Objectives: To study the impact of zinc administration on the morbidity and mortality attributed to diarrhoea among children less than 5 years old. Methods: The study design was a randomized double blinded controlled clinical trial, held at Elsabeen Hospital for Maternity and Childhood, Sana’a, Yemen. The study was conducted during the period September 2005 to October 2006 on 180 children less than 5 years old with acute diarrhoeal episodes. They were randomly allocated to two groups; one of them received a placebo and the other received zinc acetate syrup for 14 days. Both groups were followed up for 2 months. …

The Building America Industrialized Housing Partnership's work with two industry partners, Cavalier Homes and Southern Energy Homes, in constructing and evaluating prototype interior duct systems will be summarized. Issues of energy performance, comfort, DAPIA approval, manufacturability and cost will be addressed. A stage gate 2 analysis will address the current status of project showing that there are still refinements needed to the process of incorporating all of the ducts within the air and thermal boundaries of the envelope.

The characterization of 3-D shapes of particles in geomaterial aggregate mixtures is important for understanding the micro-mechanics of granular materials. Also, numerical synthesis of 3-D particle shapes from their corresponding shape descriptors is required for developing discrete element models (DEMs) that can be used to predict particle contact-forces, and ultimately the shear strength of the aggregate mixture.

Previous work has shown that Fourier-based 3-D shape descriptors can be constructed for aggregate mixtures, using a statistical combination of 2-D projections. The University of New Hampshire Zoology Department reports on a study designed to continue monitoring the distribution of invasive species in the Great Bay Estuary and to carry out laboratory experiments designed to test the effects of salinity on ascidian mortality and determine predators of ascidian species. Researchers collected presence/absence and abundance data of invasive species at four sites within the Great Bay Estuarine System. The report gives a brief description of the results of the monitoring program to compare results obtained from 2006 to 2007 and to assess the response of ascidians to varying salinity and predators. Children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) usually exhibit motor deficits and limited daily activities. Studies in recent years indicated that constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) might improve motor performance in CP patients. Combining kinematic analysis with clinical assessments, this study investigated the effect of modified CIMT (mCIMT) in four children with spastic CP immediately and one month after treatment. During the 3-week intervention, subjects underwent task-related training using the affected hand with restraint of the unaffected hand.The experimental results revealed significant improvements of the affected hand in use frequency, movement quality, grasping pattern, and bimanual coordination, both immediately and one month …

Objectives: To determine whether antiphosphatidyl serine autoantibodies (aPS) are associated with increased risk of occurrence of coronary events in selected patients. Methods: This study compared 50 patients with coronary events with 30 controls, recruited from the cities of Mosul, Erbil, and Dohuk cities, Northern Iraq, between March 2004 and March 2005. The patient group consisted of 23 individuals with myocardial infarction and 27 with angina. We evaluated the presence of aPS antibodies (IgG and IgM isotypes) by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The studied cases were less than 50 years of age (mean ± SD, 39.6 ± 5.9) and had no …

Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) are one of the biggest worldwide public health problem of today. Their effect is hidden and profoundly affects the quality of human life. Iodine deficiency occurs when the soil is poor in iodine, causing a low concentration in food products and insufficient iodine intake in the population. When iodine requirements are not met, the thyroid may no longer be able to synthesize sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. The resulting low-level of thyroid hormones in the blood is the principal factor responsible for the series of functional and developmental abnormalities, collectively referred to as IDD. This casereport describes a less common but not rare condition: iatrogenic accessory nerve injury after neck lymph node biopsy. The patient in this study presented symptoms of shoulder girdle pain and weakness and also complained of a ”hard palpated mass” over her shoulder girdle.A 49-year-old female complained of gradually worsening left shoulder pain accompanied by weakness and limited range of motion in her left shoulder for many months. Background: MacroH2A1 is a histone variant that is closely associated with the repressed regions of chromosomes. A recent study revealed that this histone variant is highly enriched in the inactive alleles of Imprinting Control Regions (ICRs). Results: The current study investigates the potential roles of macroH2A1 in genomic imprinting by lowering the cellular levels of the macroH2A1 protein. RNAi-based macroH2A1 knockdown experiments in Neuro2A cells changed the expression levels of a subset of genes, including Peg3 and Usp29 of the Peg3 domain. The expression of these genes was down-regulated, rather than up-regulated, in response to reduced protein levels of the …

This is a story about two immigrant tailors in Chicago-the white tailor's attempt to sell his tailor shop to the black tailor, and the racial discrimination they confronted together. One tailor, Ivan Thompson, was a black citizen of Great Britain living in Chicago, and the other, Martin Waysdorf, was a white Jew from Poland. He became a.
