Physical And Psychological Effects Of Aquatic Therapy In Participants After Hip-Joint Replacement: A Pilot Study, Ilanit Weigenfeld-Lahav, Yeshayahu Hutzler, Dana Roth, Merav Hadar-Frumer

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose was to measure the outcome effects of a hydrotherapy program lasting 12 sessions on the rehabilitation of participants following joint replacement because of arthritis-related conditions. Sixteen volunteers at a postrehabilitation stage (15 women and 1 man, mean age 56.7 + 6.5 y) participated in a quasi-experimental design with simple interrupted time series aimed at improving range of motion around the hip joints, mobility (Berg Balance Scale, BBS), walking velocity in the timed up-and-go test (TUG) and scores on a quality-of-life scale (SF-36). One-way ANOVA statistics showed a significant effect between the pre- and posttest outcomes without differences between …

A Tribute To Richard O. Kummert, Dwight Drake Nov 2007

A Tribute To Richard O. Kummert, Dwight Drake

Washington Law Review

Since 1965, the Washington Law Review has had forty-three Editors-in-Chief, roughly ninety executive editors, more than seven hundred and fifty student members, and one faculty advisor—Professor Richard Kummert. As extraordinary as any period of service extending more than four decades may seem, those who know Professor Kummert consider it business as usual. As one former dean recently stated in describing Professor Kummert, "in the history of the law school, no person has been entrusted with so much responsibility by so many deans." Beyond his perennial service to the law review, Professor Kummert has single-handedly governed the school's all-important admissions program …

An Equal Protection Standard For National Origin Classifications: The Context That Matters, Jenny Rivera Nov 2007

An Equal Protection Standard For National Origin Classifications: The Context That Matters, Jenny Rivera

Washington Law Review

The Supreme Court has stated, "[c]ontext matters when reviewing race-based governmental action under the Equal Protection Clause."' Judicial review of legislative race-based classifications has been dominated by the context of the United States' history of race-based oppression and consideration of the effects of institutional racism. Racial context has also dominated judicial review of legislative classifications based on national origin. This pattern is seen, for example, in challenges to government affirmative action programs that define Latinos according to national origin subclasses. As a matter of law, these national origin-based classifications, like race-based classifications, are subject to strict scrutiny and can only …

A Reevaluation Of Some Iconographic Motifs On The Taanach Cult Stand, Brian R. Doak Nov 2007

A Reevaluation Of Some Iconographic Motifs On The Taanach Cult Stand, Brian R. Doak

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Since its discovery in 1968, the so-called “Taanach cult stand” has generated no small amount of scholarly controversy; indeed, the unique combination of images on the stand evoke a variety of interpretations, perhaps due to the sheer number of key iconographic motifs used in combination and their implications for the history of religion within the borders of ancient “Israel” in the 10th century BCE. The imagery on the Taanach stand raises a series of provocative questions regarding many recent discussions, such as: Was the Israelite national deity, YHWH, depicted iconographically in ancient Israel, and are any of these images on …

Comparison Of Distributed Versus Lumped Hydrologic Simulation Models Using Stationary And Moving Storm Events Applied To Small Synthetic Rectangular Basins And An Actual Watershed Basin, Michael Jay Shultz Nov 2007

Comparison Of Distributed Versus Lumped Hydrologic Simulation Models Using Stationary And Moving Storm Events Applied To Small Synthetic Rectangular Basins And An Actual Watershed Basin, Michael Jay Shultz

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this investigation is to compare simulations using several artificial rectangular basins and a real drainage basin for distributed and lumped hydrologic models via results obtained with the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Modeling System (MMS). Impervious watershed conditions were assumed for each simulation. A critical objective of this investigation is to assess the performance of a physically-simple lumped model compared to a more physically-complex distributed model for various storm events. Knowledge gained from this investigation may be applied to the practical problem of determining when either a distributed or lumped model may be expected to function well given …

The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348–1349, Albert Winkler Nov 2007

The Approach Of The Black Death In Switzerland And The Persecution Of Jews, 1348–1349, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

When the Black Death approached the Swiss states in 1348, the news of the approaching pestilence traveled faster than the Plague. This gave the Swiss time to react and try to prevent its arrival. The Swiss did not know what caused the Black Death, but they feared that the Jews were poisoning water wells in order to cause the plague. At Chillon and elsewhere, Jews were tortured for confessions, which were clearly worthless. In a climate of fear and severe prejudice, Jews were killed in numerous communities including Basel, Bern, Zurich, and Kyburg by being burned to death. Execution by …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Mössbauer spectra of monodispersed iron oxide nanoparticles with diameters of 4, 7, 9, and 11 nm have been measured between 4.2 and 315 K and fitted within the formalism for stochastic fluctuations of the hyperfine Hamiltonian. In this model, the hyperfine field is assumed to relax between the six ±x, ±y, and ±z directions in space with a distribution of relaxation rates that is temperature dependent. Muon spin relaxation measurements have been carried out on the 9 nm particles between 4.2 and 295 K. Both techniques reveal three regimes in the magnetic dynamics of these nanoparticles. In the low-temperature …

Experimental results obtained with our multi-parameter multi-coincidence spectrometer are presented for the (e,3e) double ionisation of Ar and (e,2e) single ionisation of small molecules. The (e,3e) measurements are discussed in terms of competition between the two double ionisation processes present under the chosen kinematics, and qualitative conclusions are given. The results for the ionisation of H2 and the outer orbital of N2 are compared with the predictions of the most elaborate available theoretical models for description of the molecular ionisation process. Overall reasonable agreement is observed and tentative interpretations for the discrepancies are discussed.

Angular And Polarization Analysis Of X-Rays Emitted From Highly-Charged, Few-Electron Ions, Stephan Fritzsche, Andrey S. Surzhykov, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Th H. Stohlker

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The recent theoretical progress in studying the x-ray emission from highly-charged, few-electron ions is reviewed. These case studies show that relativistic, high-Z ions provide a unique tool for better understanding the interplay between the electron-photon and electron-electron interactions in strong fields. Most naturally, this interplay is probed by the radiative capture of a (quasi-) free electron into the bound states of projectile ions, and by varying the charge state and the energy of the projectiles. For the capture into initially hydrogen-and lithium-like ions, here we summarize the recent results for the angular distribution and polarization of the recombination photons as …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on measurements of transfer excitation in collisions of 0.3-1.3 MeV protons with spatially oriented H2 molecules. Evidences of two center interference are found in the angular distribution of the molecule after a transfer excitation process and directly in the projectile angular scattering distributions. These features can be explained in a way which is analogous to that for the interferences in Young's classical double slit experiment: The fast projectiles preferentially capture electrons close to either of the molecular nuclei, and thereby they change their momenta and de Broglie wavelengths. The waves emerging from the two 'slits' of the …

The Economic Costs Of Inequality, Richard H. Mcadams Nov 2007

The Economic Costs Of Inequality, Richard H. Mcadams

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This brief chapter surveys some of the economic literature concerning the instrumental costs of material inequality. Economic theory predicts, and econometric evidence finds, that inequality increases crime and political corruption and, in certain circumstances, constrains growth.

Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Fairness And Simplification Act Of 2007 (H.R. 3359), Walter Hellerstein Nov 2007

Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Fairness And Simplification Act Of 2007 (H.R. 3359), Walter Hellerstein

Presentations and Speeches

Testimony before the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law addressing three questions: "First, does Congress have the constitutional authority to enact the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Fairness and Simplification Act of 2007? Second, is there historical precedent analogous to the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Fairness and Simplification Act of 2007 for congressional legislation restricting state taxing power? Third, would enactment of the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Fairness and Simplification Act of 2007 constitute an appropriate exercise of congressional power? As explained in more detail below, I believe the answer to all three questions is “yes.”"

The “People” In The Pla: Recruitment, Training, And Education In China's 80-Year-Old Military, Justin B. Liang Mr., Sarah K. Snyder Dr.

Articles & Editorials

Three conclusions were reached: (1) China’s ideal “new type” of military officer is university educated and possesses the technical competence and physical ability to handle actual combat against a modern, high-tech adversary. (2) Driven by the understanding of the critical and integral role of soldiers to the success of military modernization, China’s professional military education (PME) system is undergoing rapid changes, focusing on science, technology, and the development of leadership skills. (3) Underpinning China’s drive towards a more high-tech military is the concept of “informatization," a sophisticated idea about aligning capabilities and requirements in the face of an increasingly hybridized …

The Commerciality Doctrine As Applied To The Charitable Tax Exemption For Homes For The Aged: State And Local Tax Perspectives, David A. Brennen Nov 2007

The Commerciality Doctrine As Applied To The Charitable Tax Exemption For Homes For The Aged: State And Local Tax Perspectives, David A. Brennen

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This essay examines the question of how state and local government officials should consider federal tax law principles, like the commerciality doctrine, when they challenge state and local property tax exemptions that rely, at least in part, on tax-exempt charitable status for federal income tax purposes. In particular, this essay uses the example of continuing care retirement communities to consider tax-exempt law’s commerciality doctrine in an attempt to discern distinctions between “homes for the aged” that are “charitable,” and thus entitled to exemption, and those that are too commercial, and thus not entitled to exemption. In fact, one might say …
