Construction Of Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For Complicated Cathodic Protection System, Ai-Ping Wang, Min Du, Qing-Zhang Wang, Sheng-Shan Cao, Ji-Xing Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

When condensers with carbon steel waterbox and titanium tube structure were protected by SACP in an ocean beach power plant, while seawater were used to be cooling water, carbon steel was under-protected and Titanium was over-protected,because their protective potential are less than-0.85V(vs.SCE) and more than-0.75V(vs.SCE) separately. In order to optimize the SACP design, potential distribution of two materials must be obtained during the SACP process. In the lab, carbon steel waterbox and Titanium tube model(Q235-Ti model) were set up.A series of electrochemical techniques(steady polarization, galvanostatic charge technique)were used to obtain reasonable boundary condition and surface form of two materials during the SACP process. The experiments were carried out …

Research Of 2,2′-Dipyridine On Electroless Copper Plating Using Sodium Hypophosphite As Reductant, Bin Yang, Fang-Zu Yang, Ling Huang, Shu-Kai Xu, Guang-Hua Yao, Shao-Min Zhou Nov 2007

Research Of 2,2′-Dipyridine On Electroless Copper Plating Using Sodium Hypophosphite As Reductant, Bin Yang, Fang-Zu Yang, Ling Huang, Shu-Kai Xu, Guang-Hua Yao, Shao-Min Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

In the bath of the electroless copper plating using sodium hypophosphite as reductant, the effects of 2,2′-dipyridine on the deposition rate, anodic oxidation of sodium hypophosphite, cathodic reduction of copper ions, surface morphologies, structure and the existing status of the deposit components were examined. The results showed that, 2,2′-dipyridine hindered the electroless deposition.Experiments of liner sweep voltammetry (LSV) indicated that,as the addition of 2,2′-dipyridine to the electrolyte, the oxidation peak potential of sodium hypophosphite shifted to a more negative value but the peak current decreased; the reducing peak potential of copper ions moved to a more negative value whereas the …

Mythic Symbols Of Batman, John J. Darowski Nov 2007

Mythic Symbols Of Batman, John J. Darowski

Theses and Dissertations

Batman has become a fixture in the popular consciousness of America. Since his first publication in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, he has never ceased publication, appearing in multiple titles every month as well as successfully transitioning into other media such as film and television. A focused analysis of the character will reveal that Batman has achieved and maintained this cultural resonance for almost seventy years by virtue of attaining the status of a postmodern American mythology. In both theme and function, Batman has several direct connections to ancient mythology and has adapted that form into a distinctly American archetype. …

Synthesis Of Optimal Arrays For Mimo And Diversity Systems, Britton T. Quist Nov 2007

Synthesis Of Optimal Arrays For Mimo And Diversity Systems, Britton T. Quist

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a method for determining the optimal antenna element radiation characteristics which maximize diversity gain given a specific power angular spectrum of the propagation environment. The method numerically constructs the eigenfunctions of the covariance operator for the scenario subject to constraints on the power radiated by each antenna as well as the level of supergain allowed in the solution. The optimal antenna characteristics are produced in terms of radiating current distributions along with their resulting radiation patterns. The results reveal that the optimal antennas can provide significantly more diversity gain than that provided by a simple practical design. …

Understanding Patenting Decisions: A Classroom Experiment, Amalia Yiannaka Nov 2007

Understanding Patenting Decisions: A Classroom Experiment, Amalia Yiannaka

Cornhusker Economics

Innovations are crucial to the future success of firms, with most products having only a limited life cycle. When innovations occur, the firm must decide the best way to protect their intellectual property; this essentially comes down to keeping the innovation a trade secret or filing for a patent. Teaching students the basics of intellectual property protection is not difficult. Most are familiar with the general concept of patent protection and have some understanding as to why patents are an important tool available to firms and individual innovators. However, an in-depth analysis of the patenting decision making process can be …

Publishing Original Content In An Institutional Repository, Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Institutional repositories (IRs) have been developed and promoted primarily as a means to re-publish scholarly content previously published elsewhere—usually in journals, festschriften, or collections of articles. This essay discusses the use of IRs as the originating publisher of materials not previously published elsewhere, and assesses their potential use as a viable “first resort” for scholarly publication and an already existing alternative to traditional commercial or university presses.

Construction Of A Calcium Matter-Wave Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson Nov 2007

Construction Of A Calcium Matter-Wave Interferometer, Christopher Joseph Erickson

Theses and Dissertations

I describe the construction of a calcium matter-wave interferometer. The interferometer is based on a Ramsey-Borde scheme, and uses a thermal beam of atoms excited by an optical-frequency transition in calcium. In our experiment four pi/2 pulses of light are delivered to the atoms, which split and recombine the wave functions of the atoms. Our experimental design minimizes first-order Doppler shifts, and allows for the cancellation of systematic errors including phase shifts due to rotation and acceleration. I describe the individual components of the interferometer and its assembly. The requirements for the electronics used in the experiment as well as …

Longitudinal Data With Follow-Up Truncated By Death: Finding A Match Between Analysis Method And Research Aims, Brenda Kurland, Laura Lee Johnson, Paula Diehr Nov 2007

Longitudinal Data With Follow-Up Truncated By Death: Finding A Match Between Analysis Method And Research Aims, Brenda Kurland, Laura Lee Johnson, Paula Diehr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Diverse analysis approaches have been proposed to distinguish data missing due to death from nonresponse, and to summarize trajectories of longitudinal data truncated by death. We demonstrate how these analysis approaches arise from factorizations of the distribution of longitudinal data and survival information. Models are illustrated using hypothetical data examples (cognitive functioning in older adults, and quality of life under hospice care) and up to 10 annual assessments of longitudinal cognitive functioning data for 3814 participants in an observational study. For unconditional models, deaths do not occur, deaths are independent of the longitudinal response, or the unconditional longitudinal response averages …
