Cerebellar mutism syndrome is a rare but devastating consequence following posterior fossa surgery or lesion. It tends to occure predominantly in children, and is characterized by transient mutism, oromotor apraxia, apathy, hypokinesis, irritability and mood lability. The vermis, paravermian region and deep cerebellar nuclei are important structures which are highly correlated with the occurrence of cerebellar mutism syndrome. We report two cases, aged 11 and 15 years, who developed cerebellar mutism after rupture of posterior fossa arteriovenous malformation. Swallowing difficulty, irritability and aggressive behavior occurred concomitant with mutism. For the two cases, their symptoms of mutism lasted for 6 months …

Objective: Prematurely born infants have been believed to be neurologically less mature than full-term neonates. The purpose of this study was to investigate the regulation and maturation of autonomic nervous systems, in both full-term and preterm neonates of different conceptional ages.Methods: One hundred and thirteen infants, both clinically and neurologically healthy and with conceptional ages of between 33 and 42 weeks, were enrolled in the study. Power spectrum analyses of heart rate variability were performed under standard conditions when the subjects were in a sleeping state. The functions of the foot and leg depend on several structural characteristics of the foot, of which the height of the medial longitudinal arch is the most important. This height is most commonly measured by using the arch index. However, the relation between arch height and leg injury in athletes is unclear. Health-related physical fitness can be assessed using four principal attributes: body composition; muscular strength and endurance; flexibility; and cardiorespiratory endurance. Factors such as the lifestyle behaviors or dietetic habits can affect physical fitness. The aim of this study is to investigate the differences in physical fitness among adults residing in different areas of Taiwan. The study was conducted between April and November 2002. Although the physical consequences of congestive heart failure are well known, its effects on patient well-being, severity of exercise intolerance, and quality of life are largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of physical fitness (as measured by O2 peak), quality of life (as measured with the WHOQOL-BREF in Taiwan), and severity of left ventricle dysfunction (as measured by left ventricle ejection fraction) in patients with congestive heart failure.Twenty patients were enrolled in this study, but only 11 had completed the ”WHOQOL-BREF”. High resolution musculoskeletal ultrasonography has been a comprehensive tool for differentiation of soft tissue mass. However, it is not commonly used as a standard examination in the diagnosis of an aneurysm. We present a case of a growing mass in the medial aspect of the left thigh status post internal fixation of periprosthetic fracture. Initial examination with a 10 MHz linear array probe revealed a blurred hypoechoic lesion at a depth of 5 cm. After switching to a 7.5 MHz curve-linear array probe, we found a well-defined, ovoid, hypoechoic cystic lesion with posterior enhancement. In color Doppler mode, a half-blue/half-red …

This 54-year-old man underlying ankylosing spondylitis suffered from double spinal cord injuries with traumatic C6/7 dislocation and a neglected L1 vertebral body fracture which progressed to transverse fracture three weeks after the injury, acting as a powerful precipitant to autonomic dysreflexia. The dysreflexic symptoms happened at least three times when he practiced sitting during mat exercise and ameliorated soon by virtue of lying down. Compared with the previous record checked three weeks ago, neurologic examination revealed alteration of sensory level and loss of deep anal sensation. Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is attributed to a spinal epidural hematoma which is not caused by incidental, traumatic, or iatrogenic (for example, lumbar puncture) procedures. SSEH is an uncommon condition causing spinal cord lesion and subsequent neurologic deficits. Spinal cord pathology is often followed by neuropathic pain which may be treated with a combination of drug regimens, such as gabapentin, tricyclic antidepressants, topic lidocaine, opioids and serotoninnorepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. We present a case of SSEH with neuropathic pain that was treated with gabapentin, morphine and imipramine. Children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) usually exhibit motor deficits and limited daily activities. Studies in recent years indicated that constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) might improve motor performance in CP patients. Combining kinematic analysis with clinical assessments, this study investigated the effect of modified CIMT (mCIMT) in four children with spastic CP immediately and one month after treatment. During the 3-week intervention, subjects underwent task-related training using the affected hand with restraint of the unaffected hand.The experimental results revealed significant improvements of the affected hand in use frequency, movement quality, grasping pattern, and bimanual coordination, both immediately and one month …

Background: Medial compartment osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most prevalent and disabling chronic conditions affecting older adults. Pressure ulcers usually occur over the ischial tuberosity of the people bound in wheelchairs. The objective of the study is to make a comparison between age, genders, and different factors of body build, including height, weight, body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, buttock circumference, and mid-upper arm circumference, on their influences upon pressure under the ischial tuberosity.This experiment is a cross-sectional comparison study. Background: MacroH2A1 is a histone variant that is closely associated with the repressed regions of chromosomes. A recent study revealed that this histone variant is highly enriched in the inactive alleles of Imprinting Control Regions (ICRs). Results: The current study investigates the potential roles of macroH2A1 in genomic imprinting by lowering the cellular levels of the macroH2A1 protein. RNAi-based macroH2A1 knockdown experiments in Neuro2A cells changed the expression levels of a subset of genes, including Peg3 and Usp29 of the Peg3 domain. Every legal case has a story behind it, and some, like this one, also have a legacy. This is a story about two immigrant tailors in Chicago-the white tailor's attempt to sell his tailor shop to the black tailor, and the racial discrimination they confronted together. One tailor, Ivan Thompson, was a black citizen of Great Britain living in Chicago, and the other, Martin Waysdorf, was a white Jew from Poland. He became a. The information accessible from a muon-spin relaxation experiment can be limited due to a lack of knowledge of the precise muon stopping site. We demonstrate here the possibility of localizing a spin polarized muon in a known stopping state in a molecular material containing fluorine. The muon-spin precession that results from the entangled nature of the muon spin and surrounding nuclear spins is sensitive to the nature of the stopping site. We use this property to identify three classes of sites that occur in molecular magnets and describe the extent to which the muon distorts its surroundings.

OXFORD, Miss. - Preserving the past is often a relay effort from one generation to the next. Such was the case for former Memphian Nancy Martin, who has donated a collection of artifacts circa 1800s to the University of Mississippi. The Smith Collection, including original land deeds signed by two former presidents and Civil War love letters, belonged to Martin's uncle James Warders Smith Jr. They were found at his Memphis home following his death there Jan. 7, 2006, at age 80.

Nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NLPHL) is a recently described type of Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL) and accounts for 5-6% of all the cases of HL. Here we report the case of an elderly man who presented to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman, with severe hypercalcemia, and was diagnosed to have stage IV NLPHL. Although the incidence of hypercalcemia is estimated to be between 1-5% in classical HL, to our knowledge this is the first report of NLPHL presenting with severe hypercalcemia.
