Fundulus As The Premier Teleost Model In Environmental Biology: Opportunities For New Insights Using Genomics, Bernard Rees Dec 2007

Fundulus As The Premier Teleost Model In Environmental Biology: Opportunities For New Insights Using Genomics, Bernard Rees

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A strong foundation of basic and applied research documents that the estuarine fish Fundulus heteroclitus and related species are unique laboratory and field models for understanding how individuals and populations interact with their environment. In this paper we summarize an extensive body of work examining the adaptive responses of Fundulus species to environmental conditions, and describe how this research has contributed importantly to our understanding of physiology, gene regulation, toxicology, and ecological and evolutionary genetics of teleosts and other vertebrates. These explorations have reached a critical juncture at which advancement is hindered by the lack of genomic resources for these …

Privacy In Location Aware Computing Environments, Denise Anthony, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz Dec 2007

Privacy In Location Aware Computing Environments, Denise Anthony, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

As location-aware and pervasive computing technologies become more prevalent, privacy concerns are becoming increasingly more important. User preferences about location privacy may depend on place, not only in terms of their physical location but also in terms of their social context: how they define where they are, what they are doing, and whom they are with at the time. Using the experience sampling method, the authors explored the privacy preferences of 25 users during one week. They found that participants were more willing to share location information when at home or alone than when at other locations or with friends. …

Extensive Simple Sequence Repeat Genotyping Of Potato Landraces Supports A Major Reevaluation Of Their Gene Pool Structure And Classification, David M. Spooner, Jorge Nunez, Guillermo Trujillo, Maria Del Rosario Herrera, Frank Guzman, Marc Ghislain Dec 2007

Extensive Simple Sequence Repeat Genotyping Of Potato Landraces Supports A Major Reevaluation Of Their Gene Pool Structure And Classification, David M. Spooner, Jorge Nunez, Guillermo Trujillo, Maria Del Rosario Herrera, Frank Guzman, Marc Ghislain

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Contrasting taxonomic treatments of potato landraces have continued over the last century, with the recognition of anywhere from 1 to 21 distinct Linnean species, or of Cultivar Groups within the single species Solanum tuberosum. We provide one of the largest molecular marker studies of any crop landraces to date, to include an extensive study of 742 landraces of all cultivated species (or Cultivar Groups) and 8 closely related wild species progenitors, with 50 nuclear simple sequence repeat (SSR) (also known as microsatellite) primer pairs and a plastid DNA deletion marker that distinguishes most lowland Chilean from upland Andean landraces. …

Investigating Hydrophilic Channels In Polymer Composites Using Atomic Force Microscopy., Matthew David Cummins Dec 2007

Investigating Hydrophilic Channels In Polymer Composites Using Atomic Force Microscopy., Matthew David Cummins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanoscience is not about products becoming smaller and smaller, but about new material properties being exploited for new and enhanced product applications. Liquid crystalline materials are one branch of "nanomaterials" that has promise of highly useful products. Liquid crystalline materials are soft materials that can respond to external stimuli and form ordered structures. Liquid crystals have applications as templates for more complex nanostructures as well as sensing devices. The purpose of this study was to investigate, using atomic force microscopy, the characteristics of a liquid crystalline, nanoparticle, composite material to determine whether or not it was indeed forming ordered, hydrophilic …

Design Of An Active Orthotic Device For Joint Management., Steven Clayton Anderson Dec 2007

Design Of An Active Orthotic Device For Joint Management., Steven Clayton Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Existing treatment programs and procedures are incapable of addressing the complications encountered with patients who experience spasticity and hypertonia related joint contractures. Current passive therapy procedures and devices are only capable of managing the extent of joint contractures on patients with chronic and acute onset severe neurological disorders. The project was conceived as a means to develop an active device that is capable of adapting to the state of the joint to mange the extent of contractures and to permit consideration for the prevalence of spastic activity episodes and hypertonia. The project focused on the design of the physical prototype …

Application Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Saving Behaviors Of College Students, Benjamin Franklin Cummings Dec 2007

Application Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change To Saving Behaviors Of College Students, Benjamin Franklin Cummings

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) of change (Prochaska & Di Clemente, 1982) as a guide to analyze financial behavior, college students were asked a variety of questions about their financial situations. Recruited from undergraduate classes at Utah State University, 112 students took the online survey. Surprisingly, 44.4% of participants reported being in the Maintenance stage of the TTM, and 71.2% reported contributing at least monthly to some sort of savings or investment account. In terms of Financial Planning Personality Type (Lown, 2007), 46.3% of respondents were Planners and 23.1% were Savers. Though the study displays limitations, it begs further investigation …

A Novel Inhibitory Mechanism Of Mitochondrion-Dependent Apoptosis By A Herpesviral Protein, Pinghui Feng, Chengyu Liang, Young C. Shin, Xiaofei E, Weijun Zhang, Robyn Gravel, Ting-Ting Wu, Ren Sun, Edward Usherwood, Jae U. Jung Dec 2007

A Novel Inhibitory Mechanism Of Mitochondrion-Dependent Apoptosis By A Herpesviral Protein, Pinghui Feng, Chengyu Liang, Young C. Shin, Xiaofei E, Weijun Zhang, Robyn Gravel, Ting-Ting Wu, Ren Sun, Edward Usherwood, Jae U. Jung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Upon viral infection, cells undergo apoptosis as a defense against viral replication. Viruses, in turn, have evolved elaborate mechanisms to subvert apoptotic processes. Here, we report that a novel viral mitochondrial anti-apoptotic protein (vMAP) of murine gamma-herpesvirus 68 (gammaHV-68) interacts with Bcl-2 and voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) in a genetically separable manner. The N-terminal region of vMAP interacted with Bcl-2, and this interaction markedly increased not only Bcl-2 recruitment to mitochondria but also its avidity for BH3-only pro-apoptotic proteins, thereby suppressing Bax mitochondrial translocation and activation. In addition, the central and C-terminal hydrophobic regions of vMAP interacted with VDAC1. …

Literary And Cinematic Responses To The Crime Story In Contemporary France, Deborah Streifford Reisinger Dec 2007

Literary And Cinematic Responses To The Crime Story In Contemporary France, Deborah Streifford Reisinger

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Literary and Cinematic Responses to the Crime Story in Contemporary France," Deborah Streifford Reisinger examines society's relationship to violence in an era of increased media dominance. Reisinger's interdisciplinary approach integrates media, cinema, and literary studies to analyze how the crime story functions as a site of discursive struggle. Reisinger focuses on the sensational Paulin and Succo affairs that became mobile signifiers about crime, insecurity and the Other in France in the 1980s. By situating these crime stories in a larger historical and political context, she analyzes how media and politicians use the crime story as a tool …

A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of German And American Graduate Business Students, Stefanie Borst Dec 2007

A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of German And American Graduate Business Students, Stefanie Borst

Global Business Languages

This paper reports on results of a comparative assessment of MBA students at highly ranked business schools in Germany and the USA. The results from a demographic and attitude questionnaire, and the results from a reading and writing assessment are discussed, and areas of significant variation between the German and American students are highlighted. Striking differences were found in several areas, even though the German and American students were similar with respect to educational level and professional goals. Since international MBAs like these students will ultimately work with each other in the global business community, I propose that understanding these …
