Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The pathogenic spirochete Leptospira interrogans disseminates throughout its hosts via the bloodstream, then invades and colonizes a variety of host tissues. Infectious leptospires are resistant to killing by their hosts' alternative pathway of complement-mediated killing, and interact with various host extracellular matrix (ECM) components. The LenA outer surface protein (formerly called LfhA and Lsa24) was previously shown to bind the host ECM component laminin and the complement regulators factor H and factor H-related protein-1. We now demonstrate that infectious L. interrogans contain five additional paralogs of lenA, which we designated lenB, lenC, lenD, lenE and lenF …

Ideal models of complex materials must satisfy all available information about the system. Generally, this information consists of experimental data, information implicit to sophisticated interatomic interactions and potentially other a priori information. By jointly imposing first-principles or tight-binding information in conjunction with experimental data, we have developed a method: experimentally constrained molecular relaxation (ECMR) that uses all of the information available. We apply the method to model medium range order in amorphous silicon using fluctuation electron microscopy (FEM) data as experimental information. The Boiler Green Initiative (BGI) is a student-run organization working to improve environmental sustainability at the Purdue University West Lafayette campus. A main goal of BGI's is to install a green roof on an existing building on campus that is being replaced. We discuss the benefits of green roofs, the feasibility of having one installed on the Armory's roof and the various monitoring options we have researched. Flat roofs are especially amenable to the green roof system, so a building with a flat roof or section of flat roof that is scheduled for repair is the ideal choice. The Armory …
