan, B. Scholes, I. Mchugh, W. Kubheka, H. Eckhardt, Christopher A. Williams

Geography

The principal mechanisms that connect carbon fluxes with water relations in savanna ecosystems were studied by using eddy covariance method in a savanna ecosystem at Kruger National Park, South Africa. Since the annual drought and rewetting cycle is a major factor influencing the function of savanna ecosystems, this work focused on the close inter-connection between water relations and carbon fluxes. Data from a nine-month measuring campaign lasting from the early wet season to the late dry season were used.

Total ecosystem respiration showed highest values at the onset of the growing season, a slightly lower plateau during the main part …

Insights And Inspiration: Recent Commentary, Larry C. Spears Jan 2008

Insights And Inspiration: Recent Commentary, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

My dictionary offers the following definitions for the words: Heart, Mind, and Spirit- • Heart: regarded as the seat of emotions, personality, attributes. • Mind: the thinking and perceiving part of consciousness. • Spirit: a pervading animating principle, essential, or characteristic quality of life. I believe that all three of these are important to understanding the essential nature of servant-leadership. Standard practices are rapidly shifting toward the ideas put forward by Robert Greenleaf, Stephen Covey, Peter Senge, Max DePree, Margaret Wheatley, Ken Blanchard, and many others who suggest that there is a better way to lead and manage our organizations. …

What may be needed, and perhaps now it is a possibility, is a new initiative from some seekers in which they take responsibility for finding and responding to the contemporary prophet who will help them find their ways out of their individual and collective wildernesses so that they will become more effective servants of society. . . . How would Seekers Anonymous do for a name? .. . For those who participate, healing, the sense ofbeing made whole will come from deep involvement with creative work on the structural flaws in our society, work that has both ameliorative and society …

Perspectives On Servant-Leadership & Spirit In Organizations, John Horsman Jan 2008

Perspectives On Servant-Leadership & Spirit In Organizations, John Horsman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The precepts of servant-leadership, described by Robert K. Greenleaf, are the focal points around which this study was conducted. The study was designed to gain a measure of the extent of servant-leadership and personal aspects of spirit within the organizations, rather than as an attempt to measure the servant-leadership and spirit of certain organizational leaders. The quantitative study was designed to enhance understanding of servant-leadership and spirit in organizations.

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson Jan 2008

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert K. Greenleaf (1977) offers a foundational understanding of servant-leadership with this statement: The servant-leader is servant first. .. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. . . Then, conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead... The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest-priority needs are being served. The best test, and the most difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, and more likely themselves to become servants? And what …

The Public Interest, Professionalism, And Pro Bono Publico, Lorne Sossin Jan 2008

The Public Interest, Professionalism, And Pro Bono Publico, Lorne Sossin

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

There is a clear public interest benefit for lawyers to ensure access to the rule of law, especially on the part of the vulnerable. This article seeks to show that the seemingly simple relationship between the legal profession and the public interest is in fact more complicated than it looks. Pro bono may be viewed from two perspectives-that of the lawyer and that of the client. From the perspective of the lawyer, the important question is whether there is ethical motivation to engage in pro bono. If, however, the perspective of the client is paramount, then meeting the client's needs …

Discriminative-Stimulus And Time-Course Effects Of Kava-Kava (Piper Methysticum) In Rats, Natalie R. Bruner Jan 2008

Discriminative-Stimulus And Time-Course Effects Of Kava-Kava (Piper Methysticum) In Rats, Natalie R. Bruner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Kava-kava is a widely available and used herbal medicine that is not regulated in many countries, including the United States. There are many questions concerning kava-kava's stimulus properties, potential for therapeutic use, and potential for abuse. Although there is evidence that kava may possess some anxiolytic properties, the supplement's mechanism of action and the extent to which it may serve as an alternative to pharmaceutical anxiolytics are unknown. To date, there is no research examining whether kava shares discriminative-stimulus properties with a standard pharmaceutical anxiolytic such as chlordiazepoxide (CDP). The current study compared different doses of kava in two groups …

Involvement Of Adenosine A1 Receptors In Systemic Inflammation And Altered Vascular Reactivity In Allergic Mice, Dovenia S. Ponnoth

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Epidemiological studies have established that people who have lung diseases such as asthma and COPD are likely to develop adverse cardiovascular events. While the reason for this has not been elucidated, it is believed that inflammation could be the key component linking the two conditions. Adenosine, an endogenous purine nucleoside, has been strongly implicated in asthma pathophysiology and also has potent effects on the cardiovascular system. This work was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the relationship between asthma and its cardiovascular effects, and more specifically the possible role adenosine plays under these conditions.;We hypothesize that asthmatic lung inflammation …
