Valuing Language And Culture: An Example From Sasak, Mahyuni Mahyuni

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

No one disputes that possession of language is one of the most distinctive of all human cultural attributes. The most fundamental argument has to do with the nature of language as social practice. An attempt to divorce language from its cultural context is to ignore the social circumstances which give it resonance and meaning. In the case of Sasak, language use reinforces the existing status differential and social value of language associated with the group. This perspective is employed, in this paper, to tackle the issue of Sasak language and culture.

Charting The New Territory Of Adaptive Co-Management: A Delphi Study, Ryan Plummer, Derek Armitage

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Complex systems understanding implies a world characterized by dynamic, nonlinear interactions, discontinuities, and surprises. Such conditions are not amenable to conventional resource management approaches that stress command-and-control, and therefore, novel governance approaches are more suited to complexity and uncertainty are required. Adaptive co-management has emerged as an interdisciplinary response to this need, and blends the adaptive management and collaborative management narratives. However, concepts associated with adaptive co-management are relatively new and quickly expanding from multiple perspectives. The objective of this paper is to take stock of this relatively recent concept and synthesize current thinking in terms of: (1) the core …

Peripheral blood cells were detected by globuli meter, CD34+ cells in bone marrow were detected by flow cytometry, and the protein expression of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) was detected by immunocytochemistry. RESULTS: The numbers of …

Metastatic Synovial Sarcoma To The Left Atrium. A Management Dilemma, Atif W. Qubbany, Abdulhalim J. Kinsara

Saudi Medical Journal

We present a rare case of synovial sarcoma with minimal symptoms that metastasized and threatened to embolize the heart in a 26-year-old male admitted to our hospital for evaluation of low back pain. The tumor made a direct extension to the left atrium and moved freely in the left ventricle outflow tract. We discuss the potential therapeutic modalities in this difficult scenario.

Ground Heat Exchangers: Analytical And Numerical Modeling And Experimental Validation, Gopal K. Bandyopadhyay Dec 2007

Ground Heat Exchangers: Analytical And Numerical Modeling And Experimental Validation, Gopal K. Bandyopadhyay

Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge of the thermal response characteristics of the ground heat exchanger (GHX) in the early stage of a step heat input is essential for the design or simulation of ground source heat pump systems (GSHP). Recently this has assumed even a greater importance as the building cooling loads dominate in many regions due to the general warming trend and there is an urgent need for developing hybrid systems. In an operating GSHP system, the heat flux across the borehole boundary builds up gradually as the rise of the fluid temperature is dampened by the thermal mass of the aggregate fluid. …

Discovery: An Incremental Revolution, Rebecca Minnillo Dec 2007

Discovery: An Incremental Revolution, Rebecca Minnillo

Student Scholarship

Theorists such as Simon (1973), Popper (1959) and Kuhn (1962) have commented on the tendency to view scientific discovery as a "revolution" with a focus on an end result. In history, we "date" scientific discoveries as if they were events instead of the final outcome of a lengthy experimentation process. But, as Kuhn (1962:7) observed nearly a half-century ago, scientific revolution is, in fact, a "process rarely completed by a single man and never overnight". Rather, discovery most often occurs as a result of collaboration and interaction between researchers over protracted periods of time. Surprisingly, there is a paucity of …

Sales Opportunity Crafting: Explaining How Salespeople Craft Value Propositions In Business-To-Business Selling, Ganesh Kumar Dec 2007

Sales Opportunity Crafting: Explaining How Salespeople Craft Value Propositions In Business-To-Business Selling, Ganesh Kumar

Student Scholarship

This paper examines the spontaneous, situational, adaptive capabilities in successful business-to-business salespeople. Salespeople craft appropriate sales value propositions that resonate with buyers to achieve a sale. Findings indicate sales value propositions occur in four distinct patterns, as a combination of a salespeople’s choice in emphasizing the value of their relationship and/or the solution itself. This paper combines contingency selling approaches with job crafting to suggest a new construct—“sales opportunity crafting (SOC)”—to explain how salespeople frame a sales opportunity and then decide on a sales value positioning response. The suggested model highlights the role of antecedents— such as influence over customers’ …
