Good Nietzsche, Bad Nietzsche: The Role Of Friedrich Nietzsche In Richard Rorty’S Political Thought., Paul A. Snell Jr.
CMC Senior Theses
Richard Rorty found Friedrich Nietzsche’s critique of epistemology (perspectivism) to be a helpful tool in getting us to stop thinking of knowledge as something we find, and instead as something that we create. He also found perspectivism to be a helpful tool in that of the private sphere, of private self-creation. The Nietzsche that provides perspectivism is “The Good Nietzsche”. Rorty, however, conceived of Nietzsche’s ideas as being absolutely useless when it comes to politics, along with his ideas regarding morality, the Will to Power, and the Übermensch. These are the ideas of “The Bad Nietzsche”. Rorty’s actual usage of …
Regional Integration And Incomplete Club Goods: A Trade Perspective, Chris Brummer
Regional Integration And Incomplete Club Goods: A Trade Perspective, Chris Brummer
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Article undertakes the first systematic examination of RIAs as clubs in the legal literature and argues that although regional organizations exhibit some club-like dynamics they are at best incomplete forms of such cooperation. Two shortcomings are specifically identified. First, the Article shows that the legal architecture of trade agreements limits the degree to which regional organizations are truly exclusive. As a result, regional organizations provide fewer benefits to members than classic economic clubs. Second, regional organizations are heterogeneous in ways other than those envisioned in the classic economic club literature. Specifically, members differ not in terms of the degree …
The Wto And Biofuels: The Possibility Of Unilateral Sustainability Requirements, Enrique Rene De Vera
The Wto And Biofuels: The Possibility Of Unilateral Sustainability Requirements, Enrique Rene De Vera
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Development introduces the international legal issues raised by increasing trade in biofuels. Section II of the Development surveys the current biofuel landscape, providing statistics on the use and trade of biofuels, and discusses the prospect for increased production and trade in biofuels. Section III discusses the concept of sustainability-particularly in the context of biofuel production-as well as WTO treatment of past efforts to regulate trade based on environmental concerns. In conclusion, Section IV argues that current WTO jurisprudence leaves open the possibility that WTO members may rightfully discriminate against unsustainably produced biofuels.

A Novel Method For The Production Of Potentially Therapeutic Human Monoclonal Antibodies In Vitro, Adria L. Bykowski
A Novel Method For The Production Of Potentially Therapeutic Human Monoclonal Antibodies In Vitro, Adria L. Bykowski
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
We have developed a novel approach for the production of potentially therapeutic human monoclonal antibodies in vitro. This method holds great promise for generating therapeutic antibodies against infectious disease, cancer, and inflammation. The complex nature of current methods for producing human monoclonal antibodies is a major impediment to large scale passive transfer immunotherapy. Our novel technique utilizes Epstein-Barr virus immortalized tonsil or peripheral blood B cells from healthy human volunteers. These B cells are forced to undergo non-specific differentiation to become mature IgG antibody producing plasma "like" cells that continuously proliferate in vitro. Using this method, millions of transformed B …

Rapid Identification Of New England Freshwater Copepods Using A Novel Genetic Barcode, Elisah B. Allan
Rapid Identification Of New England Freshwater Copepods Using A Novel Genetic Barcode, Elisah B. Allan
Master's Theses and Capstones
Identification of freshwater calanoid and cyclopoid copepods is limited to adults of certain sexes because morphological keys are mostly based on mature reproductive structures, necessitating an alternate method. Genetic barcodes are an additional tool for distinguishing species using variation in short segments of DNA. I tested the utility of the 28S rDNA D3 expansion segment as a barcode for identifying five species of calanoids and five species of cyclopoids from multiple lakes from New England. Neighbor-joining trees grouped all conspecifics together with high bootstrap support, except for Leptodiaptomus minutus. Comparisons of intra- vs. interspecific variation revealed a barcode gap for …
Use Of Genetic Tagging To Estimate Abundance And Detect Spatial Patterns Of Black Bears In New Hampshire, Stephanie Coster
Use Of Genetic Tagging To Estimate Abundance And Detect Spatial Patterns Of Black Bears In New Hampshire, Stephanie Coster
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abundance estimates for black bears (Ursus americanus) are an important tool for effective management. Recent advancements in DNA technology have enabled genetic tagging mark-recapture population estimates using DNA from hair samples. I conducted a population estimate using genetic tagging in 2 study sites presumed to have different bear densities in northern New Hampshire (Pittsburg and Milan). To test repeatability, I conducted the genetic tagging estimates in 2 consecutive years. I also compared these estimates to those derived from traditional methods used by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department (NHFG) using hunter harvest and mortality data. I found that the …
Effects Of Vegetated Buffers On Salt Marsh Plant Composition And Groundwater Nitrogen Uptake, Joanne Singfield Glode
Effects Of Vegetated Buffers On Salt Marsh Plant Composition And Groundwater Nitrogen Uptake, Joanne Singfield Glode
Master's Theses and Capstones
Vegetated shoreline buffers are a best management practice to reduce anthropogenic nitrogen influences on estuarine ecology. This study examined the effects of buffers on (1) groundwater chemistry; (2) the salt marsh border plant community (fertilized and control); and (3) Agropyron pungens response to fertilization. All buffer widths (5 to 15 meters) were somewhat effective at removing groundwater nutrients, with greater concentrations of TDN, NO3--N, NH4 +-N, and DOC found in groundwater wells upslope of the buffer. Although on-site manure storage resulted in 30-fold greater groundwater nitrate concentrations (mean 23 mg/L) at the widest buffer, no differences were found in nitrate …
Effects Of Different Push-To-Talk Solutions On Driving Performance, Oskar Palinko
Effects Of Different Push-To-Talk Solutions On Driving Performance, Oskar Palinko
Master's Theses and Capstones
Police officers have been using the Project54 system in their vehicles for a number of years. They have also started using the handheld version of Project54 outside their vehicles recently. There is a need to connect these two instances of the system into a continuous user interface. On the other hand, research has shown that the PTT button location affects driving performance. This thesis investigates the difference between the old, fixed PTT button and a new wireless PTT glove, that could be used in and outside of the car. The thesis describes the design of the glove and the driving …

Development, Production, Purification, And Activity Of Recombinant Lamprey Gonadotropin In S2 Drosophila And Chinese Hamster Ovary Cell Lines, Geoffrey Bushold
Master's Theses and Capstones
The objective of this research was to develop methods for the production and purification of recombinant lamprey GTH beta. The overall goal was to produce an active purified recombinant lamprey GTH that could be used for immunological, physiological, and histological studies to further understand the role of the gonadotropin in the sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus. Constructs with different combinations of tethered lamprey gonadotropin beta to human CG alpha and channel catfish gonadotropin alpha were transfected and expressed in stable cell lines of Drosophila (S2) cells and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Cell lines were grown at a large scale and …
Factors Affecting Insulin-Stimulated In Vitro Glucose Oxidation In Rat Epididymal Adipocytes, Lisa C. Merrill
Factors Affecting Insulin-Stimulated In Vitro Glucose Oxidation In Rat Epididymal Adipocytes, Lisa C. Merrill
Master's Theses and Capstones
Since Martin Rodbell published his collagenase method for isolating rat adipocytes from their stromal-vascular matrix in 1964, researchers have modified the procedure in an attempt to maximize results. These modifications are also purported to decrease the interlaboratory variability observed by researchers who utilize this procedure. Strict adherence to these modifications does not, however, necessarily result in robust, repeatable in vitro insulin-stimulated glucose oxidation. The purpose of this study was to optimize Rodbell's procedure for measuring in vitro glucose oxidation in rat adipocytes, and to measure the effect of meal feeding on this process.
Adipocytes from rats in 26 optimization experiments …
Underwater Tracking Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) With High-Frequency Pingers And Acoustic Recording Tags, Val E. Schmidt
Underwater Tracking Of Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae) With High-Frequency Pingers And Acoustic Recording Tags, Val E. Schmidt
Master's Theses and Capstones
A long-baseline acoustic system has been developed for the tracking of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) that have been tagged with digital acoustic recording devices, or DTAGs, providing quantitative observations of submerged whale behavior. The system includes three acoustic sources deployed from small-boats that follow the whale after the animal has been tagged. Integrated GPS provides positioning and synchronized operation of the sources. Time-encoded signals from the sources are recorded along with whale vocalizations and ambient noise on the whale tag. Time-of-flight measurements, as measured by the tag acoustic data, are converted to range from the whale to each source with …

The Role Of Ompd In Adherence Of Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium To Macrophages And The Effects Of Mannan-Binding Lectin In Initial Attachment, Donna Louise Terrio
Master's Theses and Capstones
The binding of macrophages to the outer membrane porin proteins, OmpC and OmpD, and the effects of mannan-binding lectin (MBL) were investigated. MBL was isolated from pig serum in a multi-step affinity chromatography process and the purity of the samples was determined via sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) under reducing conditions. An Immunoglobulin G (IgG) Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to detect MBL. Porcine MBL was present in serum in approximately 30, 32 and 34 kDa monomeric forms. Bacterial binding assays were performed using Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium wild-type, ompC-deficient and ompD-deficient bacterial strains. These experiments were …
"I Remember When I Learned That": Gender Differences In The Use Of Episodic Memory, Rhyannon H. Bemis
"I Remember When I Learned That": Gender Differences In The Use Of Episodic Memory, Rhyannon H. Bemis
Master's Theses and Capstones
The experiments in this thesis were designed to investigate age and gender differences in the use of episodic memory. In experiment 1, children, ages 4 to 9 years, answered general knowledge questions and were asked how they knew the answer to these questions. Results indicated that there were some difference in the proportion of episodes girls reported. Girls' episodes also contained more details. Experiment 2 investigated source monitoring as a potential mechanism for children's use of an episodic recall style using a "drawer-task" with narratives as one of the source types. There were no gender differences, but there were age …

The "Loyalist Problem" In The Early Republic: Naturalization, Navigation And The Cultural Solution, 1783--1850, Emily Iggulden
Master's Theses and Capstones
Traditionally, studies of the Loyalists from the American Revolution highlight their wartime experience or explore their post-war experience as exiles in other areas of the British Empire. Instead, this study begins in 1783 and focuses on the majority of Loyalists who stayed in the United States after Independence. Using legal documents, personal correspondence, and popular newspapers the "Loyalist Problem in the Early Republic," analyzes the legal and cultural dimensions of citizenship from the Loyalist's perspective. It suggests that the Loyalists played a significant role in the legal and cultural formation of American citizenship and national identity. Additionally, it explores the …
A Model For Integrating Collaborative Life-Story Writing Into Counselor Training Programs, Jennifer Schroeder Andrews
A Model For Integrating Collaborative Life-Story Writing Into Counselor Training Programs, Jennifer Schroeder Andrews
Master's Theses and Capstones
Given the fundamental role of narrative deconstruction and reconstruction of client stories within the counseling profession, this thesis proposes creation of an elective course for counselor trainees based upon activities constructing personal experience narratives collaboratively in student dyads and in groups. The course was developed to facilitate three elements of professional and personal development: increased application of knowledge---specifically, knowledge of core counseling theories and tenets, social constructivism and narrative construction; interpersonal and relational skills; and judgment and maturity.
A review of the literature related to existing standards and precedents in counselor training, and the relationship to and use of collaborative …

To paraphrase Richard Falk: Terrorism is political or ideological violence without restraint of law and morality. This article will consider terrorism and reactions to terrorism through a prism of history, philosophy, literature, and law. I argue that terrorism is committed by state actors as well as non-state-actors, and not only by sponsoring them or giving them a safe-haven. I argue that intentional or reckless slaughter of innocents or torturing "enemies" constitutes terrorism and that it ultimately erodes a state's or a group's morality and well-being. It is ultimately self-destructive in most every way. Most nation-states and groups define terrorism in …
