An Analysis Of Kentucky Equestrian Trail Riders: Determining Rider Behaviors And Valuing Site Amenities That Contribute To Repeat Visits, Katharine Auchter

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The purpose of this travel cost study is to determine how rider behaviors and site characteristics influence repeat visits for equestrian trail riding in Kentucky. Primary data was collected via a survey developed and administered to trail riders in person and online. The average surveyed trail rider tends to be female, about 46 years old, with some higher education, and an annual household income of $65,000. She makes 11 trips to a specified site per year, 8 of which are daytrips, usually in the fall, and traveling 132 miles round trip. From other information gathered, an index of trail characteristics …

Conversion Of One-Way Street Pairs To Two-Way Operations In Downtown Birmingham, Jugnu Chemmannur Jan 2008

Conversion Of One-Way Street Pairs To Two-Way Operations In Downtown Birmingham, Jugnu Chemmannur

All ETDs from UAB

In recent years, higher-than-ever gas prices and soaring living expenses are driv-ing people back to city centers in search of reduced travel costs and greater proximity to services. This calls for an immediate need to revive downtown areas to make them attrac-tive and increase their efficiency at accommodating a variety of transportation modes, motorized and non-motorized. To help support this revival, researchers are conducting studies countrywide to understand the effects and relevance of conversion of one-way streets to two-way opera-tions. This paper reports the findings of a study that investigated the feasibility and poten-tial impacts of street conversion options on …

Exercise Training Improves Premenopausal Women's Ability To Estimate Energy Expenditure After Weight Loss, Micah D. Greer Jan 2008

Exercise Training Improves Premenopausal Women's Ability To Estimate Energy Expenditure After Weight Loss, Micah D. Greer

All ETDs from UAB

Objective: Previously we have shown that total free living energy expenditure (TEE) and greater fitness was associated with reduced long term weight gain and improved ability to estimate TEE from physical activity (PA) questionnaires. In the current study, it is hypothesized that women will overestimate questionnaire self reported energy expenditure (QEE). Furthermore, weight reduced women who exercise train will be better able to estimate TEE compared to weight reduced women who do not exercise train. Design: The participants consisted of 35 European American (EA) and 49 African American (AA) pre-menopausal women. These women were evaluated while overweight and when weight …

The Interpretation Game, Robert E. Rodes Jan 2008

The Interpretation Game, Robert E. Rodes

Journal Articles

Sir James Fitzjames Stephen, embarking on a powerful critique of John Stuart Mill, says: "In stating the grounds of one's dissent from wide-spread and influential opinions it is absolutely necessary to take some definite statement of those opinions as a starting point, and it is natural to take the ablest, the most reasonable, and the clearest." This is my justification for reviewing the present work. My disagreement with it is broad and deep, but, unlike many proponents of similar views, Professor Benson writes clearly and without jargon, and he brings to his work the experience of a working lawyer and …

Development And Reform Of The Iraqi Police Forces, C. Anthony Pfaff Dr. Jan 2008

Development And Reform Of The Iraqi Police Forces, C. Anthony Pfaff Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Despite 4 years of millions of dollars in aid, equipment, education, and advisors, Iraqi police force development lags far behind the military. Numerous reasons are offered to account for this gap: corrupt practices left over from the previous regime, infiltration by militias, weak leadership, competition by better armed and organized criminal and militant groups, and so on. However, the military is also subject to these same influences, thus none of these explanations by themselves or in combination are satisfactory. The author argues that the poor political and security environment impacts social, political, and cultural factors in ways that are predictable, …

Microbial Community Structure Dynamics In Ohio River Sediments During Reductive Dechlorination Of Pcbs, Andres Enrique Nunez Jan 2008

Microbial Community Structure Dynamics In Ohio River Sediments During Reductive Dechlorination Of Pcbs, Andres Enrique Nunez

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The entire stretch of the Ohio River is under fish consumption advisories due to contamination with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In this study, natural attenuation and biostimulation of PCBs and microbial communities responsible for PCB transformations were investigated in Ohio River sediments.

Natural attenuation of PCBs was negligible in sediments, which was likely attributed to low temperature conditions during most of the year, as well as low amounts of available nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon. Moreover, surface sediments were relatively oxidized, as indicated by the prevalence of aerobic bacteria such as beta- Proteobacteria, alpha-Proteobacteria, Sphingobacteria, and Nitrospira in 16S rRNA sediment …

Valuations For Spike Train Prediction, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Kenneth D. Harris Jan 2008

Valuations For Spike Train Prediction, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Kenneth D. Harris

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The ultimate product of an electrophysiology experiment is often a decision on which biological hypothesis or model best explains the observed data. We outline a paradigm designed for comparison of different models, which we refer to as spike train prediction. A key ingredient of this paradigm is a prediction quality valuation that estimates how close a predicted conditional intensity function is to an actual observed spike train. Although a valuation based on log likelihood (L) is most natural, it has various complications in this context. We propose that a quadratic valuation (Q) can be used as an alternative to L. …

Canine Vector-Borne Diseases In Brazil [Review], Filipe Dantas-Torres Jan 2008

Canine Vector-Borne Diseases In Brazil [Review], Filipe Dantas-Torres

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are highly prevalent in Brazil and represent a challenge to veterinarians and public health workers, since some diseases are of great zoonotic potential. Dogs are affected by many protozoa (e.g. Babesia vogeli, Leishmania infantum, and Trypanosoma cruzi), bacteria (e.g. Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis), and helminths (e.g. Dirofilaria immitis and Dipylidium caninum) that are transmitted by a diverse range of arthropod vectors, including ticks, fleas, lice, triatomines, mosquitoes, tabanids, and phlebotomine sand flies. This article focuses on several aspects (etiology, transmission, distribution, prevalence, risk factors, diagnosis, control, prevention, and public health …

A Synopsis Of Nebraska Grasshopper Distributions, Mathew L. Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright Jan 2008

A Synopsis Of Nebraska Grasshopper Distributions, Mathew L. Brust, William Wyatt Hoback, Robert J. Wright

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Between 2005 and 2007, 656 new county records and eight new state records were obtained for Nebraska’s short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididae and Romaleidae). This represents an increase of 30% in the known grasshopper county records in Nebraska. Based on the large number of new distribution records, it appears that the previous distributions of Nebraska’s grasshoppers greatly underestimated the actual distributions. The new grasshopper state records were: Boopedon gracile, Chloealtis abdominalis, Encoptolophus subgracilis, Melanoplus bispinosus, Melanoplus borealis, Melanoplus punctulatus, Paratylotropidia brunneri, and Psinidia fenestralis were obtained. These new records will aid in both grasshopper monitoring for pest outbreaks and in conservation of …

Life In A Temperate Polar Sea: A Unique Taphonomic Window On The Structure Of A Late Cretaceous Arctic Marine Ecosystem, Karen Chin, John Bloch, Arthur Sweet, Justin Tweet, Jaelyn Eberle, Stephen Cumbaa, Jakub Witowski, David M. Harwood

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

As the earth faces a warming climate, the rock record reminds us that comparable climatic scenarios have occurred before. In the Late Cretaceous, Arctic marine organisms were not subject to frigid temperatures but still contended with seasonal extremes in photoperiod. Here, we describe an unusual fossil assemblage from Devon Island, Arctic Canada, that offers a snapshot of a ca 75 MYR ago marine paleoecosystem adapted to such conditions. Thick siliceous biogenic sediments and glaucony sands reveal remarkably persistent high primary productivity along a high-latitude Late Cretaceous coastline. Abundant fossil feces demonstrate that this planktonic bounty supported benthic invertebrates and large, …

In a subset of 69 strains selected on the basis of specific phage types (PTs), a strong correlation between the lineage-specific polymorphism assay (LSPA6) genotype and PT was observed with all strains of PTs 4, 14, 21, 31, 33, and 87 belonging to the LSPA6 lineage I (LSPA6-LI) genotype, while those of PTs 23, 45, 67, and 74 belonged to LSPA6 lineage II (LSPA6-LII) …

Demographic Effects Of Canine Parvovirus On A Free-Ranging Wolf Population Over 30 Years, L. David Mech, Sagar M. Goyal, William J. Paul, Wesley E. Newton Jan 2008

Demographic Effects Of Canine Parvovirus On A Free-Ranging Wolf Population Over 30 Years, L. David Mech, Sagar M. Goyal, William J. Paul, Wesley E. Newton

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We followed the course of canine parvovirus (CPV) antibody prevalence in a subpopulation of wolves (Canis lupus) in northeastern Minnesota from 1973, when antibodies were first detected, through 2004. Annual early pup survival was reduced by 70%, and wolf population change was related to CPV antibody prevalence. In the greater Minnesota population of 3,000 wolves, pup survival was reduced by 40–60%. This reduction limited the Minnesota wolf population rate of increase to about 4% per year compared with increases of 16–58% in other populations. Because it is young wolves that disperse, reduced pup survival may have caused reduced …

Spatial And Temporal Differences In Giant Kidney Worm, Dictophyma Renale, Prevalence In Minnesota Mink, Mustela Vison, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Examination of 110 Mink (Mustela vison) carcasses from 1998 through 2007 indicated that the giant kidney worm, Dioctophyma renale, occurred in Pine and Kanabec Counties of eastern Minnesota with annual prevalences of 0-92%. Worm prevalence increased from 20% in 1999 to 92% in 2001 and decreased to 6% in 2005. During 2000 to 2007, no worms were found in Mink from Anoka and Chisago Counties (n = 54), and in 2000, none in 107 Mink from LeSeur, Freeborn, Redwood, Brown and Watonwan Counties. Changes in kidney worm prevalence were positively related to trapping success, considered an index …

Wolf Body Mass Cline Across Minnesota Related To Taxonomy?, L. David Mech, William J. Paul Jan 2008

Wolf Body Mass Cline Across Minnesota Related To Taxonomy?, L. David Mech, William J. Paul

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Recent genetic studies suggest that in northern Minnesota two species of wolves (Canis lupus L., 1758 or western wolf and Canis lycaon Schreber, 1775 (= Canis rufus Audubon and Bachman, 1851) or eastern wolf) meet and hybridize. However, little morphological information is available about these two types of wolves in Minnesota. We analyzed the mass of 950 female wolves and 1006 males older than 1 year from across northern Minnesota and found that it increased from 26.30 ± 0.56 kg (mean ± SE) for females and 30.60 ± 0.72 kg for males in northeastern Minnesota to 30.01 ± 0.43 …

Biology And Biological Control Of Exotic True Thistles, Rachel Winston, Rich Hansen, Mark Schwarzlander, Eric Coombs, Carol Bell Randall, Rodney Lym

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

“Thistle” is an old English name for a large variety of weedy, prickly plants that grow throughout the world. The most notable characteristics of thistles are the prickly stems and leaves and the bracts around the flower head. While many different plants have “thistle” in their common name, only certain plant species fit the taxonomic requirements of being considered “true thistles.” True thistle species fall within the family Asteraceae, the tribe Cardueae, and the subtribe Carduinae. Examples of plants that are not true thistles include yellow starthistle (subtribe Centaureinae), sow thistle (subtribe Sonchinae), and Russian thistle (family Chenopodiaceae). Only true …

Evolutionary And Structural Analyses Of Alpha-Papillomavirus Capsid Proteins Yields Novel Insights Into L2 Structure And Interaction With L1, John Lowe, Debasis Panda, Suzanne Rose, Ty Jensen, Willie Hughes, For Yue Tso, Peter C. Angeletti

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Background: PVs (PV) are small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses that have been identified as the primary etiological agent for cervical cancer and their potential for malignant transformation in mucosal tissue has a large impact on public health. The PV family Papillomaviridae is organized into multiple genus based on sequential parsimony, host range, tissue tropism, and histology. We focused this analysis on the late gene products, major (L1) and minor (L2) capsid proteins from the family Papillomaviridae genus Alpha-papillomavirus. Alpha-PVs preferentially infect oral and anogenital mucosa of humans and primates with varied risk of oncogenic transformation. Development of evolutionary associations between …

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Envelope Confers Higher Rates Of Replicative Fitness To Perinatally Transmitted Viruses Than To Nontransmitted Viruses, Xiaohong Kong, John T. West, Hong Zhang, Danielle M. Shea, Tendai J. M’Soka, Charles Wood Jan 2008

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Envelope Confers Higher Rates Of Replicative Fitness To Perinatally Transmitted Viruses Than To Nontransmitted Viruses, Xiaohong Kong, John T. West, Hong Zhang, Danielle M. Shea, Tendai J. M’Soka, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Selection of a minor viral genotype during perinatal transmission of human Immunodeficiency virus type 1

(HIV-1) has been observed, but there is a lack of information on the correlation of the restrictive transmission

with biological properties of the virus, such as replicative fitness. Recombinant viruses expressing the enhanced

green fluorescent protein or the Discosoma sp. red fluorescent (DsRed2) protein carrying the V1 to V5

regions of env from seven mother-infant pairs (MIPs) infected by subtype C HIV-1 were constructed, and

competition assays were carried out to compare the fitness between the transmitted and nontransmitted

viruses. Flow cytometry was used to …

Effects Of Shielding Adenoviral Vectors With Polyethylene Glycol On Vector-Specific And Vaccine-Mediated Immune Responses, Eric A. Weaver, Michael A. Barry Jan 2008

Effects Of Shielding Adenoviral Vectors With Polyethylene Glycol On Vector-Specific And Vaccine-Mediated Immune Responses, Eric A. Weaver, Michael A. Barry

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Many individuals have been previously exposed to human adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5). This prior immunity has long been known to hinder its use for gene therapy and as a gene-based vaccine. Given these immunogenicity problems, we have tested whether polyethylene glycol (PEG) can blunt immune effects against Ad5 during systemic and mucosal vaccination. Ad5 vectors were covalently modified with 5-, 20-, and 35-kDa linear PEG polymers and evaluated for their ability to produce immune responses against transgene antigen prod- ucts and the vector itself. We show that shielding Ad5 with different-sized PEGs generally reduces transduction and primary antibody responses by …

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The present study was aimed at providing data to be used at predicting exposure-based effects of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) aged in soil on endpoint organisms representing two trophic levels. These data can be used to define criteria or reference values for environmental management and conducting specific risk assessment. Long-term exposure tests were conducted to evaluate sublethal toxicity and uptake of aged soil-based explosives, with TNT as the main contaminant. In these tests, plants were exposed for 55 d, and biomass and explosives residues were determined. Worms were exposed for 28 and 42 d, and biomass, number, and tissue residues were determined. …
