Using Accelerometry And Wearable Gps Units To Measure Trail Users’ Physical Activity: Preliminary Findings, Philip J. Troped, Charles E. Matthews, Ellen K. Cromley, Steven J. Melly, Marcelo S. Oliveira, Jean Wolf Nov 2007

Using Accelerometry And Wearable Gps Units To Measure Trail Users’ Physical Activity: Preliminary Findings, Philip J. Troped, Charles E. Matthews, Ellen K. Cromley, Steven J. Melly, Marcelo S. Oliveira, Jean Wolf

GIS Day

In recent years, there has been a growing body of public health research examining the role of community trails and paths in the promotion and maintenance of physical activity. However, little is known about how much activity occurs on trails, the impact of community trails on overall physical activity levels or about the relationships between specific trail characteristics and utilization. The integration of activity measurements technologies, specifically accelerometers and wearable global positioning system (GPS) units that can track spatial patterns of activity, provide a unique opportunity to study some of these issues. The current transdisciplinarystudy builds on a previous Active …

Estimating The Parking Lot Footprint Across The Great Lakes Region, Amélie Y. Davis, Bryan C. Pijanowski, Kimberly D. Robinson, Paul B. Kidwell Nov 2007

Estimating The Parking Lot Footprint Across The Great Lakes Region, Amélie Y. Davis, Bryan C. Pijanowski, Kimberly D. Robinson, Paul B. Kidwell

GIS Day

In this study we determine the areal footprint of parking lots in the Great Lakes Basinand outline policies to provide smart growth of parking lots. Our poster addresses the question: “what is the areal footprint and the ensuing economic and ecological consequences of parking lots?”. Our research addresses whether land use in the in the Great Lakes is efficient and sustainable. To that end, we use high resolution aerial photography and GIS to estimate the areal footprint of parking lots in relationship to: (1) the total urban area; (2) the number of parking spaces versus the population of the county; …

Using Gis To Predict The New Range Boundary Of An Old Pest Insect, Jeffrey D. Holland Nov 2007

Using Gis To Predict The New Range Boundary Of An Old Pest Insect, Jeffrey D. Holland

GIS Day

The use of GIS to gather and analyze insect population data in changing habitats is presented. By taking a "larval time travel" approach, standard dendrochronology techniques to date larval scars of species of longhorned beetles on living trees are used to determine the exact year that a species was within a given tree. By combining this information with detailed studies of the trees, forest habitat, and forest maps collected over the same period by other Purdue University researchers, it is possible to correlate changes in the borer prevalence and occurrence with changes to the forest habitat.

Numerical Study Of Fully Developed Laminar And Turbulent Flow Through Microchannels With Longitudinal Microstructures, Kevin B. Jeffs Nov 2007

Numerical Study Of Fully Developed Laminar And Turbulent Flow Through Microchannels With Longitudinal Microstructures, Kevin B. Jeffs

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the increase of application in a number of emerging technologies, a growing amount of research has focused on the reduction of drag in microfluidic transport. A novel approach reported in the recent literature is to fabricate micro-ribs and cavities in the channel wall that are then treated with a hydrophobic coating. Such surfaces have been termed super- or ultrahydrophobic and the contact area between the flowing liquid and the solid wall is greatly reduced. Further, due to the scale of the micropatterned structures, the liquid is unable to wet the cavity and a liquid meniscus is formed between …

Understanding Ethanol Plant Economics: Will Boom Turn Bust?, David J. Peters Nov 2007

Understanding Ethanol Plant Economics: Will Boom Turn Bust?, David J. Peters

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska, along with several other Midwestern states, is in the middle of an ethanol boom. In the past few years a combination of high oil prices, cheap corn and favorable government policy have driven expansion of the industry. In turn, this has generated an unprecedented amount of industrial investment in many rural communities. However, local governments and economic developers have little information regarding the long-term economic viability of these plants. This information gap limits the ability of local governments to make informed public policy decisions about ethanol plants in their community, especially in terms of local tax incentives and abatements.

Evaluating The Use Of University Libraries In Nigeria: A Case Study Of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike, Akobundu Dike Ugah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study evaluated the use of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Library, Umudike, Nigeria. The population of the study comprised 1,000 library registered users. A random sample of 200 was selected and administered a questionnaire. There were 154 usable responses. Result showed that a total of 130 (84.5%) used the library on daily basis, 50 (32.5%) came to read library books, and 42 (27.3%) to consult reference materials. Textbooks were the most used reading material and were located by direct approach to the shelves. Organizational Form Of Disease Management Programs: A Transaction Cost Analysis, Nahush Chandaver Nov 2007

Organizational Form Of Disease Management Programs: A Transaction Cost Analysis, Nahush Chandaver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Patient care programs such as wellness, preventive care and specifically disease management programs, which target the chronically ill population, are designed to reduce healthcare costs and improve health, while promoting the efficient use of healthcare resources, and increasing productivity. The organizational form adopted by the health plan for these programs, i.e. in-sourced vs. outsourced is an important factor in the success of these programs and the extent to which the core objectives listed above are fulfilled.

Transaction cost economics aims to explain the working arrangement for an organization and to explain why sourcing decisions were made by considering alternate organizational …

The Validity Of Personality Trait Interactions For The Prediction Of Managerial Job Performance, Amy M. Taylor Nov 2007

The Validity Of Personality Trait Interactions For The Prediction Of Managerial Job Performance, Amy M. Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Personality variables have been shown to be significant predictors of job performance (Barrick & Mount, 1991; Tett, Jackson, & Rothstein, 1991). Recent advances in methodology for analyzing personality-job performance relationships indicate that interactions among traits may yield incremental validity. Job types in which performance has been shown to relate to trait interactions include clerical jobs, jobs with high interpersonal components, and jobs in realistic and conventional contexts, (Witt, Burke, Barrick, & Mount, 2002; Burke & Witt, 2002; and Burke & Witt, 2004). This study examined the validity of trait interactions for the prediction of managerial job performance. Hypotheses included a …
