A Lower Estimate For The Norm Of The Kerzman-Stein Operator, Michael Bolt Dec 2007

A Lower Estimate For The Norm Of The Kerzman-Stein Operator, Michael Bolt

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We establish an elementary lower estimate for the norm of the Kerzman-Stein operator for a smooth, bounded domain. The estimate involves the boundary length and logarithmic capacity. The estimate is tested on model domains for which the norm is known explicitly. It is shown that the estimate is sharp for an annulus and a strip, and is asymptotically sharp for an ellipse and a wedge. © 2007 Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium.

Design And Real-Time Control Of Shipboard Power System Testbed, Pradeep Pant Dec 2007

Design And Real-Time Control Of Shipboard Power System Testbed, Pradeep Pant

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this thesis is to design and test a small scale testbed for the all-electric shipboard power distribution system. Shipboard power system is increasingly becoming more reconfigurable, and multi-agent systems are developed to automate routine operation and emergency reconfiguration. Underlying algorithms of these systems have been verified using software simulation tools. However, these simulators run in soft realtime by using simple mathematical models to represent the physical system. These models do not incorporate every aspect of the physical system. A testbed provides a cost effective physical environment to verify these algorithms and control techniques in the real world. …

Comparative Study In Stereographic Reading, Alberto E. Santiago Dec 2007

Comparative Study In Stereographic Reading, Alberto E. Santiago

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Viewing a Single Image Random Dot Stereogram (SIRDS) or autostereogram picture requires careful concentration from the viewer. The concentration necessary to perceive depth may affect the performance of the reading process. We are studying if information perceived by way of a stereogram is better retained in memory compared to normal reading without stereo vision. To measure subject's memory performance we administered a questionnaire after a stereographic experience containing a readable story. We discovered that exposing subjects to stereographic information has a slight advantage on the ability to remember precise details of the information read.

Evaluating Investment Alternatives Using Modern Mathematical Models: A Theoretical And Applied Study At The National Insurance Company, Ibrahim Muhammad Al-Jazrawi, Emad Salem Al-Qarah Lusi Dec 2007

Evaluating Investment Alternatives Using Modern Mathematical Models: A Theoretical And Applied Study At The National Insurance Company, Ibrahim Muhammad Al-Jazrawi, Emad Salem Al-Qarah Lusi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Due to the inherent nature of insurance activities, insurance companies accumulate substantial capital derived from premiums collected from policyholders; to ensure these funds do not remain idle, they are strategically deployed across diverse investment fields and instruments to generate profitable returns. Consequently, to direct these funds toward the most suitable investment tools or to determine the feasibility of various opportunities, a rigorous evaluation process is essential. While several mathematical models exist for assessing investment alternatives within the insurance sector, it is imperative to evaluate these investments using an appropriate mathematical framework that maximizes returns while minimizing risks. This approach must …

Because the studying of time series can get by building, analysis the models and then forecasting gives the priority for the practicing in different fields, therefore the identification and selection of the model is of great importance in spite of its difficulties. The selection of a standard methods has the ability for estimation the errors in the estimated the parameters for the model, and there will be a balance between the suitability and …

Strengthening Strategic Capital, Saad Ali Al-Anzi Dec 2007

Strengthening Strategic Capital, Saad Ali Al-Anzi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Most Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) agree that Strategic Capital represents an organization’s capacity to formulate successful plans and execute appropriate strategies by leveraging a broad spectrum of employees' cognitive frameworks, knowledge, ideas, and perceptions. These elements must be integrated into sound human interactions that foster the development of Organizational Social Capital. Building upon this profound and interconnected concept, the current article examines Peter Smith’s work, "Enhancing Strategic Capital," published in the Handbook of Business Strategy (September 2006). The article discusses the holistic approach to employee inclusion as a core organizational belief and a critical dimension of successful strategic planning. Just …

Singapore's Exchange Rate Policy: Some Implementation Issues, Hwee Kwan Chow Dec 2007

Singapore's Exchange Rate Policy: Some Implementation Issues, Hwee Kwan Chow

Research Collection School Of Economics

Reflecting the small open nature of its economy, Singapore has adopted an exchange rate-centered monetary policy framework since 1981. The exchange rate regime in Singapore is an intermediate regime that follows the basket-band-crawl system. With this managed float system, the MAS has successfully deterred speculators from attacking the domestic currency for most of the past three decades. At the same time, the flexibility accorded by the managed float system aided Singapore in escaping from the 1997–1998 Asian crisis relatively unscathed. In order to advance our understanding of the hitherto successful operation of Singapore's exchange rate policy, we examine the following …

Long Run Covariance Matrices For Fractionally Integrated Processes, Peter C. B. Phillips, Sik Kim Chang Dec 2007

Long Run Covariance Matrices For Fractionally Integrated Processes, Peter C. B. Phillips, Sik Kim Chang

Research Collection School Of Economics

An asymptotic expansion is given for the autocovariance matrix of a vector of stationary long-memory processes with memory parameters d ∈ [0,½). The theory is then applied to deliver formulas for the long-run covariance matrices of multivariate time series with long memory.Phillips acknowledges partial support from a Kelly Fellowship and from the NSF under grant SES 04-142254. This may be proved directly using a Fourier integral asymptotic expansion when the spectrum of the short-memory component is analytic.

Geographic Decomposition Of Inequality In Health And Wealth: Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii Dec 2007

Geographic Decomposition Of Inequality In Health And Wealth: Evidence From Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii

Research Collection School Of Economics

The small-area estimation developed by Elbers, Lanjouw and Lanjouw (2002, 2003), in which a census and a survey are combined to produce the estimates of welfare measures for small geographic areas, has become a standard tool for poverty analysis in developing countries. The small-area estimates are typically plotted on a map, which are commonly called a poverty map. Poverty maps proved useful for policy analysis and formulation, and have become increasingly popular among policy-makers and researchers. In Cambodia, poverty maps have been used by various international organizations, ministries and non-governmental organizations for analyzing the poverty situations for their operation areas, …

Global Analysis Of An Expectations Augmented Evolutionary Dynamics, Angelo Antoci, Antonio Gay, Massimiliano Landi, Pier Luigi Sacco Dec 2007

Global Analysis Of An Expectations Augmented Evolutionary Dynamics, Angelo Antoci, Antonio Gay, Massimiliano Landi, Pier Luigi Sacco

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider a deterministic evolutionary model where players form expectations about future play. Players are not fully rational and have expectations that change over time in response to current payoffs and feedback from the past. We provide a complete characterization of the qualitative dynamics so induced for a two strategies population game, and relate our findings to standard evolutionary dynamics and equilibrium selection when agents have rational forward looking expectations.

Chinese Loyalty To Supervisor Questionnaire Development, Ding-Yu Jiang, Bor-Shuian Cheng, Chi-Ying Cheng, Li-Fang Chou Dec 2007

Chinese Loyalty To Supervisor Questionnaire Development, Ding-Yu Jiang, Bor-Shuian Cheng, Chi-Ying Cheng, Li-Fang Chou

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Loyalty to supervisor is a prevalent but under-investigated phenomenon in Chinese organizations. One plausible reason for this is the lack of a reliable and valid measure of loyalty in the Chinese context. This study aims to develop a valid measure of Chinese loyalty to supervisor. In Study 1, we identify a four-dimension construct of loyalty to supervisor that consists of 11 sub-dimensions (factors) on the basis of loyalty literature. The four dimensions are: identification with supervisor, task assistance, obedience, and sacrifice for supervisor. In Study 2, a 40-item Chinese loyalty to supervisor scale was developed and examined by three independent …

What Allows Teachers To Extend Student Thinking During Whole-Group Discussions, Nesrin Cengiz Dec 2007

What Allows Teachers To Extend Student Thinking During Whole-Group Discussions, Nesrin Cengiz

Dissertations

Research indicates that extending students' mathematical thinking during whole-group discussions is challenging, even for the most experienced teachers. That is, it is challenging for teachers to help students move beyond their initial mathematical observations and solutions during whole-group discussions. To better understand this phenomena, the teaching of six experienced elementary school teachers, who had been teaching aStandards-based curriculum for several years and had participated in a multi-year professional development project focused on that curriculum, is explored in this study. In particular, two issues are addressed: what it looks like to extend student thinking during whole-group discussions and how …

Extensions Of Two-Part Tests To Compare K Independent Populations, Marwan Daoud Dec 2007

Extensions Of Two-Part Tests To Compare K Independent Populations, Marwan Daoud

Dissertations

We consider two-part models that are mixtures of a point-mass variable with all mass at zero and a continuous random variable. The model may assume a particular distributionh(x) for the continuous part such as a log-normal or a gamma. The response variable is defined as y=(x, d), where d=1 if x > 0 and d=0 if x = 0. The probability distribution function has the following form: fx,d=p 1-d×1-p ×hx d.

Lachenbruch (1976, 2001) proposed several tests to compare means of two populations for this type of data. We proposed a two-part Wald test and …

Audio-Assisted Reading With Digital Audiobooks For Upper Elementary Students With Reading Disabilities, Kelli J. Esteves

Dissertations

Audio-assisted reading has been used as an effective instructional intervention for students with learning disabilities (Carbo, 1978; Gilbert, Williams, & McLaughlin, 1996) and with struggling readers (Chomsky, 1976; Hollingsworth, 1978; Hoskisson & Krohm, 1974; Koskinen, Blum, Bisson, Phillips, Creamer, & Baker, 2000; Rasinski, 1990). The strategy involves reading along while listening to an audio recording of a fluent model (Evans, 1997).

The goal of this study was to compare the efficacy of audio-assisted reading with digital audiobooks against the traditional practice of sustained silent reading in terms of reading fluency rates and reading attitude scores with upper elementary students with …

Structure And Excitations In Metal Ammonia Compounds, Xue Wang Dec 2007

Structure And Excitations In Metal Ammonia Compounds, Xue Wang

Dissertations

This work has two parts. In the first part, inelastic x-ray scattering was used to measure the plasmon excitations in liquid lithium ammonia systems. The measurements were carried out for different metal concentrations, 8 mole per metal (MPM), 10 MPM, 11 MPM, 16 MPM and 20 MPM of temperature 200K. The data were analyzed to determine the plasmon energy and the linewidth as a function of momentum for each metal concentration. Deviations from the random phase approximation (RPA) in the jellium model increase as the concentration is lowered.

In the second part of this work, elastic x-ray scattering was used …

Deconvolution And Segmentation Of Ground Penetrating Radar Images, Vincent Krause Dec 2007

Deconvolution And Segmentation Of Ground Penetrating Radar Images, Vincent Krause

Masters Theses

Ground Penetrating Radar is a valuable tool for infrastructure condition evaluation as well as in archaeology and geology. The image produced by a GPR scan can be difficult to interpret due to the weak reflection amplitude, the overlap of reflections, and due to outside interference. This thesis proposes an algorithm to automate GPR scan interpretation. This will enable maintenance engineers to read GPR scans quickly and accurately.

The proposed algorithm framework uses an optimization-based deconvolution technique followed by a segmentation process. Each column of the image is deconvoluted and thus reducing them to a list of ordered pairs of reflection …
