A Critique Of The Global Trafficking Discourse And U.S. Policy, Moshoula Capous Desyllas Dec 2007

A Critique Of The Global Trafficking Discourse And U.S. Policy, Moshoula Capous Desyllas

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article examines the dominant discourse on trafficking in persons and the implementation of international and U.S. policy to address trafficking globally. Features of the United Nations Protocol and the Trafficking in Victims Protection Act demonstrate how trafficking frameworks currently in place contain underlying fears of migration and female sexuality. The implications of policy on the construction of third world women as "victims to be saved" through governments, National Government Organizations, feminists and the media will show how these misrespresentations only reinforce racism and dualistic simplifications of a complex issue. An emphasis is placed on the importance of women's agency …

Social Functioning: A Sociological Common Base For Social Work Practice, Thomas J. Blakely, Gregory M. Dziadosz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article describes the experience of a social work mental health agency with Social Role Theory (SRT), that is an organizing concept for the delivery of its assessment and treatment program. SRT has been called the process variable of the program, meaning how services are delivered. Social functioning, a concept taken from SRT, is a treatment outcome. The overall purposes of the article are to describe the contribution of sociology to social work practice, and to advance the argument that social functioning is a common base for social work practice generally.

Bullet-Induced Synovitis As A Cause Of Secondary Osteoarthritis Of The Hip Joint: A Case Report And Review Of Literature, A Rehman, Masood Umer, Yasir J Sepah, Muhammad A Wajid

Department of Surgery Docs

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

With increasing prevalence of gunshot injuries we are seeing more patients with retained bullet fragments lodged in their bodies. Embedded lead bullets are usually considered inert after their kinetic energy has dissipated hence these are not removed routinely. However, exposure of any foreign body to synovial fluid may lead to rapid degradation and hence result in systemic absorption, causing local and systemic symptoms. We present the case of a thirty year old man who came to our out patient department with a history of progressive, severe hip pain ten years after a gun shot injury to his right …

Passive Fathometer Processing, Peter Gerstoft, William S. Hodgkiss, Martin Siderius, Chen-Fen Huang, Chris H. Harrison

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ocean acoustic noise can be processed efficiently to extract Green's function information between two receivers. By using noise array-processing techniques, it has been demonstrated that a passive array can be used as a fathometer [Siderius, et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 120, 1315-1323 (2006)]. Here, this approach is derived in both frequency and time domains and the output corresponds to the reflection sequence. From this reflection sequence, it is possible to extract seabed layering. In the ocean waveguide, most of the energy is horizontally propagating, whereas the bottom information is contained in the vertically propagating noise. Extracting the seabed information …

Deliberation And Dialogue In The Pracademic Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Dec 2007

Deliberation And Dialogue In The Pracademic Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

There is a strong connection between deliberation and dialogue and commons theory Deliberative activity generally takes place within group settings that approximate the defining conditions of a commons. In addition, social capital, in the form of trust and a sense of mutuality, and construction of a new or reconstituted normative outlook typically result from successful deliberation and dialogue efforts. This poses several lessons for the practice of the practice of such discussions.

Conversion Of Biomass Resource To Useful Forms Of Energy And Other Products, Latosha Johnson Dec 2007

Conversion Of Biomass Resource To Useful Forms Of Energy And Other Products, Latosha Johnson

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States is facing increasing pressure to find renewable energy sources due to rising energy costs. With world energy demand at an all time high, renewable energy has been thrust into the forefront of research as a means to mitigate this looming crisis. Throughout the United States, there is a large quantity of agricultural biomass that could be used to generate energy and lessen the dependence on diminishing resources. Specifically, animal feeding operations (AFOs) such as dairies generate large amounts of cow manure, which, when improperly handled, causes both air and water pollution. Currently, most manure is temporarily stockpiled …

Energy Efficient Removal Of Tds From Ro Reject And Cooling Tower Blowdown, Heath Himstedt, Meredith Bruick, Matthew Correnti, Seth Huber, Pettus Kincannon, Mai Sayarath

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The southwestern United States, specifically the Albuquerque, NM area, was chosen as the target location for implementation of the Project ZERO design due to the volume of electronics manufacturing facilities in the area and the critical need to conserve water. The WERC RO reject sample, believed to originate in chemical mechanical polishing, contains high amounts of silica, trace heavy metals, and salt compounds that would negatively impact water quality if it were discharged into surface waters. Because of the high levels of silica, special precaution must be taken when utilizing membrane or mechanical evaporation technologies due to fouling and scaling …

Validation Of Adaptive Aeroelastic Finite Element Program For Two Dimensional Flow Past A Suspension Bridge Girder Section Using Unstructured Grids., Shanique Murray Dec 2007

Validation Of Adaptive Aeroelastic Finite Element Program For Two Dimensional Flow Past A Suspension Bridge Girder Section Using Unstructured Grids., Shanique Murray

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The flow around suspension bridge decks was traditionally investigated using wind tunnel experiments. Computer modeling, an alternative to wind tunnel testing is now being used to simulate the wind flow around a bridge cross section. This alternative is less expensive and takes less time compared to wind tunnel experiments. The motion of flow around a bridge deck is described by a set of partial differential equations called Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. Flow features such as velocity, pressure and vorticity are predicted by solving these equations. These flow features are then used to compute flow parameters such as aerodynamic drag, lift and …

Championing "Tough Issues": How Women And Men Corporate Directors Contribute Differently To Board Deliberations, Nancy E. Mcinerney-Lacombe

Student Scholarship

A qualitative study of eleven male and eleven female directors was undertaken to investigate gender differences relating to championing tough issues at the board. This study demonstrated that men and women at the board share common mechanisms in the championing process. Correspondingly, they also evidenced notable differences. A championing model is presented to examine the gendered differences of the "tough issues" championing process. The model incorporates (1) the preconditions to championing, (2) the board environment that impacts the choice to champion (3) the influencing factors that impact the engagement process (4) the engagement style of the champions and (5) the …

Returning To Stay?: Young Adult Commitment In Chinese Protestant Churches In The United States, Cecilia C. Chan Dec 2007

Returning To Stay?: Young Adult Commitment In Chinese Protestant Churches In The United States, Cecilia C. Chan

Student Scholarship

Many Chinese Protestant churches in North America have noted a severe membership reduction due to the exiting of second generation Asian Americans, i.e. American-Raised Chinese (ARC) and American-Born Chinese (ABC). This research investigates why 22- to 35-year-old young adults return or do not return to Chinese churches after a hiatus usually caused by relocation to attend college. The purpose of the study is to examine motives of these young adults, to examine the nature and extent of their commitment and loyalty to the church and to consider how acculturation and cultural conflicts influence retention decisions. Our findings may allow church …

Sensemaking And Meaning-Arbitrage In Loosely-Coupled Healthcare Organizations, Sridhar Belavadi Seshadri Dec 2007

Sensemaking And Meaning-Arbitrage In Loosely-Coupled Healthcare Organizations, Sridhar Belavadi Seshadri

Student Scholarship

Academic Medical Centers (AMC), despite their research and educational prowess, are in a financial crisis. Increasing costs, stiffer competition, and anticipated tightening of budgets have created new levels of urgency among medical school deans and hospital CEOs to increase the efficiency of the clinical enterprise. This study models an AMC as a loosely coupled system and examines why interdisciplinary teams—comprising administrators, physicians, and nurses—struggle to successfully reengineer healthcare processes. Semi- structured interviews in an U.S. AMC were the basis for the development of a grounded theory framework. The findings suggest that: (a) the ambivalent culture of an AMC alternately supports …

A Nodular Submental Mass, Yeshwant B. Rawal, Carl M. Allen, John R. Kalmar

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

A 26-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of a mildly painful, slow growing, nodular mass of the submental region. Examination revealed a 1.5 x 1.0-cm midline swelling of the submental region. The skin over the mass appeared normal. The mass was firm and slightly tender on palpation and appeared to be positioned within the submental space. Intraoral examination did not reveal any obvious pathologic findings and the nearby teeth showed no caries, periodontal disease, or mobility. The patient’s medical history was unremarkable.

Letting Go Of Data In Aboriginal Australia: Ethnography On “Rubber Time", Sara Stevens Zur Dec 2007

Letting Go Of Data In Aboriginal Australia: Ethnography On “Rubber Time", Sara Stevens Zur

The Qualitative Report

While attempting to investigate modes of musical transmission among the Yol ŋ u People in Northeast Arnhem Land Australia, questions regarding the meaning of the word “research” led to the decisive abandonment of data collection. Specifically, the processes of observation, recording, and other typical Western means of genera ting data seemed to be in direct opposition to the way knowledge was traditionally shared. The author critically examines her multiple attempts at conducting this research, and discusses why eventually giving up on the research led to a more profound understanding.

“I Just See All Children As Children”: Teachers’ Perceptions About Inclusion, Jane M. Leatherman Dec 2007

“I Just See All Children As Children”: Teachers’ Perceptions About Inclusion, Jane M. Leatherman

The Qualitative Report

This narrative study examined teachers’ perceptions of their inclusive classrooms. Eight early childhood teachers responded to open-ended interview questions about their experiences teaching children with and without disabilities in the same classroom environment. The social constructivist view of teaching and learning is highlighted as the teachers construct their knowledge of inclusion and how it meets the needs of children with disabilities in the inclusive environment. The following themes emerged from interview analysis: the inclusive classroom is a great place for children, the teacher needs additional education, the teacher needs support from administrators and to be included in decisions about the …

Entre La Ra Ź On Y La Pasión: La Intimidad Sexual En Parejas Heterosexuales Ante La Empresa Preventiva Del Vih/Sida, Domingo J. Marqués Reyes, Sheilla Rodríguez Madera, Leida Matías Carrelo

The Qualitative Report

This article establishes heterosexual relationships as spaces out of control and, from Foucault’s view of power, positions them as answer to the discourses generated by society to control sexuality. This qualitative study included 20 Puerto Rican couples (11 seroconcordant and 9 serodiscordant) with the objective of identifying variables related to relationship satisfaction with sexual intimacy among women living with HIV/AIDS. Results evidence how in many instances sexual relations are, in fact, moments where passion precedes reason. By involving in high risk behavior, they ignore the preventive enterprise, distance themselves from reason and imposing passion. We come to conclusions about social …

Gustav Shpet's Literary And Theatre Theory, Galin Tihanov Dec 2007

Gustav Shpet's Literary And Theatre Theory, Galin Tihanov

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper, "Gustav Shpet's Literary and Theatre Theory," Galin Tihanov introduces Shpet's theoretical work on literature and theatre, until recently little studied. Neither has been sufficient attention paid to Shpet's overall presence on the Russian cultural scene in the 1910s-1930s. As a result, our knowledge and appreciation of the scope of his writings and the variety of Russian literary and theatre life in the first third of the twentieth century have remained less rich and well-informed than they could otherwise have been. Tihanov explains that Shpet's participation in contemporary literature and theatre assumed different forms: he wrote both from …
