Meeting The Literacy Needs Of Adult Learners Through A Community-University Partnership, Jill A. Jones

Faculty Publications and Presentations

What is the best approach to scaffolding graduate students to higher knowledge and a heightened awareness of their own pedagogy? This article addresses that key educational question by investigating and depicting one atypical scenario, a collaborative model between a university graduate Remedial Reading class and a local adult literacy coalition. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomena of signifacnt learning gains that occurred for the graduate students. The co-researchers utilized hybrid discourse and grounded theory in order to gain a new perspective on a familiar situation, the learning process that occurs within a university classroom. The educational …

Animal Science

Beef from retail and foodservice establishments in 11 US cities was evaluated using Warner–Bratzler shear (WBS) and consumer evaluation panels. Postmortem aging times ranged from3 to83d for retail and7 to 136d for foodservice with mean aging times of 22.6d and 30.1 d, respectively. For retail, the three cuts from the round – top round, bottom round, and eye of round – had the highest (P < 0.05) WBS values compared to cuts from the chuck, rib, and loin. Top loin steaks had the lowest(P < 0.05) WBS value compared to ribeye and top sirloin foodservice steaks. Retail bone-in top loin, top loin, ribeye, T-bone, and porterhouse received the highest (P < 0.05) ratings by consumers for overall like and like tenderness. Quality grade had little or no effect on foodservice sensory evaluations. Improvements in round tenderness are needed to increase consumer acceptability.

Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry Nov 2007

Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry

UCHC Articles - Research

This study determined whether, and by how much, the cost-effectiveness of contingency management (CM) varied across the eight clinics in the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network MIEDAR trial. Incremental costs, incremental outcomes, and incremental costeffectiveness ratios (ICERs) of CM compared to usual care were calculated, compared and contrasted for each of the clinics. Results showed that the incremental cost of using CM compared to usual care varied by a factor of 1.9 across the clinics, ranging from an additional $306 to an additional $582 per patient. The effect of CM on the longest duration of continuous stimulant …

Concurrent Brief Versus Intensive Smoking Intervention During Alcohol Dependence Treatment, Mark D. Litt, Judith L. Cooney, Cheryl A. Oncken Nov 2007

Concurrent Brief Versus Intensive Smoking Intervention During Alcohol Dependence Treatment, Mark D. Litt, Judith L. Cooney, Cheryl A. Oncken

UCHC Articles - Research

Alcohol dependent smokers (N = 118) enrolled in an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program were randomized to a concurrent brief or intensive smoking cessation intervention. Brief treatment consisted of a 15-minute counseling session with 5 min follow-up. Intensive intervention consisted of three one-hour counseling sessions plus eight weeks of nicotine patch therapy. The cigarette abstinence rate, verified by breath CO, was significantly higher for intensive (27.5%) versus brief (6.6%) treatment at one month post quit date but not at six months when abstinence rates fell to 9.1% and 2.1%. Smoking treatment assignment did not significantly impact alcohol outcomes. …

Variation In Gabra2 Predicts Drinking Behavior In Project Match Subjects, Lance O. Bauer, Jonathan Covault, Ofer Harel, Sourish Das, Henry R. Kranzler Nov 2007

Variation In Gabra2 Predicts Drinking Behavior In Project Match Subjects, Lance O. Bauer, Jonathan Covault, Ofer Harel, Sourish Das, Henry R. Kranzler

UCHC Articles - Research

Background Previous studies have demonstrated, and replicated, an association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the GABRA2 gene and risk for alcohol dependence. The present study examines the association of a GABRA2 SNP with another definition of alcohol involvement and with the effects of psychosocial treatment. Methods European-American subjects (n=812, 73.4% male) provided DNA samples for the analysis. All were participants in Project MATCH, a multi-center randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of three types of psychosocial treatment for alcoholism: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), or Twelve Step Facilitation (TSF). The daily probabilities of drinking and heavy …

Xml Encoding Of Features Describing Rule-Based Modeling Of Reaction Networks With Multi-Component Molecular Complexes, Michael L. Blinov, Ion I. Moraru Nov 2007

Xml Encoding Of Features Describing Rule-Based Modeling Of Reaction Networks With Multi-Component Molecular Complexes, Michael L. Blinov, Ion I. Moraru

UCHC Articles - Research

Multi-state molecules and multi-component complexes are commonly involved in cellular signaling. Accounting for molecules that have multiple potential states, such as a protein that may be phosphorylated on multiple residues, and molecules that combine to form heterogeneous complexes located among multiple compartments, generates an effect of combinatorial complexity. Models involving relatively few signaling molecules can include thousands of distinct chemical species. Several software tools (StochSim, BioNetGen) are already available to deal with combinatorial complexity. Such tools need information standards if models are to be shared, jointly evaluated and developed. Here we discuss XML conventions that can be adopted for modeling …

Suspension And The Extrajudicial Constitution, Trevor W. Morrison Nov 2007

Suspension And The Extrajudicial Constitution, Trevor W. Morrison

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

What happens when Congress suspends the writ of habeas corpus? Everyone agrees that suspending habeas makes that particular - and particularly important - judicial remedy unavailable for those detained by the government. But does suspension also affect the underlying legality of the detention? That is, in addition to making the habeas remedy unavailable, does suspension convert an otherwise unlawful detention into a lawful one? Some, including Justice Scalia in the 2004 case Hamdi v. Rumsfeld and Professor David Shapiro in an important recent article, answer yes.

This Article answers no. I previously offered that same answer in a symposium essay; …
