Septic shock results from an uncontrolled inflammatory response, mediated primarily by LPS. Cholesterol transport plays an important role in the host response to LPS, as LPS is neutralized by lipoproteins and adrenal cholesterol uptake is required for antiinflammatory glucocorticoid synthesis. In this study, we show that scavenger receptor B-I (SR-BI), an HDL receptor that mediates HDL cholesterol ester uptake into cells, is required for the normal antiinflammatory response to LPS-induced endotoxic shock. Despite elevated plasma HDL levels, SR-BI–null mice displayed an uncontrollable inflammatory cytokine response and a markedly higher lethality rate than control mice in response to LPS. In addition, …

The most embarrassing secrets are usually the most boring. I might, for instance, tell you that I am 39 and like to hum show tunes in the shower and wear briefs and not boxers, but I would never tell you that every Thursday, at precisely seven a.m., I step on to the Number 7 bus at the 100th Street stop and do not get off for hours.

Nora woke up before her alarm went off. She half-wished she could go back to sleep, but her internal clock was too stubborn to allow it. The room was still dark, and she lay for several minutes, listening to the silence and watching the glowing red numbers on the digital clock across the room. She treated the device warily, like a wild animal that sat encaged on her bookshelf. She hated the harsh sound of it enough to get up every morning and trot across the room to turn it off before it awoke.

In my daydream, I had a mug of hot cocoa in one hand, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden in my other hand, and a space heater at my feet. I had no reason to shiver, no reason to want to be elsewhere, no reason to wonder why Cody and I had spent the night with Cody’s parents, which made it nearly impossible to get out of deer hunting. In my daydream, I had no reason to wish Larry and Lori didn’t suspect I would accidently burn their house down if I’d stayed behind to cook them supper. In my daydream, I …
Insurance For Pollution In Montana, Greg Munro
Insurance For Pollution In Montana, Greg Munro
Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings
This article reviews those Montana State and federal decisions involving insurance for pollution. The article begins by breaking down pollution insurance policies into four types over four periods: 1) "accident" based policies before 1966; 2) "occurrence" based policies post 1966; 3) policies containing "standard" pollution exclusion from 1970 until 1986; and 4) policies containing an absolute pollution exclusion from 1986 to date. The discussion of case decisions relates back to these policies and periods.

Got Organic Milk? "Pasture"-Ize It! An Analysis Of The Usda's Pasture Regulations For Organic Dairy Animals, Fatema Merchant
Animal Law Review
Trouble brews, on the other hand, for those advocates who aim farther afield, who demand that animals be granted formal legal rights. Graphics and adjectives alone are vastly insufficient to validate just how that project would operate under the law or how science and logic would support a formal position on animals as “rights-holders.” Unhappily, the animal rights movement, as it takes such aim, has shown that it is weaker, not stronger, for the effort. Separate from its vulnerability to criticism by those politically opposed, a call for legal rights for animals is without justification on the very two pillars …

Dog Meat In Korea: A Socio-Legal Challenge, Rakhyun E. Kim
Dog Meat In Korea: A Socio-Legal Challenge, Rakhyun E. Kim
Animal Law Review
This article explores the dog meat debate in Korea from a socio-legal perspective. It first examines the legal status of dogs and dog meat, and the legal protection for dogs under the old and new legislative frameworks. It then discusses socio-legal challenges to banning dog meat in the Korean context, employing examples of both legal approaches taken by other countries and the politics of dog meat in Korea, specifically. The article argues that the controversy over dog meat must be reframed and dog meat be socially redefined in order to protect dogs, which are currently caught in the conflict over …

Lessons Learned: Acting As Guardian/Special Master In The Bad Newz Kennels Case, Rebecca J. Huss
Animal Law Review
The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia appointed Rebecca Huss as the guardian/special master of the pit bulls that were the subject of the case against Michael Vick relating to dog fighting. In April of 2007, the Surry County Sheriff’s Department seized fifty-three pit bulls from Vick’s home in Virginia. According to the facts set forth in the plea agreement, dogs on the property were killed and subjected to violent dog fights. Similar to human victims of abuse, the dogs needed someone to represent their best interests during litigation. Huss was in charge of determining whether …
Using Special Masters To Advance The Goals Of Animal Protection Laws, Alexis C. Fox
Using Special Masters To Advance The Goals Of Animal Protection Laws, Alexis C. Fox
Animal Law Review
This article suggests that courts should appoint special masters to large-scale animal abuse cases. The work of special masters in two recent high profile cases, Sarah v. PPI and Vick, demonstrate that special masters can help advance the goals of the animal protection movement in three ways. First, special masters can ensure that individual animal victims are cared for once they are rescued from large-scale abuse situations. Second, court orders that appoint special masters to large-scale animal abuse cases insert a best-interest-of-the-animal analysis into formal court proceeding. Finally, court appointed special masters may encourage better enforcement of animal protection laws …

Sitting In Darkness: New South Fiction, Education, And The Rise Of Jim Crow Colonialism, 1865-1920, Peter Schmidt
English Literature Faculty Works
Sitting in Darkness explores how fiction of the Reconstruction and the New South intervenes in debates over black schools, citizen building, Jim Crow discrimination, and U.S. foreign policy towards its territories and dependencies. The author urges a reexamination not only of the contents and formal innovations of New South literature but also its importance in U.S. literary history. "Many rarely studied fiction authors (such as Ellwood Griest, Ellen Ingraham, George Marion McClellan, and Walter Hines Page) receive generous attention here, and well-known figures such as Albion Tourgee, Mark Twain, Frances E. W. Harper, W. E. B. Du Bois, Sutton Griggs, …

Terms Of Marriage And Time-Use Patterns Of Young Wives: Evidence From Rural Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Luciana Suran
Terms Of Marriage And Time-Use Patterns Of Young Wives: Evidence From Rural Bangladesh, Sajeda Amin, Luciana Suran
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This working paper explores the relationship between marriage arrangements and daily activities of young married women, using detailed time-use data from an adolescent study in rural Bangladesh. Measures of marriage arrangement are payment of dowry and the relative wealth status of natal and marital families. Using multivariate regression analysis, the results show that women’s time spent in domestic work, socializing, and self-care is significantly associated with marriage arrangement variables. Those who paid dowry spent more time in domestic work and less time in self-care and socializing relative to those who did not pay dowry. These patterns of association are similar …

Remembering The Persian Empire (Book Review), Elizabeth P. Baughan
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
Has the world forgotten the Persian empire? Three new publications approach this question from different angles. Despite what their titles imply, the British Museum's landmark 2005 exhibition, 'Forgotten Empire. The World of Ancient Persia', and catalogue of the same name have aimed to reclaim the Persian empire not from oblivion but rather from its reputation, founded upon Hellenocentric and Eurocentric biases, as a 'nest of despotism and tyranny', and to illuminate its 'true character' as a remarkably tolerant and cohesive imperial power that embraced cultural variation (pp. 6, 8). One could say that the Persian empire has not until now …

Contextualising Nanotechnology In Chemistry Education, Christine O'Connor, Hugh Hayden
Articles
This paper will give an example of a pedagogical approach taken in integrating nanotechnology into a chemistry degree course. In recent years nanotechnology has widely become part of the course content for undergraduate chemistry and physics degree curriculum. How contextualised the delivery of the subject matter may vary. The role of contextualisation of nanotechnology in the delivery of the content is the main focus of this paper, as to date in Ireland and many other countries nanotechnology has not been integrated into many chemistry degree courses but is slowly becoming the case. An evaluative methodology of the pedagogical approach for …

Research In Aboriginal Contexts: Kimberley Voices, Luke Taaffe
Theses
As a result of the enduring legacy of negative Australian history and culturally inappropriate past research practices, Aboriginal peoples are generally suspicious and mistrusting of research and researchers, particularly non-Indigenous researchers. Poor relations, paternalistic policies, racial discrimination and the inherent unequal power distribution in research relationships has seen many Aboriginal communities exploited, studied as ‘the other’, robbed of intellectual property, sacred artefacts and human remains. The introduction of ethical research guidelines in recent times has since improved contemporary researcher practices; however the lack of grassroots Aboriginal community consultation regarding appropriate, culturally competent research practices led the researcher to ask Aboriginal …

Words in abstract, 245. ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of centrifugation on equine sperm progressive motility, plasma membrane integrity (viability), and acrosome integrity. We hypothesized that high centrifugation forces would be detrimental to equine sperm, yet recovery rates would increase. Ejaculates from six stallions were collected, extended (INRA96) to a concentration of 25 …
