Preheating In Derivatively-Coupled Inflation Models, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Mark Trodden, Eric J. West
Preheating In Derivatively-Coupled Inflation Models, Christian Armendariz-Picon, Mark Trodden, Eric J. West
Physics - All Scholarship
We study preheating in theories where the inflaton couples derivatively to scalar and gauge fields. Such couplings may dominate in natural models of inflation, in which the flatness of the inflaton potential is related to an approximate shift symmetry of the inflaton. We compare our results with previously studied models with non-derivative couplings. For sufficiently heavy scalar matter, parametric resonance is ineffective in reheating the universe, because the couplings of the inflaton to matter are very weak. If scalar matter fields are light, derivative couplings lead to a mild long-wavelength instability that drives matter fields to non-zero expectation values. In …

Literacy Education In School : Research Perspectives From The Past, For The Future, Peter Freebody
Literacy Education In School : Research Perspectives From The Past, For The Future, Peter Freebody
Australian Education Review
AER 52 aims to expand our understanding of the nature of literacy at a time when public and private lives have become increasingly literacy-dependent, and literacy demands more complex and sophisticated. This review of the research literature is guided by the view that what passes for effective literacy education will differ depending on language, culture, history and the technologies of communication and knowledge production. Section 1 describes the large body of research relating to the teaching and learning of literacy that emerges from a wide range of discipline bases. It details the complexities associated with defining literacy, and it outlines …
The Identification Of Factors Influencing The Diffusion Of An Assessment Innovation On A University Campus, Ann Louise Mccann
The Identification Of Factors Influencing The Diffusion Of An Assessment Innovation On A University Campus, Ann Louise Mccann
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This study explored the extent of and reasons for the adoption of an innovation (REAL) on a university campus (MSU). REAL was an assessment system to improve teaching, student learning and accountability. A mixed methods approach was used, with an electronic survey of faculty (n = 568) and telephone interviews with adopters (n = 9). Using a stratified random sample from all eight colleges, the survey measured perceptions of REAL related to: relative advantage, trialability, result demonstrability, visibility, compatibility, complexity, image and voluntariness. The interview questions also explored the strategies of senior administrative support, collaborative leadership, flexible vision, staff development, …
The Fine Line Of Perfectionism: Is It A Strength Or A Weakness In The Workplace?, Lindsay Bousman
The Fine Line Of Perfectionism: Is It A Strength Or A Weakness In The Workplace?, Lindsay Bousman
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Perfectionism has been traditionally researched in the clinical psychology domain. While some research has used a normal student population, research applying perfectionism theories to a normal adult population working in Corporate America has not been conducted. Current research suggests two distinct types of perfectionism, maladaptive and adaptive, with different consequences. In this research, maladaptive and adaptive perfectionism were used to determine that traditional perfectionism measures can be used with a working adult sample to achieve similar psychometric properties, and to preliminarily test hypotheses related to their relationship with other individual difference variables. Second, maladaptive and adaptive perfectionism were used to …

New Ways To Collect Data In The Antarctic, Walker O. Smith, Vernon Asper
New Ways To Collect Data In The Antarctic, Walker O. Smith, Vernon Asper
Faculty Publications
Conducting Antarctic research is challenging. Not only is the environment difficult, given low temperatures, high winds, and ice cover, but also the availability of sampling platforms is limited. The U.S. National Science Foundation has only two vessels that can routinely operate in ice‐covered waters, the research vessel/icebreaker N.B. Palmer and the Antarctic research support vessel L.M. Gould. The restricted availability of vessels makes research operations difficult to schedule, especially during austral spring and summer. Traditional sampling methods (those confined to ships and moorings) have provided insights into distributions and processes in the Southern Ocean, but new research questions require new …

The Effects Of Deep Breathing And Positive Imagery On Stress And Coherence Levels Among College-Age Women, Sheerah R. Tice
The Effects Of Deep Breathing And Positive Imagery On Stress And Coherence Levels Among College-Age Women, Sheerah R. Tice
Senior Honors Theses
Stress is steadily becoming a problem of epidemic proportions in American society. Diseases and other health problems that are a direct result of high, chronic stress levels are on the rise. As bad as they are, the physical effects of stress are not the only concern. There are also mental and emotional concerns to increased and continuous stress levels. It is therefore vitally important for people to learn effective methods for reducing stress. This study investigates two techniques done together, deep breathing and positive imagery, for their effectiveness in reducing stress and increasing coherence. The sample consisted of thirty 18-26 …

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In National Periodicals: 1991-2000, Casey William Olson
The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In National Periodicals: 1991-2000, Casey William Olson
Theses and Dissertations
From 1991 through 2000, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints experienced a greater volume of national periodical attention than ever before in its history. This thesis surveys what was written about the Church in national magazines during that time and provides analysis of the effect of those writings on the Church's public image. National periodicals may serve as an important gauge of the Church's public image because they address topics of national interest and also help to formulate public opinion on those topics. This study thus provides a basis for determining how the Church fared in terms of …
The Play's The Thing: Investigating The Potential Of Performance Pedagogy, Tamara Lynn Scoville
The Play's The Thing: Investigating The Potential Of Performance Pedagogy, Tamara Lynn Scoville
Theses and Dissertations
In the last ten years there has been a resurgence of interest in teaching Shakespeare through performance. However, most literature on the topic continues to focus on the pragmatic selling points of how performance makes Shakespeare fun and understandable while remaining surprisingly silent on issues of theory and ethics. By investigating the ethical implications of performance pedagogy as it affects our students' construction of identity, empathy, and pluralistic tolerance we can better understand and discuss the potential of performance pedagogy in relation to the ethical goals of the Humanities. Performance Pedagogy has particular ethical potential due to the structure of …

Operation Restoration: How Can Patent Holders Protect Themselves From Medimmune?, Stephanie Chu
Duke Law & Technology Review
The Supreme Court’s recent decision in MedImmune v. Genentech shifts the balance of power in license agreements from patent holders to their licensees. This iBrief outlines the potential implications of the new rules on all stages of patent prosecution and protection. Further, it evaluates remedial contract provisions patent holders may include in future license agreements and how these provisions may mitigate the decision’s effects on preexisting commercial relationships.

Alcina, Taras Krysa, Phillip Lenberg
Alcina, Taras Krysa, Phillip Lenberg
Opera
Alcina was written at a time in Handel's career in London when the company faced competition from a rival company and a resulting financial pinch. There was no loss in the master's artistry, however. Premiered at the new theatre at Covent Garden in 1735, Alcina was sufficiently successful to be revived for the following two seasons. It inexplicably fell into an extended period of neglect thereafter, to be revived once again by Franco Zeffirelli for the young Joan Sutherland in 1957.

The Descent Of Christ In Ephesians 4:9: Its Impact Upon The Use Of The Apostles' Creed, Matthew C. Hinson
The Descent Of Christ In Ephesians 4:9: Its Impact Upon The Use Of The Apostles' Creed, Matthew C. Hinson
Senior Honors Theses
Confusion runs rampant when it comes to certain theological issues such as the descent of Christ in Ephesians 4:9. Over the centuries, three main interpretations have arisen to explain this enigmatic text. The possible interpretations are that the descent was the Descensus ad Infernos during which Christ visited hell during the three days that He was dead, that the descent was the Incarnation of Christ, or that the descent was the coming of Christ as the Spirit at Pentecost to give spiritual gifts to the believers.
In this paper, these three interpretive options are evaluated on the basis of the …
The Authorship Of The Pastoral Epistles, Brandon E. Carter
The Authorship Of The Pastoral Epistles, Brandon E. Carter
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis discusses issues related to the authorship of the epistles of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus. The authenticity of the Pastoral Epistles has become the subject of much debate in the last two centuries, and the writer explores the major positions on authorship. Along with the traditional view that the Pastorals were written by Paul the apostle, contemporary theories on pseudonymity and the implications of such a view on canonicity are considered. The historical evidence, theological content, and literary style and diction of the epistles are examined in defense of Pauline authorship.
